Mantra (Malibu Comics) is questioned by a powerful superior in the Aladdin agency, a black ops group which has become a danger both to ultras in general and to the nation as a whole. Aladdin has discovered that Eden Blake has suspicious past links with Lauren Sherwood, the deceased new Mantra. If the interrogator can use this information as a wedge to uncover Eden's secret life, that life will change drastically for the worse.

Marcia woke up and was disoriented by the unfamiliarity of the room for a moment, then remembered the day before. In two more days, it would be her seventeenth birthday, and she was very much looking forward to it. She and Darryl were planning to spend time heading into Anchorage and exploring before her birthday dinner. Her parents were heading down from Fairbanks, and would be arriving later in the day.

Kaylie and Patricia continue to prove themselves compared to the other girls at the science intensive. A backyard party leads to resorting of romantic relationships. A clever subroutine by Kaylie may have consequences.

Scared and alone, Christina huddled in the dark of her best friend's bottom drawer, unsure how long she would have to wait there. Praying silently, she tried not to cry.

Charlie and his crew escape the unknown danger that lurks in Darwin.

“They're not going to let you play football!" he exclaimed.

Chapter 9

Charlie begins to find an 'in' to start to solve the conspiracy investigations. One of his prisoners might be amenable.

After Susan had left we discussed what we were going to do. I think Talia was conflicted because she had emotionally committed to having Kalie cloned and all that might entail. That meant, if I was unable to cope, that dream would be gone. I thought she was brave to agree in the first place. In a private session with Susan, Susan suggested that it was a bigger deal than I had even imagined. Talia would have to give up or admit that the Kalie lying in the hospital bed was never coming home.

Stirring slightly, Christina was in the wonderful middle ground between dreaming and waking, still not fully conscious, but no longer asleep. God, that was a beautiful dream! she mused sleepily. It all felt so real!

Maria woke and stretched as she looked through the canopy to see an endless sea of green beneath. The rest of her family awoke slowly, sleepy mutterings from the younger children and an instant question from Alejandra.

“Where are we?”

Quinn chuckled. “We’re near a place in Brazil called Madre de Dios, a bit south and west of Rio Branco so basically its in the middle of nowhere which is exactly where we need to be. We’ll be landing shortly so you’ll want to make sure everyone’s harness is tight.”

Maxine escaped the hustle and bustle of the conference centre before anyone else could congratulate her on the rambling speech that she’d just given. She felt exhausted from the ordeal and was just glad that it was all over.

Looking around her room, Christina smiled. Well, it's as clean as I can get it, anyway! Wiping her hands together, she turned to leave the decidedly boyish bedroom, catching sight of herself in the mirror that was the door to her closet.

Marcia looked at the scenery around her brother’s truck as he turned into the driveway of the farm house. Directly to the south of the farm was the Matanuska River, a river they had followed almost since they passed the glacier that fed it, seventy or so miles to the northeast.

She could see a mountain beyond it, the river that seemed to be all by itself. Looking at the map she had been tracking their progress on, it said the mountain was called Pioneer Peak. Like the river, it was rather majestic, standing almost all alone.
