Jack, Nick, and Cheshire along with their pets have made their way to the temple. All of them were exhausted and had numerous cuts, bruises, and small wounds covering their bodies. Even Sher Khan and Chaos had blood coming from wounds covering their bodies.

Two days later, and I was in the office early, Kul as insufferable as ever.

We stepped into our new home, and I was immediately enveloped by the serene beauty that surrounded us. She wasn’t a clone of Carolyn, her hips being a little broader, and her legs not as lean, but in many ways it was a rerun of that pool table moment. Bugger. I sorted my goggles and headed straight for the water.

It wasn’t anywhere near bath temperature, but it was welcoming enough. I pulled down my goggles, and started an appropriate Australian crawl away from the beach. It felt like the best hangover cure imaginable.

Parking in the village was never an issue. The drive took place in stony silence with Dad’s grim expression inviting no conversation. There was something I needed to say before we went much further though.

“This isn’t going to do any good, Dad.” He glowered at me, but I pressed on regardless. “He was as surprised and upset as I was by the changes in my appearance – more so. He’s not going to have any idea how to reverse this. Besides, even if he does, I’m not going through with it.”

South Pacific Island:
Screams fill the night air as Jack, Nick, and Cheshire push to get to the center of the island. Chaos, Sher Khan, and Samson attack the guards posted at the enemy’s campsite. As for Jack, Nick, and Cheshire, they were moving swiftly and quietly. They weren’t giving the people in the camp a chance to react.

It was early afternoon when I returned to the office. Debbie greeted me with a smile.

“She’s gone then?”

“Sorry,” he apologized. “I didn’t mean to say that… out loud. I mean….”

Chapter 6

The fact that we considered the story future fact set him back.

“You’re telling me that there are islands out there which will disappear in our lifetime?”

“We are. There are research papers that lay it out, clear as day, should you bother to read them. It’s just that we have been in a place where reading them was our job. It will continue to be our job for a while longer, so the next story will have similar reality. We have a play, opening in Amsterdam, in a few weeks, that covers a typical problem of the rise in water levels.”

Chapter 5

Ellie called her family first, to let them know that we would pop in when we were in Norfolk. There was a signing session at a bookstore in Norwich, after which we had a day off. It was her mother that brought up the problem with it being written by two women, which allowed Ellie to tell her that she would send a picture of the new me to her phone. She did this when she had finished the call.

The shuttle train was approaching Faen Shanta, and as we drew closer, my eyes widened in awe. This was the first time I had seen something like it. The tree was gigantic—far larger than I had ever imagined, even bigger than the history books made it seem. Its massive trunk seemed to stretch endlessly into the sky, its ancient roots weaving through the land like the veins of the world itself. The tree's sheer size and majesty filled me with a sense of wonder and insignificance, immersing me in the enchantment of this magical world.

Of course, our extended trip couldn’t escape the media. One of the French President’s planes, carrying the EU Commission President and a team of diplomats was unlikely to fly under the radar. There were crowds at many of the airports when we landed, especially once we cleared the Indian Ocean.
