Impact of Adding a Cover & Additional Story Comments

You’ve written your story and now are faced with deciding whether or not to create a cover.

I’ve posted about one hundred and fifty stories on BC and have never created a cover. Mel and Erin have made covers for all of my Doppler Press books. I’ve often wondered what difference an attractive cover makes to BC readers.

CONTROVERSY Surrounds Story Contest

This blog's views, thoughts, and opinions belong solely to the author and not necessarily to the management of Big Closet, the Writing Contest committee, or any other group or individual.

I have long contended that there is very little correlation between the number of kudos, hits, and comments received and the quality of the story.

Another Set of Comments on Contest Stories

Wow! We have received eighty-four entries for our contest.

Thank you.

We appreciate the effort it takes to produce a story for a contest. We also appreciate that all of you recognize that judging a contest like this is highly subjective and certainly not a science. All Emma and I can do is give this our best efforts, which I'm confident we're doing.

For most of the participants, the only compensation they will receive will be your kudos, comments, and reads. The following list might help you find a few more stories to read. The titles are a link.

Second Tranche My Comments on Contest Stories

Resolution Revelations

Aylesea has written an above-average story that brings us inside the life of a depressed young lady. This story is a good example of what humor can add to any story.

My Thoughts on Some Story Entries

Jo, Emma, and I love to write. We love to have our stories read and appreciated.

A primary goal of the current contest is to spur more people to read more stories. With that in mind, I've prepared remarks about fifteen stories entered in this contest. Eventually, I will post remarks about every story entered. Emma will be posting similar lists.

Please give these stories a chance.

One Month Left to Enter

There’s about a month left to enter a story in the current writing contest. The more-than-expected number of stories have sparkled with quality. Of the sixty-one stories, I scored fifteen in the excellent category. There’s plenty of great reading to be had here.

To date, the contest has generated:

Great Start for Contest

By the end of today, the blog announcing the New Year’s Resolution Writing Contest will have received over three thousand hits. That level of activity has resulted in thirty-seven new stories published on BC.

We don’t have comparative statistics, but it appears the level of comment activity is up.

A new author is among those who have posted a story entry.

Given that the contest opened for submissions less than a week ago -- we’re pleased with the initial results.

Writing Contest -- My Approach to Judging

Judging fiction is subjective. . .based on personal feelings and opinions.

I have helped judge several Big Closet contests in the past. In those instances, I picked the top three or five stories.

For the current writing contest (entries to commence 1/1), I’ve been asked to assign a number between one and one hundred for each story. Emma Anne Tate will also assign a number between one and one hundred. We will not consult or know what each other has assigned for a “score.” The total of our scores will be the score for the story. Highest score wins.

Is There a "T" in Team?

Author’s note: Joannebarbarella, Emma Anne Tate, and I are sponsoring a writing contest. Details are available in a blog on the home page. The three of us are not eligible to enter the contest but we decided to each write a sample story to help promote more entries. I’m coming to you as the last visitor in this Christmas Carol. I hope you enjoy my offering and give our contest your consideration. - Jill

Random Thoughts about an Existential Threat to Big Closet

Ask yourself -- if I tried to call up Big Closet on my computer and it was unavailable and appeared to be gone forever, what would I do?

If your answer is something along the lines of – that wouldn’t be a problem for me I would simply spend more time reading on _____ or writing stories for _____ -- then you are probably more of a taker than a giver in regard to this site – and that is understandable.

For me . . . the existence of BC is a huge part of my life. I give to BC to maintain that part of me.

From the Cheap Seats

Recently a story was published with a rape scene.

The story was tagged “explicit content.” Beyond that, the story unfolded logically and gave plenty of notice to the reader that a rape would occur. Further, the story was written by an author who writes femdom stories and has published them here for two decades.

I wouldn’t have read the story if the controversy had not occurred and been chronicled in other blogs. I assume several other readers read the story for the same reason.

Now You've Gone and Done It -- Emma Anne Tate!

You've set an impossible bar for civility, creativity, and positive influence.

Your writing is amazing and makes us all pea-green with envy.

Your demeanor is above reproach. . .at least a foot above the highest reproach known to womankind.

But where you really have us all outdone is in your blogs that inspire people to do good things.

Your latest series of blogs about authors' favorite short stories is a prime example. (I hesitate to use the word "prime" because a coach out west might have that word legally restricted to his ego.)

Free Novella

I've written a new novella called Andy and Dawn.

The story involves a young man, in 1960, who is discovered by a Hollywood talent agent while washing cars. Of course, through a series of events the young man comes to question his/her gender identity. The story is populated with pop culture figures of that era.

As usual, it is my intent to give this book to Doppler Press. All proceeds will go to supporting this site. Rasufelle is already working on the cover art.

Hello, Again

Time brings perspective. My writing process has remained consistent over the years. Once I have a decent manuscript, I set it aside to give me the perspective of a reader when I do a final edit.

In early May, things on BC seemingly became toxic for me. I had lost my rudder and needed a change in perspective. So – I took a time out.

Nothing about BC had changed to elicit the feelings I was experiencing. The fault rested with me.

Mea Culpa

I apologize for wasting everyone's time.

For over twenty years I've brought a passionate level of involvement to this site.

Lately, that passion has resulted in less than satisfactory results.

Recently, I was characterized as "cold, unprofessional" and accused of driving writers away from this site.

Recently, I was told that my involvement in a thread had caused a meaningless fight which had wasted everyone's time.

