The work was called “Femme Allongée” or in English “Reclining Woman”, and it was by the lesser known impressionist Claude Mesurier. He was perhaps less than famous because he was less of an impressionist than others, and later in time by a decade or so. Some aspects of the painting were more realism than impressionism, and yet there was a mystery in the face of the woman, looking out at the artist, or the admirer of the work.

Eighteen-year-old Nicholas Hammerstein is at the cusp of finishing high school in his hometown of Los Alamos, NM. He has a seemingly ideal life and is blessed with loving parents, a cute baby sister, and great friends. Nicholas is a gifted student and martial artist who has dreams of leaving for college at the end of his senior year. But, living in a world of Emergent humans, he will soon find his life turned upside down as his life and the fate of a kingdom hang in the balance. His future and theirs will be determined by how he navigates the drastic changes in his body and the magical and superpowered Mergent population he joins.

“Wait.” I held up my hand. “How is that possible?”

“A Were who can use magic,” April said. “When you opened your third Eye, I knew.”

I sat down, hard. “Well, I’m not going to open anything up.”

“You’re already entangled, boy.” Elder Langmore said. “The quicker you can copulate with this trollop, the quicker the entanglement can be extracted!”

“Don’t be crass, Ernie,” Desdemonia said. “It’s unbecoming.”

“You didn’t think I was so unbecoming when I was copulating with you back in the day, Missy.”

“So droll,” Desdemonia said.

“It’s called The Who.” Elder Langmore sat in the pergola in High Valley Recreational Facility which was adjacent to High Valley High School’s Baseball Fields. They were dual purpose with the high school using the fields and having priority, but also used for little league during the off season. The pergola was in a small park-like area south from the ballfield, nestled in a small wooded area that featured a pond and walking path.

A Short Story

It seemed as if all that Jack needed to do was to get drunk. They had been seeing each other for almost a month. He had been determined that this was a relationship that would work. Perhaps he just tried too hard. That was how she let him down – hard. It hurt more than he could ever have imagined.

I made my way to PE, and went into the locker room.

“What’s the matter, Seth?” Coach Nichols said. “You look a little pale.”

“Uh, nothing Coach,” I said, making my way to my locker. “A little tired today.”

“Yeah, I can see that.” Coach nodded at my hair which I still hadn’t cut. “Tangling with a witch, I take it?”

I rolled my eyes and shrugged. “You know me, Coach.”

“First and Third situations today at practice. Need your head in the game, son.”

Chapter 7

“Firstly,” I said. “I think that one of the new members in the drama class has been telling his boss about the flow of information. They probably used to get snippets from Vlad, without knowing exactly where he got them from. We can use that to lure the unit to somewhere that is away from oversight, where we can just eliminate them. I saw that the Arrivals Board had a flight that had landed from Belarus. It was Aeroflot, so those duffle bags they were carrying could have been heavy weaponry, they looked bulky enough.”

For a brief moment, I felt at peace for the first time all day. We sat there, waiting for the bell to ring, holding hands.

“You know, I never wanted any of this to happen,” she said, breaking the spell.

“And you know that Mitzy and I are just friends. I don’t know why you freaked out that day.”

She pulled her hand away. “I know, Seth. But what I’m becoming, who I’m becoming…you wouldn’t like. It was necessary to extricate myself from our relationship.”

“You mean the gothic lolita bitch witch?”

She chuckled at that. “I take it you don’t like the look.”

“Isn’t it beautiful?”

Ben looked all around him as his body rose upward. There wasn’t any voice he could hear that told him that. He only had the knowledge that something, somewhere said there was beauty, and that he should appreciate it.

“So, so beautiful.”

Ben’s eyes narrowed as he took in his surroundings. He could see nothing but the sky and the clouds. The only thing he felt was the wind that occasionally blew past. His body was entirely suspended in the air, and every second he could feel himself slowly ascend toward something.

“Look.”

My class after lunch was Advanced Placement English, with Mr. Vaidya. Vaidya was a quiet, mousy kind of guy who spoke in a thin voice and had an East Indian accent. One of the things we found unintentionally hilarious was when he recited poetry, and today was no exception.

“Today, class, ve vill be studying Dylan Thomas, a Velsh Poet who came to US on four occasions. He is vone of the most important Velsh poets of the 20th Century.”

Miss Adventure

Part 1

It is not unheard of. A fan becomes so obsessed with a celebrity that they try to become just like that person. These “super-fans” have also become known as “stans” after the Eminem rap song. They try to take on the appearance of their idol and may even try to make contact with the object of their obsession or get close to them in some way. In some cases it is all consuming.

In a stunning turn of events, it was discovered that China had captured numerous wizards from the streets and detained them in secretive camps. These powerful individuals, once masters of their destinies, were now imprisoned and stripped of their freedom. The revelation sent shockwaves through the magical community, as the authoritarian regime aimed to gain control over the world of sorcery.

"I get the picture: The processing center looks at my old world and my new world and asks each one if they want me."

"That's a good way to put it. Then, if you're a no-go in both directions, they give you their whole-new-life bit. It's a package deal: a new name, a Greyhound bus ticket, and the offer of a shitty job that you'd never take. They walk you to the door, tell you the world is your oyster, and give you a great big swat on the butt, 'cause it's your birthday."

CHAPTER 57
The place we were based at was indeed a clone of the Brenin, with extras in some ways, and surprising omissions in others. The dorms were larger, and we ended up all in one ’gender-neutral’ bunkhouse affair, which demanded a certain finesse in dressing and undressing. Looking at the rows of bunks, I remembered all those jokes about ‘The Promise’ and blessed my Dad’s insistence that I travelled with a little box of reusable foam earplugs.
