From the Sublime to the ...

Yesterday, I sat on the Pier at Southwold, Suffolk (just about the most easterly point in the UK) and ate an Ice Cream. It was sunny, warm and balmy.
Earlier in the day I'd watched Marsh Harriers performing their aerial courtship, some Mediterranean Gulls nestbuilding and other birds singing in the sun.

Definitely the calm before the storm
This morning and less than 10 miles from Southwold I woke up to find almost 2in of snow on the ground.

And there is more to come. Brrrr.

Take Two Girls - Part 5

With the news of the impending visit from Lucy's Mother the pair sprang into action. Not only did they have to prepare their home but themselves as well. As ever, Andrea was the more organised of the two. She prepared a seemingly endless list of things to do before the evening of Good Friday. Lucy both applauded and cursed her partner in the project. Applauded for the way Andrea just didn't panic and got on with it without much fuss. Cursed because Lucy had a lot to do just when she should be working on her dissertation.

Take Two Girls - Part 4

The discovery of the money gave Lucy another problem, Andrea. She'd promised that she'd live with her until the Cowes week event. Now, she had enough money to do as she pleased with her life without her parents trying to tell her what to do ever again.

It was then that she realised that was exactly the reason why Andrea was crying. Andrea must have realised that Lucy didn't need her anymore. The visible change in Lucy over the past weeks thanks to Andrea had been there for everyone to see apart from Lucy herself.

Slowly it began to dawn upon her that Andrea had made her take stock of her life. She didn't know what she wanted to do with it but it, whatever it was, was on her mind now instead of being pushed back into the darkest recesses and filed under 'tomorrow'.

Had Andrea and her no-nonsense approach to life had made her grow up at least a little bit?

That and a thousand other questions raced through her mind. It was only when Andrea touched her arm lightly and said,

"Earth to planet Lucy, come in please?"

Take Two Girls - Part 3

Lucy let out a startled, "You can't be serious? Do mean to say that you put me through all that for a joke?"

"Lucy, everything I've said today has been deadly serious. Come back into the lounge and think about what I said while dish up dessert. Ok?"

Lucy followed Andrea out of the bedroom and still somewhat in a daze, she sat down at the table.

Andrea disappeared into the kitchen and returned with desert.

"Here you go, Crème Brulee de la Maison," said Andrea as she placed a dish down in front of Lucy.

Almost there...

I'm nearly done (and done in for that matter) getting my aged mother into a Care Home.
I moved her from the temporary home where she's been for the past 5 weeks into a home that is funded by the County Council.

Friday is the big day when her home for the past 24 years will be cleared, the meters read, the phone disconnected and everything else.

Then next Thursday it is her 96th Birthday.

Take Two Girls - Part 1

[at a Student House in South Leeds]

"Fuck shit and double fuck," exclaimed the attractive young woman as she stormed into the sitting room of her house.

"What's up dude?" asked another of the occupants who was clearly 'high' after consuming his third joint of the day.

"Yeah, why the swearing Luce?" asked the third member of their household who was pouring over a laptop computer.

"I called home to wish my Mother a happy birthday only to find out that my frigging father is throwing a huge party in the summer for his fucking fiftieth birthday. It's going to happen during 'Cowes Week'."

Castaways Choice

This is a repost of an old story that seems to have disappeared from the site.

This piece takes the form of an interview between Ellen Hammond (EH) and Rosemary Donaldson (RD).

[EH] My guest today is the former politician and civil rights campaigner Rosemary Donaldson. Welcome to the show Rosemary.

[RD] Thank you for inviting me Ellen.

[EH] You have had a very varied and incident packed life. How do you think you would survive on a Desert Island?

[RD] How big is this island?

[EH] As big as you would like it to be?

The First Time I Saw Her Face

I can remember it well. It was the 2nd January 2015. I was in London and it was wet and windy. I was at a bit of a loose end because my now ex-girlfriend Sonya, had decided that her new year's resolution was to become a lesbian. We'd come down to London on New Years Eve to see the Fireworks and stuff. The plan was that were going to see a few shows and do a bit of shopping, before heading home to the Dales. Thinking back on it, she'd been not her usual self since Christmas.

Where have all the ...

SOLO's gone?

Ok, I have to say that I've posted more than one multi-part story in the past year but these were intersperced with solo pieces but it does seem that there has been a big drop off of SOLO works in recent months.

Do people not like writing then anymore? I do and most pieces I start, start off as SOLO's and only go to multi-part when it becomes obvious that it will work better when published like that.

