Mantra (Malibu Comics) has a very large hole in her memory. She has to talk to her teenage friend, Lauren Sherwood, who knows a lot about what she needs to find out. Lauren is in a good position to know, because for the last few days she's been the one and only Mantra of Canoga Park.

This is a story based on the Switcher Universe by Melanie Brown but not connected to any others I have read. It does follow the premise that the Switcher has no control over his actions and that the switch is like the Midas Touch that had been postulated in another recent story.

My father’s hand remained firmly planted on my shoulder, and the look in his eyes seemed to suggest he was seriously contemplating physical violence. Which was as much a shock as anything else. I couldn’t remember a single time he’d ever lifted a hand against me.

Fortunately, one of her best friends happens to live in San Francisco, a person who is not only brilliant, but who also measures up as an ultra in her own right.

Chapter Two

When I woke up again I took several minutes to get used to my surroundings as all I could hear was the morning chorus. I also had a rush of memories of growing up as a girl in Phoenix and the people I knew. I now remembered my father, a building consultant, and my mother and her accountancy business.

Chapter One

When I think back to how I got to be where, and what, I am now I find it difficult to believe, even though I lived through every minute of it.

Hey, it's been a while. I'm Taylor... now and I've finally gotten the life I wanted...needed.

Now only if I can get it back on track.

I sat there, stunned. This was bad, very, very bad. I was scared,
and for once I was scared for someone other than myself.

If Meredith stole that money -- if Meredith tried to steal that money,
it was bound to end badly for her.

“We have to get you a phone, and I guess we should talk about allowance.”

“What did you give Celine?” I asked.

He laughed. “Celine was a thief,” he replied. “You don’t need to give money to a thief.”

“Are you kidding me?” she asked, incredulous. “You’re 42 years old!
You don’t need to ask your so-called parents. Seriously!”

“I’m thirteen,” I retorted, “in case you hadn’t noticed. By the way,
have YOU looked in the mirror lately, Mrs. Shearpen?
You’re not a forty-year-old man any more either!”

“If you walk out of this room, if we never see you again,
I will think about you every day.
I won’t want to, but that’s what will happen.”

“Is there really cake?” I asked.

“Huh,” I said, taking it in. “So how do they switch back? The people who got switched?
Do you bring them together and poof! they’re back to who they were?
Or does the switch wear off after an hour or a day or something?”

It took me longer to recover my wits than I would have preferred. I wasn’t sure which was the more distressing. The fact that Charlene was cheating on Jackson with her friend’s boyfriend. Or the fact that said boyfriend was none other than Danny Morris, the asshole bully from high school.

“What?” I spat, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand to get the taste of Danny out of it. “What the hell?”

“Is that cherry I taste?” he asked playfully, seemingly oblivious to the rage coursing through me. “My favorite.”
