Thirty-six barking dogs make an incredible amount of noise. Even eliminating the nine puppies leaves me with too many dogs to look at fairly in one session. I’m beginning to think this plan may be harder than I thought. O. K., eliminate the two very old dogs. I need pets that will live a number of more years. Just look at dog sized dogs. Pekes and miniature poodles are for old ladies. That gets it down to nineteen dogs. After two and a half hours of playing fetch, scratching bellies and a bit of testing for previous training I have six dogs to see again tomorrow.

After a long journey over the mountains, mail has to be delivered to the local ruler.

The voice on the other end of the phone surprised him. It was not at all masculine. Had he not been calling a man, he would have thought that he was talking to a woman.

“Is that Eve?” he asked.

“It is I,” she said playfully. “Eve. The first of women. At your service.” He liked her already. She would be perfect.

“Would you be available for a longer-term hire?” he asked. “Maybe starting this afternoon and finishing around 1:00 in the morning?”

Summer was the best time of the year for kids, and even with the added stress, for parents having the extra time to be with the kids was a mixed blessing. The kids having time to just be kids added to the parents’ responsibilities. Not one loving parent would complain about the increased difficulty in juggling work-life balance. At the same time, they did know the extra part in their life would add strain to their daily routine.

Dave’s ‘Femme Makeover of a Lifetime’ had been arranged and paid for months in advance. All Dave had to do was show up, lay still and let the makeover crew do their job. No effort required. What’s not to like?

No surgeries performed, no tattoos given, no obscenities permitted. Extra services available at an additional cost. No checks.” That seemed reasonable.

3. Roshambo, Mon Amour

I walked until the sun was high over my right shoulder. Then walked some more as it sank towards the horizon. Afternoon brought new problems as the glare of the sun made it hard to see the distant smoke.

Rasufelle and I played a story game where we each took turns adding a sentence to a story. This was the result:

Aaron glared at the situation before him, using every ounce of willpower he had to try and force it to change while knowing that it was a lost cause.

The cheerleader in front of him had a wide grin, but he was sure he could see the evil glint in her eyes.

"You agreed to the terms, so you can either pay up . . . or do the forfeit," she said in a low, menacing voice.

He sighed, knowing paying up was not really an option.

I was a little embarrassed as I approached the table. Karl is new to our school but he’s already found a couple of other guys to sit with. That was just going to make this a little harder. “Hi, can I sit here?"

They all looked up at me but it was pretty clear who I was looking at. He looked kind of surprised but said “yeah, I guess so.” I set my tray down and looked at him before starting my lunch.

"Ouch!"

"Did widdums hurt his widdle diddums?"

"Keep that crap up and widdums will puke all over your diddums."

"I show wifely concern for my big, strong husband and what do I get? Threats!"

"It's not a threat, it's a promise. I'm in pain, woman."

Luke and Lori were feeling anxious when coming home from dinner with Pappi and Memaw. The twins felt uneasy for different reasons. Luke was distressed because he knew his parents were fighting. He felt like the reason was because of him. Everything his mom was saying just to get peace weighed down on him. Words have meaning and those words were taken to heart. Because she never took his side, Luke started feeling he caused whatever went wrong.

01 – Far from Happy

When I reached the kitchen, I noticed that daddy was seating at the head of the table. To his left was mommy and to his right was Lily. The main meat dish for tonight, has I had correctly guessed was indeed cornered beefs, served along side a big bowl of stewed cabbage and a few potatoes. It was a simple homespun meal. The bread though was oddly enough a whole loaf of garlic bread. Offering my family a smile, I took my seat and folded my hands in my lap.

An outsider who was a regular on Saturday night asked Pete, “May I try a glass of poteen?”

“Ask Pat, it’s his liquor,” replied Pete, “It’s not for sale.”

“Surely,” replied Pat. Put the price of a whiskey in the kid’s Christmas party collection box. Pour your man a glass, Pete.”

I awoke in a small dark space.
My knees pressed against my chest and my arms wrapped about my shins.
My sense of balance told me I was the right way up.

Touch alone was enough to tell me I was naked,
My skin felt soft and hairless.
In contrast, the hair on my head cascaded in heavy locks of over my shoulders and upper back.
The way my thighs pressed together and the way my muscles responded when I squeezed, told me something else.
Just as I was certain that I had ten fingers and ten toes, I was also certain that I was female now.
