Time for another contest?

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Contest are fun and seem to increase involvement in the site. So I'm thinking of a contest to run from April 1 to May 5. Since there are several important calendar dates in that range, including April Fool's Day, Passover, Easter, IRS Day, May Day and Cinco de Mayo, I'm thinking of offering a choice of themes for contest entries, like these:

Hatbox Access Page

Author:

Audience Rating:

This is the signup page for the HatBox, BigCloset's premium pages where stories contributed by authors can be viewed or downloaded by people who have joined the Hatbox. After one year in the Hatbox, contributed stories are made available elsewhere, either on BC or on the donors' own websites. Downloads are made available on the honor system, please do not distribute these files privately as that would be a violation of the copyright of the author. Please do not share your login or password with others.

If you have already signed up to the HatBox the link is: The HatBox. You will need your Hatbox user id and password (different from your BigCloset id and password) to access the HatBox stories.

If you want to contribute a story to the HatBox, send me a private message.

If you need a refund, send me an email at [email protected].

Enjoy and thanks,
Joyce

Voting for the Short Story Month February 2012 Contest is over. I debated leaving the voting open another day to see if we could get 150 voters but we need 20 more and we did not get 20 voters on the last day of voting and I don't think we would get 20 more with one more day. So there are only five prizes instead of six.

Here are the results of the voting.

130 voters cast their ballots and the top five stories all won $29 for their writers:

Girl Detective Redux - A Beginning by Roberta J Cabot
9% (48 votes)

What The Hell! by Susan Brown
6% (31 votes)

Chemical Ali by Melanie Brown
6% (29 votes)

Lady of the Lake by Maggie Finson
5% (28 votes)

Luck be a Lady by Maeryn
5% (28 votes)

How do I "bookmark" or "favorite" something and how do I undo them?

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

At the bottom of each story there are links to "Add to favorites" or "++Bookmark". "++" means "add". Click a link to add to either list.

Bookmarks and Favorites are two different things. Favorites show up on your My Account page, and there's a tab there to bring up your Bookmarks.

20,000,000 visitors and counting

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Sometime between 11a.m. and noon, PST, this morning, we hit 20,000,000 visitors on the site counter. Since that only goes back to June 15, 2005, we really had probably a million visitors in the six years before that. At the current rate of visitors coming to the site, we'll hit another 20 million in about three years. :)

BigCloset Search and Taxonomy Interception

First off, I'm going to start this posting with a description of how Drupal works traditionally and how BigCloset works now. Some of this information is a copy and paste of a Comment I made on a blog.

Traditionally everything in Drupal is stored in a MySQL or similar database.

Writing for Fun

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Writing here is for amateurs, amateurs in the original sense of people who do what they do for the love of doing it. If you're not happy about how long chapters are or how often they are posted, be polite and kind because if you simply make demands you might as well kick the authors and tell them to stop having fun.

Please Understand

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Doing the administration here is not easy, keeping things friendly and focussed on stories, storytelling, reading and commenting on stories. Maybe I should do away with the blogs.

Twice today I have had to remove comments for being unfriendly, both times because some reported news event and someone's fairly innocuous comment sparked replies that got political and maybe a bit unfriendly. Whenever this happens, it has nothing to do with my own politics, sometimes I have to remove posts that I agree with because not doing so eventually leads to flames, in my experience.

Surfer High

Had another of my patentable weird dreams. This one was about a fictional high school in Malibu known by the nickname of Surfer High. In the dream, I was pitching this as a cable TV show.

One of the exec types says, "I like what you've done there, with the double meaning in the title. It's not a double entendre unless it's dirty, right?"

Complaint vs Criticism

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

If your main comment about a story is that you don't like the genre, theme, premise or morals of the characters, then you don't have a comment, you have a complaint.

It's not criticism, it's simple whining that someone did not write a particular story to fit your requirements. Get over it and go read something else.

Genre Baiting

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Genre-based attacks on stories posted as comments are not allowed. I'm tired of this unfriendly behavior. Multiple and repeated attacks of this sort MAY NOT get further warnings and MAY result in banning from the site.

If you don't like the genre of the story you are reading, exercise the muscle between your ears and stop reading it! You don't have to tell anyone publicly about it either.

If you like BC as a place to come and read the kind of stories you like, allow other people the same dignity and respect you would like to have.

