Fireworks

Here's a bit of shameless self-promotion - my online photo gallery of Kenilworth's fireworks do (held a few hours ago). It's one of the most popular in the region, typically attracting >10,000 people for the half hour display. The approach roads to the castle are closed off to aid in herding people to/from the site.

And for comparison, last year's lot:

How NOT to drive a forklift...

Could this be used as a perfect example of "Having a bad day"?
This accident happens in a warehouse in Moscow filled with glass bottles of vodka and cognac...The driver apparently escaped with minor injuries to one of his legs, but the accident apparently cost the owners of the warehouse around  £60,000.

November 5th

Exactly 404 years ago, a soldier and explosives expert attempted one of the most audacious terrorist plots ever.

His plan was to destroy the UK's House of Lords during State Opening, during which the building would contain the entire parliament and the King. As we all know, various events conspired to disrupt the plan and arrest Guy before he lit the fuse.

Hired as a man, fired as a woman

I especially loved this quote:
Her boss, Georgia Legislative Counsel Sewell Brumby, saw it differently.

“It makes me think about things I don’t like to think about, particularly at work … I think it’s unsettling to think of someone dressed in women’s clothing with male sexual organs inside that clothing,” said Brumby, in a deposition taken May 11th in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

Squid in the mouth

This usually lives at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America site, at: http://www.sfwa.org/2009/06/turkey-city-lexicon-a-primer-for..., but it's also used by a friend of mine who teaches a MFA in writing. I'm not much of a one for science fiction, but these are pretty good rules for writing anything. Don't feel bad if you've broken several - as far as I can tell Martin Amis has broken at least two of the rules here, and I know I'm a sinner in at least as many ways - I'm definitely guilty of "squid in the mouth" and "pushbutton words".

Geocities

There is still a bit of time to save off your fav sites on geocities if you hurry and are lucky. I just checked some I had bookmarked. 8 out of 10 are gone, including some of the best, but many are still visible. I guess yahoo is zapping them one at a time instead of just pulling a plug. Good luck.

Moorehouse why?!

I was wondering if anyone heard about the dress code Moorehouse is instituting. There's the typical no baggy pants, doo rags and so on but as part of this list wearing Women's Clothing is banned.
Gah can you be so closeminded?! You educated MLK and you're being so intolerant here! X-( It's a piece of clothing you phobic people!

Thank you, Thank you for the sisterhood we have here.

As another week ends, and I continue to grow, struggling with life, but keeping my head held high, I am drawn to reflect about our community and the support we share with one another. I am grateful for all those who have helped me get to this point. I have learned valuable lessons of love and friendship. I have learned or relearned the beauty of music again, and the grace of crying and laughter.

I Don't Comment

I don't know if this is the right formun(?). I don't blog, I don't understand it. I have been reading this site for about +1 years. About the time when Fictionmania and Shaphire(?) went into a black hole. Thank GOD for Big Closet!!!

I really like this site. In most cases, people are very supportive of each other.

I VOTE for stories or authors I like. I can't comment, as it take me to places I don't want to go.

The Poem ' From Mrs Tiresias '

On Thursday evening, I was able to go with a friend and her daughter to see Carol Ann Duffy, the Poet Laureate give a reading on National Poetry Day.
It was held at the University of Winchester and, naturally enough was a full house.;

One of the poems was entitled ‘From Mrs Tiresias’ it begins with

All I know is this:
He went out for his walk a man And came home a female.

How did I get into this?

This blog entry contains several questions. I'd be pleased if any other readers or authors here were able to respond.

Have you ever stumbled across an author's work, and thought to yourself "this is really good, I'm going to read any material of theirs that I find"? You know, the sort of writing that you find you can't put down; that you find yourself still reading at 1am.

(US) House Votes to Expand Definition of Hate Crimes

From today's New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/09/us/politics/09hate.html

This is step towards expanding "the definition of violent federal hate crimes to those committed because of a victim’s sexual orientation, a step that would extend new protection to lesbian, gay and transgender people."

