I slept that night with Simon’s arm around me, all night I think. He certainly groaned when he moved it on rising the next morning. I offered to kiss it better, but he rubbed it a bit and then went into the shower.

I showered afterward, then woke the children. Jenny was down first, much to my surprise, so the kettle was boiling by the time I got downstairs. I noticed Billie was becoming more private in her toilet, while the other three often went into the bathroom, the bath and sometimes the shower together. However, the hormones were beginning to take effect and I noticed she looked a little broader in the beam and had little nubs growing on her chest.

I did offer to let her have a bedroom to herself, but she said she still enjoyed the company of the other girls at bedtime. I had a feeling she’d soon change her mind as she became more self-conscious as puberty, albeit an artificial one, takes effect.

Danny almost fell down the stairs he was so sleepy, and when he began sneezing, I suspected he was getting hayfever or allergic rhinitis. His eyes looked watery and he sneezed loads of times before he left.

I offered to phone the doctor and get a prescription for him which he thanked me for doing. As I wanted to speak with Sister Maria, I’d have to make the call when I got back home. I was just leaving when Stella appeared like the wreck of the Hesperus. I think she’d slept even less than I and Gareth didn’t look much better.

At the school, I sought out the headmistress only to be told she was at a meeting and wasn’t expected until the afternoon. My head buzzing with frustration, I drove home collecting some extra milk and bread on the way–these days I rarely had time to make the latter, so when I did it was treated like a delicacy and disappeared in one sitting.

I got home and after phoning the doctor’s–a prescription would be sent to our nearest pharmacy to collect after lunch–I settled down with a cuppa to feed Catherine. She’d already had her breakfast so this was a top up. Stella sat opposite me with Fiona fixed to her chest.

“D’you actually enjoy this?” she asked me.

“Yes, don’t you?”

“No–I’m not even sure if the poor little thing is getting any.”

“Well express it and then bottle feed her,” I suggested.

“No thanks–that’s even more uncomfortable.”

Wait till she’s got teeth, Stella, then you’ll know uncomfortable. “Your milk has come in?” I asked.

“That’s what they said at the clinic.”

I probably produced enough to feed both children, but I wasn’t going to offer because I knew Stella would take advantage of me again. “Is she putting on weight.”

“No, she’s lost a fraction, but they often do.”

Puddin’ appeared, doing her party piece, “Shit, shit ,shit,” she said walking through and Stella looked horrified, Gareth nearly choked on his coffee, I simply shrugged–but she was still getting a reaction so she’d continue doing it.

“Where did she hear that?”

“I have no idea, but you know what they’re like, human blotting paper.”

“Sounds like you, Cathy, it’s one of your favourite utterances.”

At this point Gareth suddenly remembered he had something urgent to do on his computer. I let him go–coward.

There were lots of things I could have said by way of response, I chose to ignore them all and Stella’s comment. “She does it every now and again, we ignore it but she does tend to give visitors a shock.”

“Oh so she sees us as visitors?” Stella fired back a sarcastic reply.

“Yes, she hasn’t seen you for a while, and she barely knows Gareth.”

“She called me Mummy earlier.”

“I’m glad she did, she usually calls me Annie-Affie.” I didn’t ask if Stella had prompted the appellation, ‘Come to Mummy,’ sort of thing.

“This little bugger, keeps going to sleep,” said Stella and her elder child walked through saying, ‘Bugger, bugger, bugger.’

“Where did she hear that?”

“Just now, from her mother’s lips if I’m not mistaken.”

“She wouldn’t have picked it up that quickly–surely?”

“You’d be surprised, just don’t swear.”

“Of course you’re such an expert on babies,” she said rising from her chair and taking Fiona back to her room.

“I’m no expert, Stella, unless you’re comparing me to you,” I muttered under my breath.

“Oh, where did Stella go?” asked Jenny bringing the washing down from the bathrooms, “I was hoping for a little cuddle.”

“She’s gone off for a sulk because I deigned to suggest she’d overheard Stella using the B word.”

“Has she done the S one yet?”

“She has.”

“That’s you, isn’t it?”

