HatBox Gateway Page

Author:

Audience Rating:

Publication:

Genre:

This is a gateway page for the HatBox, BigCloset's premium pages where stories given by authors can be viewed or downloaded by people who have contributed money to the maintenance of BigCloset. After one year in the Hatbox, contributed stories are made available elsewhere, either on BC or on the donors' own websites. Downloads are made available on the honor system, please do not distribute these files privately as that would be a violation of the copyright of the author.

If you want to go directly to the HatBox the link is: The HatBox. You will need your Hatbox user id and password (different from your BigCloset id and password) to access the HatBox stories.

If you want to join the HatBox, the link is: HatBox Membership. This is the same as the link with the kitty in the right column.

After the |Read More| is a list of the stories currently in the HatBox with links to the pages there offering the stories in various download formats.

Fanfiction and Copyrights

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

When writing fanfiction, like the current Comics Retcon Universe stuff, it's polite and considerate to acknowledge the current copyright and/or trademark holders, when known. Especially if using artwork or logos.

Just a line near the top or bottom of a story, or on the Title page is enough. And it isn't required here, it's just a nice thing to do for the original owners of the stuff.

PayPal Problem

Someone raided my PayPal account for $400. Paypal was suspicious so they flagged the transaction but NOT before charging my credit card. I contacted the seller and they have agreed to refund the charges so it will get resolved. Meanwhile I have to wonder who the heck got into my PayPal account and charged $400 against a social networking sites internal accounts.

Thunder and Lightning

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

I may not be on much today, there's thunderstorms and flashfloods predicted for this area from now till the early morning. We're pretty safe from flashfloods, there are arroyos either side of me to channel the rainwater away but lightning, winds or floods may take out the power. I'll be staying off line, mostly, till this blows over, using my laptop or phone to access the site.

Rude and unfriendly comments as 'Visitor"

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Here's a lesson in how the internet works. When you make a comment, even an anonymous comment, on a board like this, it leaves behind a trace. That trace contains, at minimum, your IP address at the time of the hookup. It works this way because it must since actually sending a comment is not instantaneous, your computer and my server have to know where each other are so they can communicate until the transaction is done.

Kudos Should Be Working

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

The kudos thingie seems to be working, but not perfectly. Anyhoo, you can now give kudos to stories, down at the bottom just under the bookmark buttons. And you can see how many kudos a story has, if it has any, up at the top in the right hand sidebar. We'll let this work for a few days and see how it goes.

PDF format in stories

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

I have been reading and enjoying the stories on this site for a little over 2 months now. I have been saving the PDF formats to a stick drive to read at work since this site is blocked and it is the only time I have to read them. Now when I come back from vacation, there is no more PDF available. What is the reason for this? I am disappointed.

Anonymous Attack "Reviews" Are Not Tolerated

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Attack "reviews" in the style common on another TG site are not tolerated here. Whingeing that something was not worth reading is not criticism, it's just ego. Doing so anonymously will get the whinger banned from BC.

If one of your stories gets review-bombed, don't answer the reviewer just PM me.

Hugs to all,
Erin

Complaints About Genres, or Themes and Elements in Content

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

There have been a number of complaints recently about Genre and Content. The complaints are always of the form, "There's too much _________ here, I can't find anything to read." With sometimes nastier comments included, attacking whatever the person doesn't like as being poorly written or worthless in general.

This will stop.

I'm taking a harder stance on this because I'm getting tired of removing such blogs and comments as violations of the Terms of Service.

The TOS here is really simple, it's in the motto at the top of the front page, "A friendly place..."

Organizer pages now have an Ongoing/Complete tag

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

This is in place of the Series/Solo tag that other types of story post have. The default is Ongoing.

For author pages, if you're still writing then Ongoing is correct. :) Complete would be that you don't intend to post more stories.

For title, section and series pages, Ongoing means the final chapter has not been posted and complete means that it has. A section can be complete while the overall title is not. Or a title can be complete while the series is not.

Friendly Means Friendly

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

It means treat everyone like a friend. If you don't feel you can make a public post that says what you want to say without being unfriendly, then don't make the post public. Friends talk over problems in private.

Let me clarify something else

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Don't bring an attack on a BC author from another site over here and expect to be allowed to rant on my time. And especially don't do it as visitor. This will get your IP address banned from the site and just did, so you ain't the one seeing this unless you login using a different computer. There can't be a clearer signal that one intends to act as a troll.

No trolls allowed except as characters in stories. This meant you, but you don't know it, trollass.

Hugs to everyone else,
Erin

I'm back!

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

The Comic-Con was great but after six hours there, I started having back pains from all the walking, so I took some time to take pain pills, relax and then I drove home. People really liked the Quillian color pages I handed out to a few friends and pros and I touched base with almost everyone I know in the industry. I even got a half-hour to talk to Bob Burden! (Flaming Carrot, Mystery Men).