Look out for SOLO story from me over the weekend. It will be called 'The First Time I Saw Her Face'.

The Busker

"How did we do today?" asked the older man, Joe
His son, John looked up from counting the cash from their usual Saturday market stall where they sold eggs that came from their smallholding.

"About a hundred down on last month," replied John with a hint of sadness in his voice.

"That's two weeks in a row. Any ideas why?"

John knew the answer bit his father might not appreciate the answer. After a moment's hesitation, he decided to tell him.
"Isn't it a bit obvious?"

Joe looked at his son for a second then he realised what his son was hinting at.

2017 and what to look out for in 2018

Well, here we are almost two weeks into the new year and it seems that we are doomed to have grey skies each and every day here in my bit of the UK.

If I look back to 2017, I find that I have posted almost 50 items of fiction, be they SOLO's or parts to a multi-part story.
Some have been very well received and some not so. That is life.

So, what is to come for 2018?

The Things we do for Love - Part 7

“Ladies, ladies, let us not get carried away. There is a lot more to discuss that could potentially stop the project dead in the water. May I suggest that we break for lunch? That will give everyone time to think and try to consider what going forward may mean to the rest of your life.”

No one disagreed so I added,

“It is almost one o’clock now. Why don’t we reconvene at two thirty?”

Again, no one disagreed so the meeting broke up. The new arrivals went and found their rooms with the help of Ann-Marie.

That left Jo and myself alone in the kitchen.

The Things we do for Love - Part 6

When Jo and I had stopped laughing, I said to Ann-Marie,

“I’m sorry for our reaction. It was most uncalled for. I hope we haven’t offended you in any way?”

To my relief, Ann-Marie was smiling.

“No offence. Some people who have seen that document have even thrown it back in my face not literally but physically.”

Strangers in the night

It was a brilliant moonlit night. The warm weather of the past few weeks had made the nights unbearable for sleeping.
One of those who couldn’t sleep was William(Bill) Clancy. That night he’d gone for a drive down to the coast in his car.

As he topped the crest of a hill, he saw the gleam of the sea ahead. He wasn’t there yet. There was a steep hill to negotiate first.

He carefully started down the hillside. He saw another pair of headlights on the other side of the valley. He judged that the car was heading his way.

The Things we do for Love - Part 5

Jo went off to work the next morning with her thigh bands unlocked. I’d given her the key to the chain that connected the two bands but the locks that held them around her thigh were different so she could experiment with the chain for a while. I’d given Jo the option of not wearing them but she gave me a steely look. The change that had come over her since we’d settled here was all to the good. She wasn’t the ‘appendage’ that supported me in my role as CEO. She’d got a new found confidence and determination that pleased me no end.

End of Term

[At a School, somewhere two weeks before Christmas]

“Miss Featherstone, the Headmistress would like to see you in her Office?” said the Head’s secretary after she’d popped her head around my classroom door.

Sadly, my class of fifteen year olds were more interested in which ‘C List’ celebrity had either had a boob job or was … well, having it off with some other reality TV performer than 'Britain during the Industrial Revolution'. I refuse to call them stars. Most of them had as much talent as I had in my little finger.

May You Never

[This is an oldie from late September 2010]

“Stay where you are love. I’ll call for an ambulance,” said the tall man

“Fuck off and leave me alone” replied the woman who was obviously injured.

“Nonsense. I can see that you need medical attention. That blow to the head needs some stitches.”

“What are you a fucking doctor or something? Get the hell out of here.”

He laughed.

“No. I’m a special constable. Just on my way to work.”

“Oh no. That’s all I need, a part time pig. I’m ok. I’ll be off in a minute.”

I am not Cinderella - Part 3

The flight west was long and boring. I read the report on my sisters at least three times. It seemed incredible that Ruby and Emerald had not only admitted their crimes but engaged in therapy relating to anger management.

Sapphire on the other hand was totally unrepentant. The report contained copies of letters that had been smuggled out of her prison by other inmates. She was vehement in her goal of making sure that I didn’t enjoy what she considered were ill gotten gains that were in her warped view of the world, rightly hers.

I am not Cinderella - Part 2

I was slightly fearful when I was ushered into the presence of the President. All the Secret Service and White House Officials were very standoffish or downright rude towards me from the moment I’d arrived at Camp David. Despite the summons coming from the man himself, they treated me with an attitude that was in my opinion insulting. They made it clear that I was not very welcome. I guessed that with the pending inauguration they had their hands full.

