My mother was a quadroon. It’s not a term that is used much nowadays, but it refers to a person, and usually, a woman, who is only one quarter negro.

Chapter 9

Wendy and I were playing another couple of models in a game of beach volleyball. With our height we were the current champions but this game was getting too close for comfort.

I woke up with a deep gasp clawing at the air around me. Successive heavy inhales of the cold, damp air caused me to let out wild coughs.
I was disoriented but my back, the base of my skull and forehead all hurt too badly to ignore.
I recoiled from the pain and all my sensations coming back all at once. My hearing followed suit and I recognized the sound of heavy rainfall.

"Where am I?" I thought to myself trying to ignore the pain. "I feel terrible".

Chapter 3.6

I rejoined John in observing Sylvia. Our people were being forced downstairs, and we were helpless to stop it. We watched as they came were herded to the palace, and then the throne room. I gasped as the shimmering air coalesced into a man.

"Here they are, my Lord, " he told Amos, who was sitting, once again on his throne.

Doug North and his wife, Carol, were truckers. For many years, Doug had pulled flatbed all over the country, while Carol stayed home with the kids. Now that the kids were out of the house, Carol traveled with Doug.

On this particular day, they were in a backwater town, somewhere in the middle of northern Idaho, having just loaded up some treated fence posts. Doug was throwing a strap over the load when out on the two-lane highway, a car blew a tire.

Chapter 3.5

It had been three weeks since Rashda had gone downstairs to see what happened to Belinda. He had never confirmed what I thought occurred to her, but his statement referencing The Godfather made it seem likely.

I had spoken to John about it, and he agreed with me. We had watched the movie a few times, but now I felt like removing it from the ship’s archives. I didn’t think I could ever watch it again.

While Marcy was doing her best to reapply the many makeup products Stephanie had shown her to use, Stephanie was making quick work out of repairing her own makeup. It was very clear that she was very practiced at it since she only needed a few minutes to reapply the complex look. The rest of it was spent sternly supervising Marcy’s job.

Chapter 5

I put the rest of my stuff in the small bag that Julia had brought in and was taken down to reception to be signed out. I really did not know what my future held now.

He gave me a small squeeze. “You’re going to be killer when you get the training wheels off..."

Chapter 4

I was in a dream, I knew it was a dream as I was floating but my body was on fire. I felt no pain, just every nerve ending was screaming. There were also sounds of speaking in my head, strange words that my dreaming brain made no sense of.

Paula and I were quickly separated again. I was taken into an outbuilding behind the palace. I have no idea where they took Paula or if I would ever see her again.

The parents of a troublesome teenage son finally had enough and sends him for special training. He gets more than she bargains for.

“He was obviously checking me out. I didn’t smile because if I had, I was sure to start giggling.”