“Probably,” no point in denying it–still it’s a pity we’re such a load of devil worshippers–because it would be amusing to see how the vicar would deal with her foul mouth. If she went round saying, cock-a-doodle–do, would she be fowl mouthed? I snorted at my own silliness. Unfortunately, Stella had just returned and she thought I’d laughed at her.

“What’s so funny?” she demanded.

There was no way I was going to tell her–so I told her something else–“I was thinking about seeing you at the play last night.”

“I wasn’t aware either I or it were particularly funny.”

“You weren’t it was more that I didn’t expect to see you.”

“That was one of the reasons why we did it.”

“Give me a heart attack, you mean?”

“That’s right take it the wrong way, like you always do.”

“Stella, I was making light of it–it was a lovely surprise.”

“I hear what your mouth is saying–your eyes are saying something dfferent.”

“Are they? I hadn’t noticed, I wasn’t aware they could say anything.”

“Ah there’s our difference–I’ve studied gesture and body language,” she trilled.

Fat lot of good it’s done her, so it’s either all hogwash–you know H.Potter, esquire’s school–only joking–or she did the wrong course. I chose not to say anything, but an expert in non-verbals like Stella, would get my message loud and clear–Piss off.

Puddin’ walked in, “Come to Mummy, darling,” cooed Stella opening her arms for a hug and the little monster walked over to me and began to climb up onto my lap.

“Me wuv Annie-Affie.”

If looks could kill, both Pud and I would be either dead or on life support. “You are the giddy limit, Catherine Watts–fancy stealing your own sister’s baby–haven’t you got enough of your own yet; or is this some sort of fetish?”

“I beg your pardon?” I said sharply.

“You know what I mean, you collect other people’s children because you can’t have your own–just leave mine out of it.”

I was incandescent, the nerve of the woman–to bite the hand that feeds her in my own home. She’s been ill–she isn’t aware of what she’s saying–but one more jibe and she walks or leaves on a stretcher.

“Annie-Affie, doan wike, nasty wady.” Puddin’ was holding on to my leg.

“That does it, you brat–I’m your mother–you foolish child–I’m your bloody mother.”

“No wike you, bloody wady, go way.”

I nearly choked.

“That’s right–typical of you, isn’t it–poisoning little minds.”

“That’s not right, Stella, Cathy shows her your photo quite regularly and reminds her that you’re her mother,” Jenny interrupted the argument.

“You would say that, wouldn’t you, you’re on her payroll.” Stella slammed into Jenny, who wasn’t having any of it.

“It might be Cathy and Simon who pay me, but I’ve spent quite a lot of time looking after your child–so don’t try it on with me–I’m not some unbalanced lunatic.”

Stella was almost apoplectic, she made a funny noise and practically ran from the room.

“Did I say the wrong thing?” asked Jenny.

“I–um–think you might have.”

“Tough,” she walked off to finish the laundry.

“Me fwighten,” said Puddin’ pulling at my leg. I bent down and picked her up and cuddled her hoping Stella had calmed down before she saw us.

Episode 1400 approacheth

Do readers want me to carry on, assuming it's acceptable to our hostess and webseite meisterin?

Angharad

Angharad

Er...

That was a joke, right? I don't always get the humor from across the pond...

Up to you, but I know you're usually my first read everyday after work. I'd really miss it if you decided to stop...

Does Cathy like dormice?

Is it nearly half past midnight as I type this?
Is the current Vicar of Rome a Catholic?
Do you like cycling?

As long as you've got the will, motivation and inspiration to continue, I think you should know by now that any request of that ilk will be met with an increasingly loud chorus of "Yes please!"

Besides which, I can't imagine that Stella will fully recover and they'll all dart up to Scotland for the increasingly delayed wedding blessing in the next ten episodes!

There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't...

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

In a word, MOOOOOOOOOOORE

Just when I get into it and caught up and you think I would want you to stop? Nay I say. I suspect a few other peoples might agree. Ask again when you get to part 3k. Maybe.

More Please!

Ummm... Yes....

I think you should approach the Guinness Book of Records for the longest web serial too.

While I am cringing (badly) on what is going on with Stella I would still like the serial to continue. There is so much to resolve still. What is going on with the blue light, where is it going and what will Cathy become?

Cathy is quite special enough that she must leave a public mak on the world besides the mark she has made around her with and to her family and friends.