Five Million Reasons to See Light at the End of the Tunnel

Just over forty years ago I was sitting in a Palm Springs hotel bar when Reggie Jackson came in and sat on the stool next to me.

I asked Mr. October what time it was just so I could tell people Reggie had given me the time of day.

That was a good day for me.

So was today. Teflon Don finally was held accountable. All the Trump wannabees should have learned today that doubling down until you win or the clock runs out doesn't always work.

I Sure Hope

During my business career, I was mainly in marketing. Selling involves a lot of rejection. In order to make a sale you have to take a risk. The process involves a lot of very necessary motivational support. One of the ways I pushed myself was by keeping a myriad of statistics.

This habit has carried over into my writing. I have a massive spreadsheet that records statistics for my stories and books.

During the last three months, the over twenty books Doppler Press has published for me have received more total reviews than they received for the last over ten years.

Best Disney Songs

Walt Disney can be controversial. He was a man of his times, which means that if judged by current standards he could be considered racist, misogynist, and anti-Semitic.

My opinion of Disney films is based on what I saw through my children’s eyes. For the most part, they’re captivating and highly entertaining.

The soundtracks for Disney films often exceeded the quality of the story or the animation. Disney has managed to work with some of the most talented songwriters and performers of our time.

These are my favorites:

Best Movie Songs

This week I watched the latest segment of Ted Lasso. They skillfully use Raindrops Keep Fallin on My Head in a scene with Jamie teaching Roy how to ride a bike.

I started thinking about songs in movies and eventually created a list of my favorite songs used in movies.

I was amazed to see two Dolly Parton songs in my top ten. Most people probably think of I Will Always Love You as a Whitney Houston song -- but Dolly wrote it and made over ten million dollars in royalties from the Whitney version.

Raindrops on Roses

Food is important to me. I grew up on a farm. We didn’t have any money, so we grew everything we ate, plus we hunted year-round. Nothing quite so tasty as ill-gotten venison. We had cattle, hogs, chickens, and ducks.

A number of years ago I became a pescatarian. It was an answer for high blood pressure, heart disease, and environmental concerns. It was quite a while before I had a name for it. I just cut out meat. As a guest -- I’ll eat what is served and I’ll split a hamburger with my spouse about every other month. But – mostly I eat fruit, nuts, and fish.

Wild Coincidence

Yesterday, I posted a dystopian short story about Paul Conklin and his son Karl.

This morning my daughter delivered a baby boy.

We had no idea what gender the child would be or what names they were considering. They had elected not to know the gender.

They're naming him "Karl."

I'm elated and mystified.

The world seems a thousand times better than it seemed to be when I wrote the story.

What Do You Want from BC?

People come to Big Closet for various reasons. Simply put -- some are readers and others are writers. . .some are both.

But beyond that distinction are the needs people seek to fulfill.

Entertainment – BC is a great place to be entertained. Readers can be amused by a dozen different TG genres. Writers can find readers and be entertained by their feedback. The BC library is vast. The quality of the writing is surprisingly good.

Spare

I just finished reading Spare by Prince Harry.

As I’ve stated before on BC, I was a big fan of Meghan in Suits.

My impression of Prince Harry for years has been that he’s a spoiled, pampered fool.

After reading this book I can easily believe that Rupert Murdock and his ilk have shaped that opinion. It would seem that, at least in that regard, I’m no better than those who have allowed Fox News to convince them that hating trans people is a fulfillment of Biblical instructions.

My Book Sales

All of this has been said before. But the site readership is constantly changing.

Some have suggested that BC is littered by offers to buy my books.

And, I would have to agree that efforts to sell my books are ubiquitous.

However, the sale of my books isn't making me rich. In fact, all of the revenue from the sales goes directly to BC. I don't get any of it.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all!

Five years ago we downsized to our retirement home going from six to two bedrooms. Yesterday three grandchildren, four dogs and eight adults celebrated what amounted to our first day of Christmas. Other than a minor mishap where the butter was left in the microwave and never found its way into the pancakes we survived and are on to five more days of "close" family fun.

I've hung my Kindle on the mantel waiting for Maximum Warp Chapter Ten to drop. Emma. . .it is Friday!

Please Help

This site needs more revenue. Traffic is at the heart of revenue both in selling ads and in donations.

Erin is working on a Google Ads program to bring in more traffic. This has worked in the past.

I'm donating an additional $100 this month above my normal contribution. Emma Anne Tate is also throwing in an additional $100.

Will you please join us in this effort?

Traffic is a long-term solution to the funding problem.

Read This Blog Only If You Want BC to Be Here Next Time You Log On

For at least the last fifteen years, the majority of websites have used a "freemium" approach to business. They sell advertising to cover their costs while not charging for the content. This leads people to believing everything on the internet is free.

It isn't!

BC costs money to maintain. The 200,000 unique visitors a month it attracts allows Erin to sell advertising. However, that advertising only generates a fraction of the revenue needed.

At the end of a long and carefully thought-out comment in another blog, Iolanthe said, “It is always a little distressing when another reader looks down their nose at stories or categories that I prize, but oh well. We're not all in the same place; we don't all have the same tastes.”

As usual, Iolanthe has caused me to think.

Politics

It doesn't matter if you wrap it up in honey and grits, politics are politics.

I try not to live in a liberal echo chamber.

I don't watch the more egregious talking heads on CNN and MSNBC. Every now and again I watch FOX -- to try to understand the conservative viewpoint.

I subscribe to the conservative St. Paul Pioneer Press and the New York Times - for balance.

I read a lot of history and political science books.
