Starstruck! -5- Turn It Up to Eleven

Starstruck!

by Erin Halfelven

Dan'l Broome did not get much done the day he found Vicki Starr sleeping in the pallet yard next to his shop. First there was getting acquainted and picking out splinters. Then there was finding something for her to wear. Then there was dealing with the fact that she wouldn't tell him where she lived.

"I don't remember," she said, her violet eyes large and innocent. "I don't know how I got here either or what happened to my clothes." She smiled up at him. "Must have been some party, huh?"

The Pregnant Boy -5- Explanation

Justin got up early on Monday morning and took Tom for a walk.

The big dog had been thoroughly trained to heel, come and stay or walking him anywhere with a leash would be more like one of those old Western movies where someone gets a foot stuck in a stirrup and is dragged all over the prairie. Two blocks from home, Tom sighted a cat.

Reality TV -5- Real Wednesday

"Just Wren," said Andy.

The director, Martin Wohlers, rolled his eyes but grinned at the same time.

Davis Jordan Bloom, the producer's representative, asked, "You want your credits to just read 'Wren'?"

"That's right," said Andy. "That's going to be my professional name."

The Pregnant Boy -4- Recreation

The rest of Sunday passed without much happening. In mid-afternoon, Harold, Justin and Tom had a barbecue in the backyard. Harold had taken coarse-ground, lean burger meat and mixed it with onion soup mix and Worcestershire sauce. One burger had no mix-in, just for Tom, who shouldn't have onions or salt in his diet.

Justin cut up lettuce, spinach and tomatoes for a salad, served with a dressing made of olive oil and garlic-flavored vinegar. The buns were quickly toasted on the fire, too, then slathered with mayo, mustard and ketchup. A handful of potato chips each and a serving of iced tea made a very satisfying meal with cookies for dessert. Tom even got part of one cookie since they were oatmeal with no raisins or chocolate.

The Pregnant Boy -3- Repentance

On Sunday morning, Justin got up stealthily and tried to conceal his vomiting from his father. It didn't work, the simple layout of the house defeated him; the only bathroom was in between his bedroom and his father's.

"Are you okay, son?" Harold Bock asked.

"Yeah, Dad, I'll live." The nausea had seized him as he lay awake in his bed wondering if he would ever talk to Zoe again, talk to her alone. He'd probably see her at school, though she was a senior and he a sophmore. Their schedules would not naturally intersect that often.

The Pregnant Boy -1- Porcelain

When Justin Bock rolled out of bed on the first day of the three day Labor Day weekend, he felt queasy. Trying not to think about it, he dodged around the white fluffy mound of Tom, the Great Pyrenees dog sleeping in the hallway, and barely made it to the bathroom in time.

“Blort,” he said into the toilet bowl, throwing up a mouthful of vile tasting liquid.

Reality TV -1- Real Coffee

Andy Wren shook his head. Had he heard the guy right? "You want me to do what to be on your show?"

The guy sighed. "Look it's called Reality TV, and that's not just the genre, it's the title and the whole schtick. A houseful of people who will all go about their normal lives for a whole year while crossdressing."

Smarter than the average pic-a-nic...

We had a great time at the picnic on Saturday and Beth and I had an adventure in San Francisco Sunday complete with phantom elevators and aggressive potholes, I'm sure it will all end up in a story by one or the other of us. :)

Thanks again to everyone who showed up and made Saturday such a lovely day. And thanks to Beth for the good company on the trip.

And thanks to Piper and Bob and everyone else who kept watch on the site while I was gone. Piper had to do a bit of rescue Sunday night while Beth and I were out with my brother and his wife for dinner. Thanks!

Strangewise -1- A Dream of Winter

A Dream of Winter

by Erin Halfelven

The aisles of the warehouse store wound around like a worm committing self-abuse. High up on one shelf sat a fifty-five gallon drum. All frosty white and silver on a midnight blue and black background, letters spelled out "Winter" like that was the name of a new energy drink.

"Why would anyone want a can of Winter that big?" asked little Jodie.

Server load is nominal and the number of visitors is almost back to normal. :) We'll keep an eye on things and make sure it's all okay but when the DNS has finished propagating in 24 to 48 hours, all should be copacetic. Starting Monday, we have a few more changes to make, like bringing the old site back up as SecondShelf etc.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hugs,
