I woke up yet again with the dead weight of an arm across me, and dribble down my neck, which, of course, is why I decided I needed the tissues.

CHAPTER 13
I make my crackling the old-fashioned way. Ish. After scoring and soaking the skin, I pat it dry and then rub it with olive oil. Sea salt is then rubbed into it, and the oven turned up high for the last twenty minutes of cooking. The result is a lovely brown crispness that rises clear away from the meat and just screams “Eat me!”

CHAPTER 8
I laughed happily as Elder placed Younger back in his chair. “You have just made my life easier, you know, I can call you ‘Dad’ now so tiny brain here doesn’t get confused!”

CHAPTER 6
Howard looked around the three of us as Abigail sat tight-lipped and furious.

CHAPTER 12
I had left Arris with some instructions and a spare key, and true to her nature she rang me at about one thirty to say all was ready.

Pete was a little nervous, in the end, as we collected a large part of his possessions to take to my mother’s place.

This episode is offered up to see if there is a desire for a continuation of the story of Laura and Pete. Odd John is leaving the building, and unlike the first 'book' this is not a mystery story. The first part came to a natural end; this can be read as a separate story.

He looked good, in the way that some men manage to do even as age chews at their edges.

I thought it was about time to sort things out. The weekend with Tony had opened my eyes to the way life could be, and Joe was not someone I could ever trust to take me there.

That was not the start of a new life, by any means, but it was definitely the end of the old one.

Winter mornings could be fun, and pretty, but the A2 was often a nightmare. The Kwak was buzzing away as I finally got past the Whitfield roundabout and I could let it have its head. It’s a long, long straight past Lydden, and just as I was topping the ton I picked up the change in the lights at Husk. Bugger.

This is the conclusion to this part of the story, There is some nastiness here, but not as bad as has been shown so far.

CHAPTER 17
The next couple of days were very odd, for me, as I Johnned my way to work and Lauraed round the house in the evening. Pete was driving me each day, and I had to concentrate on being appropriate in each phase.

The trip across the Solent from Yarmouth to Lymington is more scenic than the one from Cowes and the East to Portsmouth. For a start, there are views of the Needles, and then of Hurst Castle as Lymington is approached.

There are much darker things coming from this chapter onwards.

CHAPTER 11
This was too much, as I found out later. I found myself lying on the sofa in the living room, and my mother, bless her, had put a damp flannel on my forehead.

CHAPTER 10
I woke up disoriented. Somebody was snoring gently, and the back of my neck felt damp. There was an arm draped across me, and I needed to pee.
