Jenny follows Amanda as she escorted her to an elevator. She watched how she walked, to see if she could improve how she walked as well.
“Amanda, does Camelot have a dress code here?” Jenny was kind of curious because of what color Amanda’s hair was.
“Yes and no, it's casual dress around here, unless you’re the bosses. As for the hairstyle, everything is okay. You can’t have any profanity styled in your hair or inked on your body. Pass that, you can have any hairstyle you want. Now, I wouldn’t come to work in pj’s or sweatpants.” Amanda enters her security card into the slot.
The elevator starts moving downwards towards the basement. Jenny was surprised that the elevator was moving downwards. She wonders why they were heading downwards.
Amanda noticed the expression on Jenny’s face. A smile appears on Amanda’s face “wondering why we’re heading downwards?”
“Yeah.” Jenny hadn’t realized her expression was that obvious.
“Tinker tends to all the computer systems and such. Plus, she has one of the biggest offices in the Castle.”
The elevator stops at sublevel three. The door opens and Jenny couldn’t believe how big Tinker’s work area was. It was as big as some of the warehouses she had worked in.
“I told you it was big.” There was a huge cheshire smile on Amanda’s face.
“How does she get anything done in a place like this?” Jenny follows behind Amanda as they exit the elevator.
“Oh, she gets a lot done. It’s finding her when you need her that is the problem.” Amanda walks towards an area that had been set up as an office.
Jenny spots a woman wearing a pair of light color coveralls sitting at a desk that had over fifteen monitors in front of her. She couldn’t see the face, but she was sure that the person was Tinker.
“Hey boss, I brought your guest down to you. Now, can I get back to tormenting Reese?” Amanda looks at Tinker.
Tinker looks up and notices Amanda escorting a dark hair girl. The girl herself matched the background picture she had of her. Well, according to the background check she did, the person was born male. But identify as female and had been seeing a counselor at a free clinic about her gender dysphoria.
“Yes, you can go back and torment Reese some more. Thank you.”
“Oh, Goodie! I get to torment Reese some more.” Amanda was happy as she skips off.
Jenny looks at Amanda as she skips off and wonders who Reese was and why Amanda likes to torment them. She turns back around and look at Tinker and couldn’t believe how much she had changed. She still looked like she did that day the bomb went off in school.
Tinker looks at Jenny “sorry about that. Amanda is a little strange, but a good worker.”
“So, where have me and you met before?” Tinker was curious.
“Jefferson High School. September 15. You and your father were working on the electrical lines when a bomb went off in school. I got hit by some shrapnel and you performed first aid on me. You had been injured yourself, but you still helped me.”
“I remember. You had a lot of pieces sticking out of you and your arm looked like a hamburger.” Tinker remembered that day.
“Yes, and I wanted to thank you for what you did. Also, I’m hoping you might have an opening for me as well. A lot of the jobs I have had weren’t that good.”
“Well, I’m glad you recovered from the wounds you received that day. I know a lot of your classmates didn’t as for a job opening, I’ve looked over what skills and previous jobs you have done as a temp worker. Most of your skills are basic, but I think I might have an opening in my department as an assistant to one of my people. I will tell you now, she is a taskmaster, but she’ll never ask you to do something she isn’t willing to do herself.”
“What type of work is it? Because I’m willing to do anything.” Jenny hopes it was something she could do.
“It’s supplies and I don’t mean just pencils and papers either. I mean everything that is required to keep the Castle up and operational. Katelyn has been bugging me for the past month to hire more people and that she needs an assistant that can keep up with her. The one she currently has isn’t able to work the hours she needs her for. So, you’ll be splitting the position with George. Do you think you can do this?” Tinker looks at Jenny to see if she is willing to try.
“If you think I have the skills to help her, sure. I’m willing to do whatever needs to be done. God knows I’ve done some shitty jobs as a temp.” Jenny hopes she can get days she needs to see a doctor about her transitioning.
Tinker just looks at her and wonders if she has what it takes. She knows Maria can train Jenny to her standards.
“Alright, I’ll put you on a ninety-day trial period and see how you do. Since you’re going to be on call with Maria, you’ll be staying with her at the Castle. How long do you think you’ll need to move your stuff?”
“About a week to completely move everything. What happens if I don’t work out?”
“Well, if we find that you’re not a good fit in the department you’re in, we’ll help you. We’ll see what your problem is and work on it. If you still don’t work out, we’ll pay for you to go back where you came from, or you can live in town. Since you’ll be staying here in the castle, we’ll keep a little bit of money in reserve for you to move. If you do work out, you’ll get a boost in pay and all the benefits the company has to offer.”
“Does that include training for something else that I might enjoy?” Jenny was thinking she would like to get professional training in computers.
“We’ll pay for you to be trained. The bosses always like when us pinions want more skills.” Tinker knew Morgana and Arthur would pay for any of their employees to increase their knowledge or skills.
Jenny stands and looks at Tinker. She weighs the options she has, which isn’t much of what Camelot is willing to do for her.
“What type of health packages does the company has?”
“Camelot has some of the best health options available. We have an onsite counselor and a Doctor. If you need more, like in your case.
Camelot will pay for the counseling and after a year of working for them. They will pay for the operation as well.”
Jenny was shocked when Tinker mentioned her case. She looks at Tinker “how did you know?”
A smirk appears on Tinker’s face “Camelot has connections with some of the best intelligence people around. We do a complete background on you, even before you show up here for an interview.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Trust me, with the type of work we do. Everyone who works here has a ten-year background check done on them. If something triggers an alert, we do a deeper search on you. So, do you still want to work for us, or should I interview the next person?”
“You mean there’s another person for the job?” Jenny was curious.
“What do you think?” Tinker didn’t have another person line up to be an assistant to Maria yet.
Jenny looks at Tinker but couldn’t read her. It was like she wasn’t going to show any emotions.
“I’m going to guess, that you have others applying for the position.” Jenny wasn’t sure.
“And you’ll be wrong. We don’t advertise for positions here. We search resumes people submit online and resumes for other companies. We’re very picky on who we hire.”
“So, it was a trick question?” Jenny felt embarrassed she failed such a simple question.
“Yes and no. I wanted to see how you analyze a question. You took time to think about the question, before saying something. That tells me a lot about you. Now, I’m going to take you back upstairs and over to security to get you a more permanent badge. Our head of recruitment will meet you over there to have you fill out some forms. Do me a favor and read everything she gives you. Don’t just sign them. Because some of them is a test.” A smile appears on Tinker's face.
“Let me guess, they got you?” Jenny figures there was a reason Tinker was warning her.
“Yes, they got me big time.” Tinker couldn’t believe she fell for the trick either.
Tinker escorts Jenny back over to the elevator and inserts her card in the slot. Once a car arrives, the door opens and the two of them enter.
