It was a typical evening at my mother’s. She had the Glass Tit on as I read, watching some “Britain’s Got X-Rated Dancing Talent” or something, a style of programme I find profoundly irritating.

Why is it impossible to talk to my mother? I have read all of the literature, all of the academic papers I can find on ideational and interpersonal function, and how to use it. I have looked up the non-verbal aspects, I have even practised them, but it makes no difference. She talks, I sit quietly.

CHAPTER 1
I don’t drive. I have a licence, but I have never felt the need to own a car. This has brought all sorts of odd questions into my life, from friends, relatives, employers, passing drivers keen to share their wisdom and advice as to the desirability of my using the cycle path.

I came back from my trip to forn paartz and tonight was the evening of my folk club. I played....and you have to understand the difference between the music and "the dots", which is the written notation.
A member of the club I really respect as a musician came up to me after my bit and complimented me on how I had made the piece my own.
It is difficult to get across to a non-player exactly how nice a compliment that is.

Happy bounce!

I wasn’t really up to anything for a while. I lived off my bounty for a bit, drank too much for a bit longer, and then moved into the obvious line of work for a big hard lad, door work at one of the pubs I had been using. There had been a spot of nastiness, I helped somebody to leave the pub by offering them a choice between staying in the warm or remaining attached to the testicles I was taking out into the rain, and for some reason they all left together.

Not even first light. The chop was making my teeth rattle as the blunt bow slammed into each wave the LCU met, and a couple of the lads were already being sick. The bergen weighed far too much, but I’d managed to snaffle a Mao suit and, much to my surprise, managed to squeeze it in. We were in the second wave, and as we had heard nothing from the shore so far it looked as if we were going to be unopposed. Thank fuck my new boots had come. Too many of the lads were still in ammo boots, but I had done more than enough on Dartmoor in mine to know exactly how bad they were.

Not only was the fiddler I largely based a character on there, but I heard that his old collaborator of years past has now come out as transgender, so all threads seemed to be drawn together. I played bodhran for a while with a woman who loved to syncopate, and we ended up having a duet of sorts which was huge fun; I then got asked by one of the audience for a lesson (blush)