“Please come on in and take a seat,” he replied in his distinctive New England accent.

I am not Cinderella - Part 1

A modern twist on a classic story
[At a house in a more fashionable part of Washington DC]

“We are going to the President’s Inauguration Ball next week. I saw we, but naturally a non-entity like yourself won’t be going of course but we will make sure that you don’t sit down while we are out,” said my sister Sapphire with a smirk on her face.

The Things we do for Love - Part 4

Life got back to something approaching normality fairly soon after our little adventure in Malvern. That trip had sort of made the decision that I’d been mulling over for some considerable time even more clear. I wasn’t going back to life as Daniel. Daniella was pretty well here to stay for the foreseeable future.

It is 'Panto' time again

It is Panto season again here in the UK. All manner of tales are being performed all over the country. My local theatre is doing 'Aladdin' this year.

I've done a couple of stories in the past where the action centred around a Panto.

This year, I've done something slighly different. Call it a 're-imagining' of a classic tale.

My tale is in three parts that will be posted next monday, tuesday and wednesday.
It has three ugly sisters, a ball, a sort of prince charming and of course a waif who is plucked out of servitude and sent to the ball.

The Things we do for Love - Part 3

I debated and dithered for several days about taking the next step. Jo, to her credit didn’t push me. I racked my brains to find a reason why I shouldn’t do this. I did a lot of investigations on the internet. Some directions it took in me were frankly… odd to say the least.

Dreams are what you make of them

The famous words ‘I had a dream’ means many things to many people. My ‘I had a dream’ moments got me into trouble more than once when I was a teenager.

The Things we do for Love - Part 2

Jo could always wrap me around her little finger. I suppose that is part of what loving your partner the way I do is. So, despite my protestations, I was soon ushered upstairs in our spare bedroom and trying on the underwear, stockings dress and shoes.

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” asked Jo hold up the two-flesh coloured ‘things’ that were the false breasts in her hands.

“Do I have to?”

“If you do then I’ll get changed into something nice just for you.”

The Things we do for Love - Part 1

[somewhere in the US Midwest]

With a sad heart, I stood up in front of my employees. I was not looking forward to what I was about to say.

“It is with deep regret that as of 5pm today, I will no longer be the founder and CEO of this fine Company. I have been ousted by a combination of greedy Bankers, Venture Capitalists and Chinese money. Many of you know how much I have fought against this eventuality for the last six months. Ultimately, I lost and sadly so will you all. It is pretty certain that in a few months this facility will be closed down, the building stripped and production transferred to Chengdu in China.”

New Shoes, New Life, New Horizons and a New World?

I punched the speed dial on my Mobile.
It was a Friday afternoon in early March and I needed some entertainment.

“Hello Jen. What’s up? Your Boss still trying to feel you up then?”

“Hi Kylie. No. He’s not. I’ve threatened to tell his wife if he tries it again.”

They both laughed.

“As it’s the last Friday of the month and I’m assuming that you’ve been paid so how about some fun tonight?”

“I don’t know Jen,” she said with a big Sigh.

“Come on K. It’s been nearly nine months now.”

The Twelve Dreams of Christmas

December 2017 Christmas Dreams Story Contest Entry

[24th December 2011, Helmand Province, Afghanistan]

The special forces soldier spoke quietly into his radio,
“Leopard One to Lion, come in please?”

“Lion receiving,” came the reply.

“Leopard One is waiting for the Antelopes at 951.”

“Roger Leopard One. Lion out.”

The radio went dead.

The soldier shifted his position slightly and peered out into the gathering doom of Christmas Eve.

The Good Wife

Hugh Blair was a man with a secret. None of his friends or family had inkling that he had what some would call a dark secret that if he had his way would never see the light of day. There were other things about his family that he hoped would also never surface but underneath them was the one that played on his mind more frequently in recent years.

Helping Hand - Part 10 -Finale

I knew that my bravado over the farm had not fooled Cheryl for one second but I needed some time to think.
That bloody TV show! If it hadn’t been for that I’d still be in Yorkshire in a dead-end job fixing bloody busses and not having to fight my emotions like I was right now.

Then I looked around me. At the sea. At the sky. At the village behind me. This was a far cry from a former pit village in South Yorkshire and a job fixing busses, it wasn’t all bad.
However, I just wanted to curl up and die each time I remembered that TV show.

Helping Hand - Part 9

I was still in a fragile state when Cheryl returned from Aberystwyth.

“What’s wrong?”

I pointed at the TV. Another episode of that dammed TV show was just coming to an end.

