Birds Of A Feather Part 5

Friday Afternoon:
“I hurt in places I never knew I had.” Jennifer slowly removes her training suit.

Pat had informed them why they were wearing those suits. She carries it over to the dirty clothes hamper in the locker room and put everything she wore into it.

“I’m just happy Pat has given us the weekend off.” Cortney drops all her clothes into the hamper.

“Me too. I don’t think I’ll be able to move tomorrow.” Kara drops her stuff into the hamper.

“What is everyone going to do this weekend?” Jessie drops her stuff into the hamper.

“I am going to spend the weekend with Lt. Roger Bronze.” Cortney looks at her friends.

“Who is he and how did you meet him?” Kara and Jessie were curious.

“He’s one of the Vector pilots and I meet him in the cafeteria.” Cortney had gone there to get some dinner after Pat’s training.

“Let me guess, it was the guy I saw you talking to, two days ago.” Jennifer had gone to the cafeteria to grab some dinner as well that day.

“Yeah, we’re going out to Plaza Texaco for dinner tonight.” Cortney researched the restaurant during their break.

“Does my mom know?” Stephanie looks at Cortney as she washes her body.

All the girls had moved to the showers after dropping their suits off into the hamper. Stephanie was showering next to Jessie.

“I didn’t think we had to inform your mother everything.” Cortney was washing her body.

“Loose lips, sink ships,” Stephanie repeat something she heard one of the mechanics at the base quote.

“Oh, I never thought of that.” Cortney looks at their youngest member.

“But he can be trusted, can’t he?” Kara looks at Cortney.

“Yes, but maybe I should wait to answer anything he asks me about what we are doing.”

That might be a good idea, Cortney.” Jennifer washes her hair and lets the conditioner sink in.

“What are you going to do, Jen?” Kara looks over towards Jennifer.

“I am going to do some exploring of an old Native American site.” Jennifer still loved exploring.

“Don’t you need permission to go to those sites?” Kara looks at Jennifer for an answer.

“Yes, and since I am the new Thunder Hawk. It comes with certain perks. I’m meeting up with Chief Spotted Elk and several other council members.”

“That should be fun.” Jessie and Kara were going shopping and visiting some of the restaurants in the area.

“Well, I’m going horseback riding and to the rodeo this weekend.” Stephanie was going with some of her friends to the rodeo.

“Sounds like everyone is going to have fun this weekend.” Cortney finishes her shower and dries off.

“Yep.” Jessie steps out next and gets dressed as well.

The girls walk out of the locker room wearing normal clothes and ready for the weekend. Each of them had been allowed to choose a vehicle for themselves. Jessie and Kara both drove a Toyota Prius. Jennifer had her Discovery, Land Rover, and Cortney was driving a Porsche Boxster Convertible.

They also had residents off the base as well. Jessie and Kara shared a condo, Cortney was renting an apartment and Jennifer was still staying with Pat and her husband.

“I’ll see you, ladies, on Monday.” Cortney walks over to her car and gets in.

“Alright, be safe and have fun.” Stephanie watches as Jennifer, Jessie, Kara, and Cortney drive off.

She heads towards the maintenance bay where Sam and her daughter were. She walks in and spots Samantha’s newest aircraft mechanics hanging upside down inside one of the Knight Hawks. Stephanie didn’t know her name, but she did know she was a child genius and graduated from MIT at the age of sixteen years old.

Barbara couldn’t believe her luck at being hired by Aero Flight and assigned to their newest fighters. The technology she was seeing while installing a new part into the tight engine department was unbelievable. She has never seen anything like it and didn’t know what half of it did.
She climbs back up out of the access panel and tries to get her blood to flow back to the way it should.

“Hi, Mrs. Scott.” Stephanie waves to Mrs. Scott.

Barbara hears her name and spots Stephanie waving to her. She waves back to her “what are you up to, Steph?”

“Nothing, I’m just waiting on my mother to get off. I and the other girls have the weekend off.”

“Lucky you.” Barbara climbs down off the rear of the new fighter.

“Does Sam have you working this weekend?” Stephanie knew Samantha normally worked on the weekend.

“Yes, the factory is sending us two new modes of transport they have been working on recently.” Barbara was told that she and several other members will be assigned to prepare the transport.

“Are those transports going to be easy to ready?”

“Nothing is ever easy. However, it should be fun to work on. It’s an all-new design.” Barbara loved new things.

Stephanie wonders how experienced Barbara was. Because she sounded like she was talking from experience.

“So, what are your plans this weekend?” Barbara knew Stephanie was Patricia’s daughter.

“I’m going horseback riding with mom and dad and afterward, I’m going to the rodeo. I’ve never been before, that I know of.” Stephanie still had memory problems. None of her old life has surfaced.

“You know, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a rodeo before. Take lots of pictures for me.”

“Okay.” Stephanie hears her watch beep letting her know her mother wanted her.

“See you later, Mrs. Scott.” Stephanie waves goodbye to Barbara.

She spots her mother waiting for her. A smile appears on her face as she walks toward her.

Pat spots Stephanie walking towards her. She was proud of her. This past week, she has worked hard to prove she could keep up with the other women.

“Are you ready to go, sweetie?”

“Yes ma’am.” As Stephanie gets in on the passenger side of her mother’s car.

Sounds like they are adjusting well to the new situation. Somehow I do not think the wings are going to compete well against the jet packs except for range.

Jet pack vs Wings

Jet pack Pros: Anybody can be trained to use.
Faster

Cons: Limited fuel tank capacity
Vulnerable to sabotage
Trackable heat source, vulnerable to shoulder-fired IR missiles
Hard to conceal

Wings, Pros: Always there
Resistant to sabotage
No fuel supply needed, use limited only by person's stamina
Low IR signature, low radar signature
Easily concealable when not in use

Cons: Not useable by others
Useability limited by user's stamina, fatigue
Slower

So there you have it, the pros and cons of wings vs jet packs.