Lots of things to resolve.

I'll be brief. Carry on!

I'll be brief.
Carry on!

{I leave a trail of Kudos as I browse the site. Be careful where you step!}

Please carry on

But only if you still have the desire to write it. Would miss it though.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!

Enough?

I think Stella needs to have a reality check. Cathy is not her bloody maid, or some kind of stgepping stone. She's saved Stella numerous times, and done so much more for the silly twat that it's all beginning to sound hopeless. Stella needs someone to sit her down and have a serious hearft to heart, and in my opinion, that's Gareth's job. He could end up leaving and taking Fiona-especially if Stella pulls another crazy fit, and the family stands behind him! Stella is a spoiled brat, and needs to hear some hard truths.

Wren

Drat and Double Drat

Stella is a sick woman. She needs help, and fast. When she becomes irrational, she's as dangerous as a cornered cobra. I think we need some serious blue light or there might be some very serious consequences.

Please do carry on?

Hear, hear, please do carry on.

My God, Stella has gotten significanly worse! It is one thing to be quietly paranoid like me, but to be abrasive about it is beyond the pale, I think. With Stella it does not seem to be a long way from unkind words to the butcher knife.

You have me Angharad, how are you going to write yourself out of this one? Perhaps the Earth Mother, the one who gave the blue light to Cathy should take poor Stel down and sit on her?

'Course

I mean, has the world changed and the Pope is now celebrating Samhain?

Stella is gonna have a wee explosion soon.

Stella just should not have babies period. Full stop. She does not seem to have much maternal instincts at all.

The only one is whether it is still fun for you to do. It must at times be a right pain. But even if I comment infrequently it is one of the first things I look for each morning here.

Now Stella, she does need a bit of help doesn't she. Serious insecurity and a bit of nuttsoness (technical term) can be a dangerous thing, sigh. Puddin and blue light therapy maybe?

Scribble on as long as you enjoy.

Kristina

A no brainer!

I mean, really, even a blonde could figure out she wants the series to continue.

Been Here, Done That

So, here we go again. Stella behaving childishly emotionally, if not completely less than sane, and going into meltdown mode. The last several times we've seen this, she's either attempted suicide, or lashed out, grievously injuring someone in the household, too often a child.

I see no sign whatsoever that she's improved after her recent residential treatment. So, a) I can't believe they released her from care, and b) I can't believe Cathy isn't at DefCon 4 right now to rally the troops, get the mental health facility on the line, and intercept Stella before she does something stupid. Again. It's not like Stella's destructive behavior is a surprise anymore, and she's just shot off a big red rocket to launch the next round of hostilities and/or mayhem.

Oh, no. Here we go again.

I think the bard...

I think the bard wrote a tale that applies... "The Taming of the Shrew"...

I hope Garth's up to it!!!

*sighs* Sad that it's the kids (mostly) that end up paying for it... And, Puddin's certainly paying right now. *sighs*

Thanks,
Anne

I feel so bad for Stella

(and Cathy). It wasn't that long ago that Stella really was Cathy's best friend. Now she so explosive and delusional that she's a danger to everyone around her. Cathy shouldn't be sitting down cuddling a child right now. She should be calling for reinforcements. I wish that somehow Stella could be cured... is that too much to ask for? The tale has enough villians without poor Stella killing herself or someone else.

Continue! Please!

Stella can't be serious. Back home less than 24 hours and upset the child she hasn't seen or interacted with for almost 9 months has bonded to Cathy and Jenny. Stella's reaction does not help the situation. Stella is jealous.

I believe Stella needs HELP and 10 episodes are not enough to resolve this, with the play, etc. BUT, if posting every day keeps you from other projects, then reduce it. Although, I'm do appreciate having 'BIKE' to read everyday. I selfishly want to see it continue, daily. You are one of my favorite authors. You and 'BIKE' are an anchor here.

You've created a monster here. By even mentioning you are thinking of stopping the series, some of your readers will be following Stella to the loony bin. But, I am not pressuring to keep writing. >:D

Time to stop ....Yeah right

You stop writing this ad I will fly to England, track you down and sing.

Believe me it is not a pleasant thing. Mwah ha ha ha!

