Six Days

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

I don't know if anyone noticed but the front page now holds only six days worth of stories instead of seven. Since multi-chapter stories are allowed only one entry in the upper part of the page and the lower ten or so spots are taken up by blogs, this means that in six days there are about 40 different stories going on at BCTS. Whew!

How Novel Is It?

Audience Rating:

What with everything in my life right now, there's no way I could take time to administer voting on the novel contest in a timely manner, therefore I'm extending the deadline to 11:59 p.m. PST, January 6, 2008 in the hope that things will be calmer and more predictable for me by then. Remember, I'm doing this for my convenience, not yours. :)

SecondShelf Test Site

Author:

Audience Rating:

Bob Arnold has prepared a test site for making sure that BC will run without problems on a new server with updated infrastructure software (LAMP). Please, take a look, read a few stories there and help us test it. You can't create new accounts there and only editors can post new material because new posts at SecondShelf will all go away when we re-install it later in the week. If you find problems, come back here to TopShelf and PM me or Bob. :)

It Happened on a Midnight Clear - BigCloset Christmas Eve Non-Contest/Challenge to Authors

This is not a contest! Because I don't have the time to run another contest just now. But it is a challenge to authors to write a short story or novelette on a Christmas Eve theme between now and the 12th day of Christmas +1. That's Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 11:59 pm PST -- A deadline that is as firm as the artificial spray-on snow baked onto those old-style lights you've got up in the attic. :)

Cold Mutations

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

My cold has mutated into bronchitis, combined with my chronic sinusitis and now I'm having asthma attacks. I've got medication for this so I'll be okay, just miserable and a little short-tempered for a bit--one of the asthma meds is a steroid.

I've spent most of my time since Saturday in bed while Mom's situation has moved only to stable. Still no prognosis for when she might get out of ICU.

Four days with a cold that's not getting better

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

I'm subject to COPD so I've got orders from my doctor to come in with a bad cold for prophylaxis against opportunistic bronchitis. So I'm going to the doctor today myself.

My mom is not stable with her breathing problems so they are concentrating on getting her stable so they can do more tests. My brother is working at home today so he can be on the phones and catch a plane if needed.

Heavy Traffic

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Lots of visitors lately, so that's why the front page sometimes changes to a simpler layout; it's a way of getting a little more speed for those on dial-up when the site is busy. Interestingly, it's not so much that more people are visiting lately as, although that's up, too, but the larger part of the traffic increase is due to more people looking at more pages each visit.

Dig-Dugged?

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

I think we just went through a massive storm of people accessing the site, for about half an hour we had huge numbers of visitors. Perhaps it was a misbehaving crawler or something the site went down twice in half an hour. If it was a crawler, whoever owns it must have fixed the problem. Hope, hope. :)

Happy Thanksgiving

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

I realize that it's only a USA holiday but Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Canada and Mexico had their Thanksgivings earlier but this is the big US family feast day, in some ways, bigger than Christmas which is so much about shopping now that people forget to be happy to have what they've got.

Diagnosis: Limerick

With the doctor jokes around now, this little limerick came to mind:

When she got arrested for leading a riot
Her friends said, "We don't understand, she's so quiet."
Still it's not hard to figure
Her radical new vigor
Since she started her gunpowder diet!

Hijackers

A hijack attempt apparently took the Classic BC server (Classic BC, Tuckerspawn, Original BC, Eros Calendar, NaughtyWords, BeastlyThoughts, Ms. Midnite, Qnez mail server, et al.) down sometime this morning. A simple reboot seems to have fixed things with no real damage.

Important! Crystal's Storysite Servers Outage

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Here's the note from Kim at Crystal's:

Tomorrow (Sunday, Oct 7) morning the servers will be going down at around 11:AM EDT. We'll try to have things up and operating normally as soon as possible. When they come up, the IP addresses will be different, so there might be a delay as the new DNS propagates.

Record Traffic & Finance report

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Monday, Sep 3, 2007 set a traffic record at BigCloset, well over 4300 visitors in 24 hours, more than 5% over the previous record set in July and nearly equaled in August of just under 4100. In fact, the average daily traffic for the last week is 3999, the highest weekly average ever also. :)

Submissions are also up and comments and sales through Doppler Press and activity on the ads at BC, it's all good. :)

Repost to Stardust at http://www.stardustr.us !!

The commenting proportion is similar to BC, there's a lot of overlapping readership so some of your old fans are bound to be reminded of an old favorite and Bob Arnold is just a nice host!

Note the posting restrictions at the top of the Stardust main page, they're different than BCs. :)

Hugs,
Erin

Thankful for Bob

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Just a note here on a rainy Sunday to say how much I am thankful for Bob Arnold's help in keeping the technical details of running multiple servers and websites straight. If I'm stumped or confused, I can always ask Bob and if he doesn't know, he knows where to find out. Yay, Bob!

Check out his website at http://StarDustR.us

And thanks again,
Erin

I wouldn't have thought it necessary to say this

Author:

Audience Rating:

No posting of insults couched as pseudo-psychoanalytic jargon while logged-in as Guest Reader and certainly no logging back in as oneself to jump on such a bandwagon with eager enjoyment in the pretense of being someone else!

And especially not attached to someone's story but this egregious behavior is OBVIOUSLY forbidden even in blogs or forums! Personal attacks are not allowed and malicious sock-puppetry will get you banned quicker than you can say "database records of access by ip address"!

I don't want anyone to get the idea that I don't want to see lots of comments after the recent blowups. We go along for months with lots of good comments then one of these brushfires breaks out and fo a while it seems people are afraid to comment.

Nightly Shutdown

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

In an effort to prevent future database corruption, TopShelf will shut down each night at 12.59 A.M. to 1:20 A.M. Pacific Time for database maintenance. This is the very middle of the slowest time of the night so it shouldn't affect too many people too badly. People in Far Eastern timezones may be inconvenienced, a bit, sorry.

This is in additon to the 5 minute shut down at 3 AM Pacific for server maintenance.

New Server

Author:

I just rented a new server and in order to get the best price I could, I paid for a year upfront. That's $2126, quite a hit on my credit card, about $190/month, amortized with interest. Next year it will drop to $1776, equal to about $148/month and I intend to pay cash.

First, anonymous comments have been turned back on but with a spam filter now. This also means that if anyone accidentally posts the exact same comment twice, it will be marked as spam and not appear until I can look at it. You'll get a heads-up notice on screen and I'll get an email to take a look if this happens. Also, comments that contain a LOT of URLs will be marked as spam until I look at them.
