It didn't take Mikey too long to find what we needed. And thank God it was San Francisco, so we could actually find an outfit sized for my long frame. I think it took us less time to find the costume than to actually get me into it. Were corsets originally invented for the Spanish Inquisition? I imagined this must be how sausage meat feels being crammed into a casing.

Chapter Four: Where Are You Going, Said Meet-on-the-Road

A few hours later I was walking out of the school gates reflecting that life could definitely be worse. Maddy and I were becoming firm friends and I seemed to get on well enough with her immediate circle. I know I wasn’t at school to make friends but it was better than the alternative. Also it meant I didn’t have the added hurdle of trying to persuade Vincent to date a complete social outcast.

Joseph and Gillian say “why is Gabriella going to live with Uncle Mario.” Beth says “it’s to get her away from the person bullying her.” And I then say “if you are having trouble as well you can come as well.” Gillian asks “what time are you leaving in the morning.” I say “early real early.” Beth says “if you want to go pack seven day worth of clothes and be ready to go when he says get up.” That’s when Gaby says she ready for bed and I go to tuck her in and tell her the rules for traveling.

Chapter 3

Strange Days

My decision was made for me by an unexpected visit by Rose’s brother Roger. She had not heard form him in a long time. He was a tall lanky athletic sort that would look right at home on any soccer field. He was pushy and opinionated (jerk), but seemed to really know what he wanted. He intimidated me a little, I guess (duh). Rose loved him a lot, so I put up with him. Trouble was that he thought life owed him something for being gay. So he pushed every one around with it. I just shook my head and stayed out of the way.

Chapter 2

"Have you heard the rumor?" one of the moms asked Aunt Amy in the wardrobe room.

"What rumor? she said as she worked on my tunic for my role in Sleeping Beauty.

"There will be a transgendered child attending the middle school next year," the mom said.

"Oh really?" Aunt Amy said before she told me to stop fidgeting.

"I swear I'm dealing with Meg," she said as she put another pin in the tunic.

"What would you think would happen if that child took class here?" the woman asked my aunt.

All week I thought about sleeping in the night gown. Now it lay next to me on the bed. Mom knowing what I liked to do, and being OK about it, should have been a relief. I should be embracing her acceptance. Instead, I sat hesitant. What if I want to go back? What if I never want to go back? I thought about what she said. Do I enjoy wearing girl’s clothes? Yes. Do I enjoy pretending to be a girl? Is it pretending? I know I am a boy. Correction I have a boy’s body. I had many questions and no real answers.

The Cruise – Voyage of Discovery

Cruise Diary – Day 6

It was barely light when I woke up the next morning. From bed I reached out and grabbed the remote and switched on the TV. Flicking through the channels I looked for BBC News hoping there might be something about Dad. Nothing just the usual stuff employment problems issues with the economy stuff that probably should have interested me but didn’t.

James:

They say that tall people have a competitive edge. I can't confirm that, but I do know that short men, such as myself, are at a disadvantage unexplainable by grades or accomplishments. In my last year of law school I got as many interviews as anyone else in the upper 10% of my class, but however smoothly they went, no job offers materialized. Thus, I graduated with no job and no prospect for one.