..

Pretty please continue as long as you have ideas.

BTW can you say suicide watch? Stella is at the tipping point. Oh did they tie her tubes? It was suggested by her doctors a while back as pregnancy seems to trigger mental instability in Stella. If so she might be very depressed beyond any hormonal thing by having lost the one thing that made her superior to Cathy, that she could conceive and carry a child. In all other ways Cathy, a born male is a far better female than her and it is tearing her apart. Hell Cathy even is nursing children bar better than Stella. Odd thing is except for the mental illness Stella is a fine woman smart and talented. But with the mental instability is isn't seeing that.

Or will she attack and try to kill Cathy or one or more of the kids?

John in Wauwatosa

P.S. and what is with the Nun Number One? It's like she's huiding from Cathy.

John in Wauwatosa

Oops.

Wrong foot?

Sounds like things are going to be sticky but hopefully only for a while.
Let's hope Stella hasn't got post matal depression already. I think she just feels very, very vulnerable and nervous of losing her child.

Cathy's going to have her work cut out ... again! Let's hope the 'others' pull their weight this time. Cathy had better have a long, long talk with Gareth already he seems to be ducking from his responsibilities. Typical man.

Interesting chapter Angie.
Still lovin' it.

Love and hugs.

Gareth / Stella

The way I interpreted it, he just assumed they were going to have an argument and he decided (perhaps wisely, in retrospect) not to join in. However, now it's escalated far beyond that, he's now faced with the unenviable challenge of trying to reconcile Stella with the rest of the family.

Having said that, Stella only gave birth a couple of days ago - her hormones are still all over the place, and it looks as though she's going through a period of Maternity blues (which typically last a few days). Let's hope they dissipate over the next few days / weeks and don't develop into full-blown Postpartum depression (which can last up to a year) or even Postpartum psychosis (which can last a few weeks with treatment, several months without - although at least with the number of people present in the household, the more extreme version of that condition is exceedingly unlikely to occur).

Bike Resources

There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't...

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

well, umm, errr - Silly woman that Angharad is -

you turn us into addicts reading this wonderfull saga, and ask.
.
My answer is a DEF. yes, please contine. Tho after doing this for so long I can understand your doubts and this must be taxing to do. I'd hate to see this saga end, but do as you must.
.
I think BIKE is onto the correct assumption of Stella, besides, put your self in Stella's shoes, her 1st is calling another woman not quite mommy, but definately knows whom to run to as such and for past nine months (has it been that long ?) depended on Kathy and Jenny. So it's not suprising the young one is hesitant to think she would react any other way.
.
As far as Stella goes, I dont think she realizes yet, what her absence meant to the child. - In fact I'm more suprized at the Clinic and or Kathy didnt think to re-unite child and mother long B4. I think Garrith will have to play a serious role in keeping the peace, but in the end, both women will come to terms.
.
I do see a new nanny coming into picture tho...almost has to be with the ever expanding extended family. I see some boiling over this till there is a truce or understanding. but i dont see Stella and Garrath moving just yet, nor do I see Stella, doing anything stupid to her self. If it does, then I'd sue that clinic's tail off for releasing Stella in 1st place. It was their job to be helping her re-adjust/adjust back into a normal life as much as watching her @ clinic.
.
Angharad - do as need be....but I for one would be sorry to see this saga end near term. it's quite powerful with lots of really good provoking thought and insight into todays living and how people are coping with life in general...... HUGGS

In answer to your question Angharad

Yes PLEASE, But as many others have said, Only if you want too...Even after nearly 1400 episodes time spent in the company of
the Cameron's is still as enjoyable as when i first started reading it .... Thanks for all you hard work .

Just checking

Angharad's picture

numbers of comments were dropping off and I wondered if people were getting tired of it - I'm still happy to write it - for a bit longer. I give notice that the week after next I might be otherwise occupied with a visitor - so can't guarantee to post daily.

Stella and continuing with the story

Julia Miller's picture

Well, I know for a fact you will continue this story. I think there are two ways to go with Stella, and I guess I will see what the future episodes show us, but either Stella will have an untimely end, or she will have a special intervention with the Blue Light Therapy.

Stella always feels bad
