Rebecca looks at the SUV that belonged to her sister’s company as it is towed in. It looked like someone had used it to play demolishing derby.

“Are your sister’s employees always this rough on their vehicles?” Lisa was standing next to Rebecca when they spotted a rival tow truck company approaching them with one of K&P services SUVs.

“Give it time. This is all coming at you so fast. And you’re still sick, and you’re dealing with Iain. If there’s something there, let it grow at its own pace, and don’t tie yourself in knots if everything isn’t wrapped up in a bow by lunchtime. Okay?”

“Okay,” I said. “What would I do without you?”

She laughed and said, “that’s easy. You would think too much and you would worry yourself silly. You’re in lockdown with a good looking guy who wants to kiss you. Just enjoy it!”

CHAPTER 40
We finally arrived in what was clearly the Deep South, at least of France, and I must have muttered something along those lines as Nansi Edwards immediately corrected me. She did it nicely, she did it with a smile, but it was clearly a very polite slap down.

“Politics, Enfys, and religion. You don’t need to know the details, but this was a different country back then. Paris-based France it wasn’t; different language, different culture. Once they had an excuse to come down from the North, well, lots of castle building, lots of land and property to be redistributed. Local language made illegal. Sound familiar?”

“Cami. Each of us is going to need to do what we can when we have the strength to do it. I was useless earlier and you wore yourself out. So it was my turn. Now sit here a minute.” He got up, invaded my ear with the thermometer, and said “100.7. Okay, Cami. Time for Tylenol, then go lie down.”

I took the pills, smiled and said, “Aye, aye, Cap’n.”

He chuckled and said, “wrong service branch, Cadet. Fifty demerits!” I went to go lie down.

She shook her head and grinned at me. “Do you get hate mail?” she asked looking serious.

The Judge was good on his promise to take me not only out of the city but right out of the state. Our journey was hardly discrete due to a three Police cruiser escort complete with lights and sirens out of the city. Then the county cops took over and four of them followed us right to the Washington State line. A local TV truck complete with a huge satellite dish joined in the convoy but according to the local radio, I was being run out of town because I was a threat to society. Not true but small-town politics are messy at the best of times. Thankfully, the state line was just over an hour away but it was clear in that the message they were sending me was very clear… ‘Do not come back or else!’