BANNED!

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

One person did not believe me that I would take action. They have been banned for forging someone else's name on a post. This is more egregious than simply making snarky comments. I'm debating as to whether the ban is permanent.

I'm very sorry that it came to this.

Nothing has been deleted or unpubbed: A policy statement of sorts

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

The posts this morning about Stan and the comments on those posts have been moved off of the front page but they were not deleted nor unpubbed. They can be found by anyone who looks for them but I'd prefer that the matter be dropped since it seems to have blown out with a few appropriate apologies.

I'm actually impressed that such a hot topic came up and got openly discussed and no one lost their temper.

Daniel pulled an intercostal muscle (between the ribs) or something and he's kind of in pain which sapped his energy for doing art. Instead, we put up another page from his sketchbook, some of the more minor characters from Sam Valentine.

We should have a page up on Monday.

Ten Million Visitors

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

About 430 PM PDT we hit 10,000,000 visitors here on BCTS. It took us almost exactly 4 years and 11 months to do that. Other versions of BigCloset, before and during the time of TopShelf, have clocked about 1 million additional visits.

Congratulations are in order, I suppose, if for nothing else than that we survived. :)

Hugs to all,

New, PDF generation

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Bob has added a new capability to BC. Near the bottom of each story, in the mass of links down there, you should find one labelled, |PDF Version|

This will produce a PDF file saved on your hard drive of most of the stories on BC. Some stories with poor or wrong HTML will not be properly converted, but if you need a PDF version for some reason, this may be handy.

Thanks, Bob.

Erin

Back on Main Server

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Update - Apr 7 4:51 PM PDT - The site is back, in most of it's glory. The problem turned out to be the voting module not being compatible with the latest release of the database software. So, no voting on stories until I figure out a replacement module or they update their code. And no reporting on old votes, either. Sorry.

Most everything else has been turned back on (or will be) except: reporting comments to moderator (flag for administrator) - that module conflicted with the one that makes Random 5olos possible so it had to be taken up into the mountains and sacrificed to an angry god, sorry. Also, the little clock at the top of the right column that showed what time the server thought it was had a problem when the updates to the search index was run, don't ask me how but the clock interfered and until someone writes better code than my own jackleg module (I wrote that one) we'll have to do without the clock. Isaac says hi.

Many thanks to Bob who did the major work on this debug. We should buy him a bag of chocolate or something, he likes chocolate. :)

Hugs,
- Erin

Interesting

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

While 80 stories were posted during the last week here on BCTS, another 94 older stories were edited and reposted by the authors or one of our volunteer editors or commented one by some reader. Now in some cases, that was just us opening up the story to file it into one of the new author pages but still, I don't think any other TG fiction site has so much activity going on with older stories. :)

There's a new feature here at BC, at the end of all stories entered as Fiction or Wysiwyg that are rated General or Mature, there are a row of buttons for passing a link to that story on to various social media sites. It's been there since Monday. :)

I don't know if anyone has used it yet but no one has commented on it, so I thought I ought to blog about it to draw some attention.

Tell me what you think.

If you want to post a story Without the Social Media Buttons, rate it Restricted or higher or use the Story input type instead of Fiction.

How to use the Author Menu - Multiple Authors

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

For most input types, choosing an author for the piece is done on a scrolling menu. It's very easy to pick an author, just select the menu, type a few letters of the author's name and it will jump to the alphabetic neighborhood of the author where one can scroll up or down until the proper author is highlighted. Clicking off the menu then will leave that author as the selected one.

Dick Francis, British Mystery Champion Dies

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Dick Francis, author of dozens of popular mystery novels has died. He was 89. Most of his stories were set in the world of racing, where he had once been a champion jockey.

I have on the table beside my computer, two Dick Francis novels I found in a used bookstore that I have never read. His latest book, co-cuthored by his son, Felix, (I think it is called Silks), I also have not read. I may have missed a few more, here and there over the years but will doubless find, read and enjoy them as I have all of his work.

How to draw a line in a story

Forums:

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Do NOT draw a line using massive repeats of characters because this will make your display too wide for some viewers.

The easy way to draw a line to separate parts of a post is with the HR tag: <hr />

You can include parameters inside the tag like: <hr align="center" width="50%" />

The above will create a line that is centered and half as wide as as the display area.

Moralizing in comments

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

There's been a rash lately of people moralizing about other people's stories. If a story offends you morally, you're probably not the target audience. It's probably a fantasy story based on a concept that makes no sense to you. Getting on a moral high horse about it makes you look prejudiced and clueless. Better to just say the story did not appeal to you if you comment at all.

Happy Christmas

Tomorrow is Christmas, the day in which a large portion of Christianity has chosen to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth more than 2000 years ago, despite the fact that from the best evidence, He was likely born in early March. :) But it is a celebration, not an anniversary, and the date was chosen to coincide with other celebrations of renewal and new hope.
