The Accidental Soprano
A Short Story
By Maryanne Peters
They said that I was fortunate that the injury did not cause lasting damage, but that was before it changed my life. I am not bitter towards the surgeons that repaired my neck. I have used surgeons since, and I am grateful to them. Surgeons have to do what they do to let us live, or to normal lives.
In this chapter, Emily navigates a week filled with challenges, moments of quiet reflection, and glimpses of connection. As she begins to find her footing in the small routines and relationships that shape her days, an unexpected turn of events forces her to confront emotions she had been holding at bay. Through it all, the steadfast support of those around her offers a glimmer of hope amidst the storm.
Lanie Saunders wants nothing more than to go to The Eras Tour, the person who is supposed to accompany her, her big brother, who is home from grad school for the summer, doesn't want to go. Alex is worried someone from high school will recognize him, and to him, there's nothing more embarrassing than being seen at a Taylor Swift concert. But Lanie has an idea: what if she casts a spell that will disguise Alex? Alex thinks the idea is silly, because magic isn't real, but he's about to get an up close and personal lesson at just how real it is -- and how magical a night at a Taylor Swift concert can be.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
When I posted my first long TG story on here, I did not think it would be eight years before I posted another one. But here I finally am, with a story I started writing about a year ago, then tinkered with a lot over the past year. Unlike my last big story, this one focuses a lot more on the person who triggers the transformation, rather than the person who gets transformed. It also involves identity death for the person who gets transformed, so if that's not your thing, feel free to skip this one. And for those who've read "My Shallow Regret," you'll notice this story uses names that are very close to that one -- there's no connection between the characters, I just like using the names.
Also, shoutout to anyone who can use the small clues I tucked into the story to figure out where the main characters live.
Keir was in the middle of studying a strix, drawing out the incredibly complex weave of magic that gave it shape. It was not an easy process, especially when combined with the irritation and low level pain coming from his body. The clothes he was wearing weren't helping matters either. With his current monthly visitor, a dress was simply easier to wear for hygiene reasons.
Desdemonia and the rest of the council filed into their respective places around the dais where I sat, holding my tentacular head.
“Seth!” April yelled up at me in Desdemonia’s voice. “I’m so sorry! I had no idea!”
“We need to reverse this!” I said, and everyone held their ears. My voice was rather high-pitched and strident.
“Even if we could, it would just find another way into this reality!” Desdemonia said in April’s voice. “This way, we can at least terminate it upon entry into this realm.”
Eighteen-year-old Nicholas Hammerstein is at the cusp of finishing high school in his hometown of Los Alamos, NM. He has a seemingly ideal life and is blessed with loving parents, a cute baby sister, and great friends. Nicholas is a gifted student and martial artist who has dreams of leaving for college at the end of his senior year. But, living in a world of Emergent humans, he will soon find his life turned upside down as his life and the fate of a kingdom hang in the balance. His future and theirs will be determined by how he navigates the drastic changes in his body and the magical and superpowered Mergent population he joins.
“And now,” April flourished Desdemonia’s hands, “Comes the moment we’ve all been waiting for.” She beckoned to me.
I took a deep breath. This was it.
If I took that step forward, I could be leaving humanity behind forever, doomed to an eternity, or perhaps, many eternities as another being entirely. Something so completely alien, even aliens from another galaxy would be more familiar. In exchange for what?
I saw the scowling faces of my parents. I was happy they were there. Hopefully, they would make sure there was no funny business.
Drying off after the hot tub, I leaned over and quietly asked Ella, “What exactly is a manicure and pedicure?”
“You really are a boy,” she whispered, her smile taking any potential sting out of her words. “They're going to clean, massage, and colour our hands, feet, and nails. It feels really nice, just relax and go with it.”
We broke up and Sally led me through to our station. It wasn’t one of the biggest rooms, but it was packed with furnishings and paintings. She gave me a quick run-down on the furniture and ceramics before the public arrived.
Wow! There's a newly discovered version of that beloved classic that manages to capture the magic of the original while re-imagining it for today's generation. Here's a few excerpted lyrics to peruse...
“God, what day is it?” Cassady sits up rubbing her eyes trying to wake up.
“I think it's Friday.” Jessie turns around to face her cousin.
They had gotten in late from the rodeo they had played at. Instead of staying on their tour bus, Cynthia sprung for a nice hotel room for the group. They were worn out from playing two gigs back-to-back and doing a rodeo several days later.
It wasn’t just the infernals that sent a contingent. It appeared the entire town sent entities to the Council chambers.
I stood with April as people gathered around the immense crystal. Everyone spoke in excited hushed tones and several had winked at me, or touched me on the arm, or leaned in to give me a kind whisper.
(Author's Note: I apologize profusely for taking so long to post the latest chapter of this story. Real life has been quite bothersome lately and the energy to write ebbed to a standstill on certain days. However, I can see light at the end of the tunnel and hope to resume posting on a regular schedule. Thank you for continuing to read and I hope you comment as well.)
Danny Collins was the new student to Westwood High, a school in the middle of Suburban Illinois. He was a wildcard at his past school always getting good grades and sometimes even girls but his long hair and skater boy appearance often was a turn off for some, now entering into Westwood smack dab during his Freshman year he had to make some friends.
“I’m still not sure how I did it,” I said to Erica as she continued stocking the shelves of her shop with the strange curiosities she sold, in this case some leather-bound books.
“And I’m not completely convinced you did it at all,” Erica said without even bothering to stop what she was doing to look at me.

Runaway lovers Scott and Mollie make the best of the bohemian lifestyle.
Traveling New Terra in their small electric van and relying on freelance gigs for income.
With money tight, they often have to shop at second-hand stores.
There, treasures can be found. Some are even magical.
As our lovers find one of such garments, unexpected opportunities unfold for them.
I knew one day I would be seen or caught. I couldn't help it. The urge was just too strong. All crossdressers suffer the same feelings. Guilt and shame. I was a man. Why was I lessening myself wanting to dress and appear as a woman? I had tried to stop before. I had gathered up all my clothes, shoes, wigs, and makeup. I filled three bin bags and threw them in the a skip.
The continuing adventures of Doug Gordon, Queen of Ka'an. (Ka'an in Mayan means Heaven.) Ka'an is actually an alien world populated by women... and a man-eating plant. Well, it is actually male-eating plants that spit out females. Doug and his wives fixed everything, but now Doug must remake a planet... and it seems Ka'an will be remade in his image!
Angelique is coming into her own, which involves lascivious dwarves, an amorous angel, and a hellhound or two. Things get complicated but it's not her fault, she's sexy, hot as hell, and inclined to violence as the solution to certain problems. Maybe it comes from being half-succubus and half-hellmaid?
