Chapter 53

*Before…

(Sniffle.) “But you didn’t choose me…I just showed up.”

“Can I choose you now?”

They’re staring at each other and she goes from crying to shaking and crying and nodding and then…. “Y..yes…” and she buries her face into daddy’s chest and starts to sob.

I’m crying too…everything he said is the stuff I’ve been talking about and I’m hugging myself until I feel Taylor come up behind me and he wraps me up in his arms and squeezes me tight and I lean back into it with a happy sigh.

“Thanks honey.”

The long dusty road to happiness.

When she had been young she understood how unforgiving this land that gave no second chances really was, yet now she sought one last chance at redemption.

As the wind howled across the broken expanse, rattling the bones of the dead and blasting the already dried out grass, she walked ever onwards through the stinking dust and the heat haze. Her red lips once beautiful to look at, now cracked and parched like the earth that had not seen rain in many decades. The soft skin around her painted nails had blistered from the uncaring assault of the burning earth beneath her feet. Lurching onwards almost like a ghostly mirage in the heat on the dust bowl, her skin burnt from the sun and the wind, from the agony of life around her. She knew she had to push onwards for behind her lay only shame.

This is kind of a one shot Tracy story, but will fit in when I reach October 31st of 1983. I have added some new people, and yes, Tracy will meet them in the coming chapters of Through the years. I have done my best to keep spoilers out, but this post focuses on her feelings in October.

I’m still humming the song as we pull back into the diner and I head inside and slip through the crowd of customers and all the way to Taylor and he’s flipping some stuff from the grill to plates and I let him put them up to the pick up window.

Then I kiss him before he has a chance to put anything new on the grill and I go over and over again leaning into him pressing close and go until some of our regulars at the counter start to hoot and holler.

I wave at them and I keep kissing him for a few more minutes.

Oh yum it is such a good thing to kiss him.

Chapter 28

It’s like out of LOTR when Boromir was talking about the horns of Gondor calling them home. Rampart has that sort of feeling right now a little as this is the place that I’ve spent the most here and there is something that tugs at me as I fly over to the castle section itself and see streets I know and shops I’ve been to while training here.

I bite my lip at some of those kinda sort of home feelings.

I had a few towns like this when I was trucking. Those places you’ve been to so many times that you know them well. It’s actually a good thing y’know.

Home away from home can be good because it’s not home.

Julina’s day does not start well, but then she learns a lot more about the developments in town, and she makes a new friend.
