The Ice Saints

The Ice Saints (Die Eisheiligen in German) are saints named for 4th and 5th century martyrs and so on.

This year the Ice Saints' Days start today, according to German-speaking countries. Other countries modify the 'rule'!

This year:

11th May - Mamertus
12th May - Servatius
13th May - Pankratius
14th May - Bonifatius
15th May - Kalte Sophia

Why is this important?
Well, according to farmer's observations over hundreds of years, these days are the last fling of winter, after which no more frosts and no more snow.

Anmarian Information and a cry for Help

Hi everyone,

phew!

We now have a third author contributing to the Anmarian world.

What with writing the next Julina episodes, proofreading for other authors, writing the last Chivan episode, and bouncing ideas off poor beleaguered Penny, I am slowly beginning to drown in the whole thing.

My index thingy ( http://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/fiction/48235/julina-blackston... ) is getting to be a small monster now.

Suggestions please

For the first time in ten years, when we were in Australia and New Zealand, Di and I are going away for a holiday that is more than a long weekend.

We shall fly to Lanzarote on Friday and have 10 days there.
The flight is 4+ hours each way, so I am looking for recommendations please for 'books' I can download to my Kindle.

I have loaded up all the 'Sussex Border' stories, but, allowing my stupid side to take over, I have now read them all!

Audience survey - Julina of Blackstone

Hi all,

I have a question almost of 'site etiquette' I guess.

Julina ..., Book 1, is complete. It ended after chapter 40.

I have the next three episodes written, and more underway. The timeline prevents them being released quite yet.

Here is my B I G question:

Now when I do start in on Book 2, do I start 'chapter' numbers back at 001, or do I continue from where we left off, and start at 041?
If I do the former, then I can leave it as Book1, Book 2 etc, but if I choose the latter, then it would have to be 'Volume1', 'Volume2' etc.

A New Year's Present to all Anmarian fans

Hi all,

I have just updated the complete Index thingy to Penny's "Somewhere Else Entirely" to include direct links to each chapter that has been posted in the entire collection of stories. Yes all 116 of the main story, 6 of the Armsman of Joth, and my 41 supporting tales. That's 163 links I have built in.

Have a good year, the Year 1175 since the Great Flood - and also the Year 2015.

All the best,

Julia

As the year draws to an end, I find it time for a little ....

... reflection on the year's events.
I realise with a shock that I have been "Julina"ing for well over a year, and I have been heavily involved in other aspects of Anmarian life. Sometimes I feel that I live on Anmar and not on Earth! I almost find myself using "I deem" in everyday language.

Being sucked into a black hole

So there I was, trying to decide what to do about xyz, when it suddenly occurred that I hadn't actually done a full system backup for a good few months, having been dashing off Julina stories and the like.
So I thought, on Saturday afternoon, I would just invest the few hours it would take, and instigated a full backup.

This was a mistake.

Several problems raised their 'pretty' heads.

Just a little heads-up

As far as Anmar is concerned, then I am delaying posting the next episodes of JoB (#38, #39 and #40 are already completely written and #41 is well under way).
AO #2 is also ready.

However, as each, in their ways, refer to the main story, I like to pass them all through Penny's scrutiny before posting, in case Penny feels I have misjudged some Alaesianisms or Palarandisms. This, of course, then delays poor Penny from getting on with her own stuff.

Oh dear - what is a 'shutter'?

Hi all,

I came across a misapplied word in a passage a month or two ago.

As far as I was concerned, a shutter is something you use to pull across a window to either block the light (to a certain extent) or the wind, when it's stormy. Or both.
I supposed that it could be someone employed to go around shutting things.
I know that cameras have shutters.

In this last week, I have now seen the same misapplied word no less than eight times.

"I don't know how long I lay on that cold and dirty tiled floor, shuttering."

Full functionality restored

Since the upgrade, up to now, I have been able to post neither comments nor blogs.

I blogged about that earlier, when I went on a different machine in a different location, with a different Operating System and a different browser. After trying on nine diiffering combinations of OS and browsers on my own machine.

From that earlier blog, I received a couple of comments and also several messages.

I got angry with the content of some of those messages.

It's not all roses .....

Excuse me for not joining in with the paeans of praise.

Since the 'upgrade' I have been unable to post comments. Nor can I post blogs.

It all works on the computer at work, but not here on my laptop - where it all worked fine last week.

This is for me a retrograde step.

I cannot believe that I am the only one with this configuration of hard-, soft- and vapour-ware.

Back home - and the world as we know it ends .....

So I got back home, after days of traffic jams (bloody C Y C L I S T S - we even got caught up in the tangled web of closed and opened streets due to the end of the Tour of Britain !!!!) and getting a virus on the computer from a CD of photos that some a..h... had given my elderly recently-widowed aunt, and I unpacked all the goodies into the fridge (British sausage, bacon, and just a hint or two of individual pork pies, along with some Cheddar!!!!).

All well and good, and all the comforts of home, and a reasonable night's sleep for a change.

Just got set up in England on my laptop, and suddenly all hell breaks loose.

Seems some iPhone pictures were downloaded to a DVD that has infected my computer now.
