Eventually we awoke again. Veronica still lay beside me with her torso
in my arms but she seemed to be whinnying softly in her sleep. I tried
to move my ear closer to her lips but my efforts awoke her. She stirred
and I gently stroked her long blond hair as I murmured to her.

"Was that Juno whinnying whilst you were asleep?"

"Hold on. I'll ask he,." smiled Vee sleepily.

There was a short pause and then Veronica pressed herself against me
again.

John Martin had turned his successful engineering business over to his kids -- much to their consternation. While camping deep in the national forest, he met a fox hybrid in great need of help.

It was a hot, somewhat dry and dusty late summer day. School was looming, just a few weeks away, and Roni was absolutely bored. In a one theater town, you can only see the same movie so many times before it turns you completely bonkers, and in a town of this size, there just weren't that many activities to do. The theater, waste time at the diners on Main Street, shoot baskets at the school... BORING!

So Roni was just idly wandering around Smoky Corners that particular Thursday morning, trying to figure out what to do.

“Look,” I said, “I know this is a shock to you, and maybe I’m expecting too much for you to get over it in a day or so. God knows it’s taken me several months to get used to the idea of being a girl... But what about if we pause the game, and you just stare at me for as long as it takes for you to get it out of your system? Instead of, you know, glancing at me out of the corner of your eye and then trying to pretend you weren’t looking.”

“I thought I was getting used to the idea of being a girl, but... I guess I wasn’t as used to it as I thought.”

 

“Hmm. You said you’d wanted to be a boy. Why do you care which you are?”

 

“I was a boy before the Divergence. And... I’ve lived as a boy ever since, even though I technically wasn’t. My aunt and uncle and all the kids at school treated me like a boy, and the idea of being a girl is hard to get used to even though I’ve known for a long time that it might happen.”

“It’s too late to back out. Even if I got on a train to Nebraska tomorrow, I’ve still been exposed to enough Raleigh rabbit pheromones that I’m going to go through puberty one way or another.”

Mrs. Carson looked at me, I was sure she could understand how I felt, she had lost someone precious to her in her past and something told me that she was far older then she looked. Her age was still a joke compared to how long my life would be, but she was probably four to five times older than I was. “That's pretty much all that happened until now, nothing too fancy to be worth telling left, I think.”

“Well it is pretty much, and it gave me more than enough information to figure out how to deal with your request of enrolling at Whateley Academy. I would like to put you in Poe Cottage at least too try if you fit in, this has to do with your recent change of genders. I'm sure you are aware we would like to have you as a roommate with another student. Enrolling at Poe Cottage would also make you live near Nikki and her friends which might be not for the worst.”

Since the Turner sisters seemed upset after the meeting followed by Tom Dodge's stern warning, Tom suggested that perhaps it would be better to escort the sisters back to their cabin to allow them to rest and recover before lunch. As he led Elizabeth (followed by his son and Crissie) back to her cabin, he promised that he would be back at 1150 to escort the two sisters to lunch. (In fact, Tom was very much interested in discussing what had happened before and during breakfast).

Tom put his arm around Elizabeth and proceeded to walk her back to her cabin. Elizabeth nestled close and enjoyed the moment. Her sister and Tom's son fell in behind the couple. Blissfully ignorant of the storm clouds gathering around her and her sister, as far as she was concerned all was right in the world.

Tom Dodge quietly entered the hold carrying a lantern in one hand and tools in the other. He set the tools down until he found one of the things he was looking for. Returning to pick up the tools, he returned to the the crate and began to open it wispiring to himself with satisfaction "Now let's find some scripture."

Hailey knocked on the store's door, “Anyone awake in there?” she teased. “7-11 is supposed to always be open you know.”

“Sorry, we don’t serve crabs,” Vanessa said from the other side of the locked door. Ella gave a small twitch of her arm, causing her gauntlet to spark. To her surprise, the crab spread one pincer and gave a little spark right back at her. Then started to wander back to the beach with its friend.

“So everyone here does something huh?”

Hailey looked around at her new hut. At least, they called it a hut. It was really more like a cabin with solid walls and a strong roof. It was small, granted, but they advised her that with the new ready source of wood, she could expect a full upgrade very soon.