Mantyhose?

It’s a trend the makers of 1993 spoof movie Robin Hood: Men in Tights, obviously didn’t envisage, but the market for men’s hosiery has reportedly taken off in recent years.

Last month UK department store Selfridges responded to the demand and began stocking (no pun intended) a range of extra-tough tights designed exclusively for men.

Fired Transgendered teacher fighting back!

A teacher who is transitioning F to M was fired by a school board because "his gender change from woman to man is not aligned with the teachings of the Catholic church or its values." And he's fighting back, using Alberta's human rights act. Going to be interesting seeing how this case ends, because he's fighting the Catholic church.

Arachnophobes beware!

Arachnophobes beware! Apparently there are going to be a lot of our 8 legged friends around this autumn (well, in the UK at least)!

Conservationists say there could be more spiders and daddy longlegs than usual this autumn because of favourable breeding conditions. Researchers at insect charity, Buglife, said last year's wet autumn meant the larvae of daddy longlegs had plenty of decaying plant matter to eat. Experts also said this year's temperate summer had been good for spiders.

The only woman in the French Foreign Legion

There's a fascinating article on the BBC website about Susan Travers - the only woman to have served in the French Foreign Legion.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8271773.stm

She certainly lead an amazing life. Her greatest regret, she said, was not to have been born a boy, although she admitted that as such she would never have done half the things she'd done or enjoyed the life she led subsequently.

It's all how you look at it!

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,
'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.'

Another Sex Dispute, but This Athlete Has Four Legs

I thought someone might be interested in this article about a non-human intersexed athlete:

I wonder if most species of mammals have about the same incidence of intersex conditions?

Access Blocked

Hello Everyone,
This morning I was shocked to learn that I was blocked from accessing this site, as well as Fictionmania, Crystal's Story Site and Sapphire's Place. The notice I was shown stated that bigclosetr.us was banned from this network because it had been classified as having nudity, pornography and sexually explicit material.
Excuse me, but I missed the announcement that the first amendment had been repealed!
Has anyone else experienced this? Is readership down because of it?

This is a GREAT story by Randalynn

I first read No Obligation about 13 months ago or so. I just re-read it again these last couple of nights. This story sucks the reader in and grabs hold of you and doesn't let you go until you are done with it. It's the multifaceted fantasy of an epic character who starts out male and ends up as a young female Wyatt Earp for the universe.

Wonderfully written, no weak parts to it, and shows the power of love and compassion.

Intersexed Fish?

Here is a link to an article on Feminized Fish. The male fish are now producing eggs and showing secondary female sex chacteristics. They say this is from birth control bills and hormone treatments being dumped in the water.

Jaycee’s grandmother (Joan Curry) worked for Viewtech for almost 25 years. Many of us vividly recall Joan’s relentless efforts to recover Jaycee. Many, both here and at Volt Information Sciences (our former parent company), helped Joan produce and distribute flyers and posters following the kidnapping and for many years thereafter.

EAFOAB Anniversary Imminent

Yesterday, I clicked on one of the Jewel Box links on the TopShelf home page. It was Jewel Box Two: a page listing "stories that appeared on Big Closet approximately two years ago today."

Scrolling down towards the bottom, what do we see?

Next to one another are the first two episodes of EAFOAB, with part 1 dated July 17, 2007. Funnily enough, the events of the past week have seen the destruction of one Cathy's very expensive carbon-fibre bikes, as happened in the original episode.

My Furry Child, Brittany Passed Away Today an Obit of sorts

Brittany, passed away today. She was 1 month shy of her 19th birthday. She's been my constant companion over the years. She came to me via ex-wife when we got married. Within 24 hours of meeting, Brittany and I were friends. When my back collapse made me virtually bed-ridden for 3 years, she was always with me. She's had various health issues over the years, and I've managed to keep her going. The last 6 months have been hard as Brittany developed high blood pressure and lost her sight. She'd lost her hearing a few years ago as well.