Hugs to all,
Erin

It's down to 55F in the daytime and water falls from the sky every half-hour or so. Some locals think this may be the last days but I've seen this before, it gets worse before it gets better. I think we'll survive. :)

There will be no commenting allowed on this post, I just need to say this.

There's a bill in the legislature here in California that would extend the same protections and presence in educational curricula to sexual orientation and gender variation that are allowed and mandated for religious affiliation, ethnic origin and sex.

Crises!

The secondary BC server, the one that handles almost all of my sites except BC and handles my mail, is under attack by spam emailers from the Ukraine. I'm trying to get a handle on the problem. I'm going to be busy with this, so if the site is neglected today, that's why.

Also, has anyone heard from Piper? Last I heard from her was early Tuesday morning. She was on the road with the truck full of servers from Bob's place and had stopped at a motel. Nothing since then and I can't reach her cellphone either.

Erin

We're working on the servers at Bob's place today so Stardust and other sites on Bob's servers may experience some outages. Like right now. :)

Things should be back up soon, the spaghetti monster behind the servers is making things difficult.

Dogs, Balloons, and Birthday Fairies

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

My dentist gave me a balloon for my birthday (Friday) and the dog thinks it's an evil fairy out to get her. :) She stands at the end of the main hall barking at it where I trapped it in the back hall. Except it just now escaped and yes, headed immediately for a fan. I only just saved it and nearly tripped over the dog who was running along looking up at it. It's now corralled in the kitchen with its string tied to a cast iron frying pan.

It came tied to a bag of cookies but we managed to free the cookies earlier. Mmm. Chocolate chip raisin. :)

Erin

Plans right now are that Piper and I will combine our business interests into a company to be called QnEZ, LLC. I will provide capital and Piper will provide contacts and expertise to operate CyberBrats Hosting as a division of QnEZ. Doppler Press publishing and BigLittleUs marketing will be other divisions, most likely. (QnEZ is a name I own with a non-registered trademark.)

Purchase of servers and progress on rescue plan

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Just spent $2300 for purchase of four servers to be new homes for BigCloset, Stardust, Fictioneer, Sapphire's Place, TGFiction.net, TG LIbrary, Tuckerspawn, Storysite and at least a dozen more sites. These servers will be the new homes for the next few years of these sites and will also be a lilypad for as many of Bob's sites as we can get moved before Lani has to shut down Bob's internet accounts.

We're trying to get things so we can make copies for everyone that needs them so we will probably have to keep Bob's servers running for another three weeks or so. It looks doable.

More later.

I'm off to the San Diego Comic Con! I'll have my laptop and phone along so I won't be out of touch but things won't get looked at ten or twelve times a day, more like just two or three. :) Have fun and if you're there, I can often be found hanging around Scott Shaw!s table or in one of Mark Evanier's panel shows.

I've got some ideas for names for the NPO/Corp we've been talking about. Two of them are names I already have domains registered for:

BigLittle.Us

and

StarStuffR.Us

I think either would be appropriate. Do people have preferences? Other suggestions?

A non-profit proposal

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Here's a thought we've been kicking around behind the scenes amongst the site managers. Our very own webhosting and publishing company organized as a non-profit corporation (NPC).

There are advantages.

Many of the sites could be hosted for less than people are paying now with possible improvements in service. Publishing contracts for books could be written that did not depend on just goodwill between author and publisher. Donations to an NPC can be tax deductible. An NPC can own things that will survive the death or disappearance of actual human beings.

Bob Arnold died and his family evidently turned the servers off. Some of the sites above were hosted on his machines and some just had their DNS (net pointer system) hosted there.

The DNS problems will be sorted in a day or so, the site outages will probably take a bit longer.

See other blogs and announcements here for news and to read about Bob Arnold and what he did for the community.

Is it appropriate to discuss the tags on a story in comments?

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

No, it is not. Such discussion should take place in PMs or perhaps in a forum topic like this one.

Think about it. The comments are supposed to stay with a story. Discussing the tags puts the author in the position of either agreeing with the commenter and changing the tags, in which case the comment is rendered meaningless or disagreeing with the commenter in which case the comment thread becomes tangential to the story as the author defends their position. Either way, it can't help to detract from the value of the story as a story.