“Oh. I see. It must be hard to see your old self, isn’t it?”

I just nodded and wiped a tear away from my cheek.

Cheryl came and wrapped her arms around me.

Helping Hand - Part 8

When I arrived home, I saw that there were two messages on my answer-phone. Both were from Holly saying that they were at their place and that Diana was safe. That made me feel happy but the long day had been very tiring.

I rose early on the Sunday morning and went for a long run. I needed to get the stiffness from a lot of time in the saddle out of my limbs. By the time I returned home I was feeling a lot better and ready for a nice large breakfast. I opted for what I called a ‘Full Welsh’. This was grilled bacon with Poached Eggs on Toast with a side order of Cockles. It wasn’t to everyone’s taste due to the cockles but as the Eggs were from my hens, the Bacon from Pembrokeshire and the Cockles from near Llanelli, you could hardly be more Welsh than that.

The rest of the day was quiet which was perfect for me.

Helping Hand - Part 7

If I was expecting a bit of peace and quiet after the wedding, then I was sorely mistaken.

Two days later I was in the middle of collecting eggs from the hens when I heard a car coming up the drive.
I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the car and its occupants.

“What on earth are you two doing here?” I said as Holly and William got out of his Land Rover.

“Shouldn’t you be on some tropical island in the sun by now?”

The 'Tax' on being different

This video blog on the BBC is quite illuminating.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-41502661/100-women-i-tran...

Firstly, the narrator is Transgendered and a PHD.
She talks about the monetary cost of being a woman in business today.
She puts it at $250K over a lifetime. (how much worse will it be for M2F transpeople?)

Progress was painfully slow with my development plans. I knew what sort of thing I wanted but getting past that was proving difficult. It was Ruby who provided the solution to my blockage.

I had just finished cleaning out the Hens when she came walking up the drive carrying a large shopping bag.

“Hello Monica, do you have a minute? I need a favour from you.”

“Hi Ruby. Sure. Just let me put this lot of hen droppings into the compost heap and I’ll be with you. Why don’t you go into the kitchen and put the kettle on? I’ll only be a minute or two.”

Helping Hand - next chapter

The posting of the next chapter of "Helping Hand" will be delayed by one week.
I'm in Brittany on a Motocycle Holiday and the internet is a tad iffy from the Gite where I am staying. That is all down to me for choosing one that is in the middle of nowhere (8km N.W. or Rostreven if you want to know)

It will be back next Tueday.

Helping Hand - Part 5

The remainder journey home seemed to take forever. I could tell that Kylie was tired because on several corners she either didn’t lean with me or leaned the other way.

When we finally arrived home, neither of us was in the mood for anything other than going straight to bed. It had been a very long day.

I crawled out of bed knowing that it was late but not sure how late it was. My first thought was to hit the shower and use that to wake me up.

Helping Hand - Part 4

[Back to the present day and carrying on with the story]

Kylie was the first person I’d ever been told all the gory details. I wasn’t including Gloria, Robert, Julia or Charlie in that because they are all part of the story. It felt rather strange to have spent a good 2 hours reciting the events, the highs and lows of how I came to be here.

“So that’s who Gloria is! I would never have guessed.”

Helping Hand - Part 3

[Authors Note]
There may be some historical bits in this section that some readers may take issue with. No insults were or are intended. I was only trying to illustrate that some people have very long memories and do not forgive the actions of others easily much like the feud between the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s.

Helping Hand - Part 2

By the time I woke up, the storm of the previous evening had blown away and the morning was bright and clear. I pulled back the curtains in my Bedroom and looked out to sea. A few ships were visible well out at sea. Two fishing boats were about a mile or so off shore. It looked like a perfect morning.

Helping Hand - Part 1

The first of the Autumn Gales was making its way up the St George’s Channel and into the Irish Sea. The late afternoon sky was darkening and the one ship that I could see from my window looked like it was in for a rough night.

I was in the process of pulling the curtains and shutting out the storm when I saw a brief light coming from the half ruin of a barn that marked the edge of my property. At first I thought that it was a reflection from the last of the sun but it appeared again. By now, the sun was totally covered by the approaching storm clouds.

I pulled the curtains shut and tried to put the possibility that someone was out there to the back of my mind.

What constitutes a 'Universe'?

I have an idea that came from to solo pieces (That are linked) that expands the scope of further stories that use the environment that is described in those stories.
Does this expansion of scope constitute what people mean by a Universe? These further stories are linked but essentially stand alone pieces.

So, what does constitute a Universe?
