“God! It’s so nice to be home.” Fey walks into the apartment she shared with Jessica.
She knew Jessica was at work and wouldn’t be home for several hours, so she texted her to let her know she was returning home today. Dave met up with his boyfriend, and they were going out to dinner. Sammy was enjoying her new body and surprised her roommate.
Fey empties her luggage and puts away all her clean clothes. She makes sure they are folded neatly and hung up properly. Once all her clothes, shoes, and nickknacks are put away, she walks into the kitchen and checks to see what Jessica has in the refrigerator.
When she opened it, she noticed that Jessica hadn’t done any real shopping. She had bought a lot of fast, quick meals that could be heated up quickly.
“Looks like I’m going to the grocery store.” Fey grabs her car keys and walks downstairs to her car.
The drive to the store didn’t take her long. Fey pulled into the parking lot and parked. She got out of her car and walked into the store. She had some ideas about what she wanted to buy and headed towards the aisles to get them.
While walking around the store, Fey picks out items she wants to buy. She spots a young woman pushing a shopping cart with a little boy in front of her. The woman had shoulder-length blonde hair with red streaks and wore dark sunglasses inside the building. Her fingernails were painted blood red but weren’t godly or gothic.
She also felt some weird energy coming from her. Fey couldn’t focus on her feelings, but the energy felt cold, like an arctic breeze that chilled you to the bones. As for the little boy, he felt normal. There wasn’t anything special about him, but she could see a silver cord connecting him to the woman.
Fey is surprised when the woman turns around to look at her. The woman lowers the sunglasses she is wearing, and a sweet smile appears on her pale face as she looks at Fey.
Fey walks up to her. “Who are you?”
“I’m Hokee Axson. The question is, who are you?” Hokee looks at the young woman standing near her.
“I’m Fey Nightwatcher. Who is this cutey?” Fey looks at the cute little boy sitting in the shopping cart.
“This little devil is my son Simon.” A smile appears on Hokee’s pale face when she mentions her son’s name.
Fey noticed how proud she was of her son. She could see it on Hokee’s face.
“How old is Simon?” Fey was looking at the little boy.
“He’s five years old.” Hokee was surprised when she discovered she was pregnant with him.
The reason was that she wasn’t purely human. She was a grim reaper, and grim reapers were considered dead. In her case, she became a grim reaper from drinking her mother’s breast milk when she was just a newborn.
Ever since then, she has followed in her mother’s footsteps, reaping people’s souls. That was until she met Rube while on a job. He was a normal human who owned a construction company. The person she had been sent to reap worked for him.
After she took the person's soul, she and Rube started dating. A year later, their son was born. She was surprised, and so were her father and mother. Her son was spoiled by her parents and brother.
Fey leans closer to Hokee. “If you don’t mind me asking, what are you?”
A smirk appears on Hokee’s face. “I’m complicated.”
“Okay, that could mean a lot of different things.” Fey could feel the coldness coming off of Hokee.
“Let’s walk while I explain.” Hokee starts walking while casting a spell that prevents others from listening to them talk.
Fey follows Hokee as she continues her shopping. She was curious about this woman. As for the little boy, she wasn’t picking up anything unusual about him.
“I’m what you call a grim reaper. It’s my job to escort the souls of the people whose time has expired. I’m also the adopted daughter of a powerful Werewolf as well. My adopted mother is a grim reaper as well.”
“Wait a minute. Are you saying there is more than one Grim Reaper? I always thought there was just one.”
“Yes, there is more than one grim reaper. One grim reaper can’t harvest or escort all those who have died. Not all of us escort human beings.
Some of us harvest the souls of animals. We each have a special department in which we work.”
“Which department do you work in?” Fey couldn’t wait to tell Dave or Nike, who she had met today.
“I’ve been assigned to the department of Supernatural creatures and magical beings like yourself.” Hokee looks at Fey when she says that.
“You could tell I was supernatural?” Fey was surprised.
“I felt you the minute you walked into the store. I’m not here to harvest your soul. It’s my day off and not your time yet.”
“You can tell when someone is going to die?” Fey wonders when her time will come.
“Yes, because of the gift I inherited from my mother. You will have a long and fruitful life.” A playful smile appears on Hokee’s face when she says that.
“So, you know who I will meet and spend my life with?” Fey wonders if Hokee could.
“Only Cupid and fate know that information. I can tell you how long you will live.”
“Okay.” Fey was learning a lot from Hokee.
The two of them continue to talk and shop. By the time they were checking out. Fey and Hokee had exchanged information and promised to keep
in touch with one another.
