Christmas Shoes.

I know some of you are going to ask why I didn't enter this in the contest for Christmas stories. I didn't want this one to be in a contest. It's just my gift to all of you.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and may someone love you as much as that little boy loved his sister.

Be well, all of you.

Christmas Shoes

By
Maggie Finson

This story was inspired by a song of the same name done by a gospel group called New Song. If you want to hear some really moving Christmas music I urge you to look them up.

I was shopping late for Christmas, not unusual for a guy my girl friend was fond of teasing me, in a women’s shoe store. And no it wasn’t for my girlfriend. I was looking for something for myself.

Gunfire was almost constant as I stared down the hall I knew held a very powerful Telepath though I still wasn’t able to see him and chewed on ideas to make things more difficult for him.

Yes it is my Birthday.

Yes, everyone it is another one of those for me. (Armond, it may not be today, or tomorrow, but remember -- revenge is a dish best served cold. Blabbermouth. :) )

A lot has happened this past year for and to me. As with everyone else, some of it good some of it bad. My health took a downward turn, but that is balanced by my learning to not only cope but to use other skills I've learned to not let that slow me down any more than necessary.

I gave the man sitting on the other side of the table a glare that plainly said my patience was close to being gone and my temper was frayed to the point of being dangerous.

I could only sit back in my chair and groan while people cleaned up the mess I’d made on the carpet. The fact that the mess was the blood and brains of my former Chief of Staff was something I was doing my best not to dwell on at the moment.

I met Donahue along with several others from the platoon I was more and more starting to think of as my people in a tunnel leading off from the main cavern and stopped when I saw the large plastic bag on a gurney. “Where did you find him?”

My office was — well, almost embarrassing. There was a bronze plaque on the outer door that simply read BASE COMMANDER, but once past that it was something that had me in near shock.

Our Secondary Base, the Beta site it was called was in a huge frigging cave buried under a mountain. Looking around as I got out of the helicopter that had delivered me I recalled the conversation in the Colonel’s office the day before yesterday.

At first, Evan Houston thought he was just another teenager with average teen problems. When he found out that he had the ability to alter the world around him with a mere thought, he realized he was in deep shit,
at the Center!

One finished...

Right now I'm feeling a mix of elation and sadness. A story I've lived with, thought about and sweated over for years is finished. It's never easy to let your children go, I know this because my youngest is moving out on her own tomorrow, both instances are bittersweet but tell me that I've managed to do something right even with all the mistakes made along the way.

After a Long Wait

Hi, apologies for the wait on this next chapter of Maiden by Decree. Real Life has once again conspired to keep me from the keyboard and I know this one is short. I wanted to make sure all you believed me when I was telling you I hadn't dropped the story and it will be completed.

I can tell you that the chapter after this one is going to get really exciting and will be longer.

Alis, the King and Queen’s personal healer examined Deirdre with a slight smile on her face while watching other disrobe. “You have changed a lot, Your Grace, since I last examined you.”

“True enough.” Deirdre agreed with a hint of resignation in her voice, but suddenly smiled. “But it has put me together with my soulmate, so I suppose I shouldn’t complain, should I?”

Some things about Dream Lover

Just a few words about the story Hope and I are working on for all you inquiring minds out there. First, I looked and unlike the Bikini Beach stories found nothing about MAU being closed. If I missed something there I profusely apologize to both Elrod and everyone else.

We are sticking with the canon, in that the machines work for about four days before shutting down. The grad students have just been having way too much fun experimenting in a few days time, which Hope and I will address in the next few chapters as the story unfolds.

Okay, Maggie would want me to be honest here and tell you I came up with this story concept. But since the writing started happening we have sent so many emails back and forth I think we are responsible for slowing down the internet by at least 1%. So if your connection is slowing down - it's all Maggie's fault. We are having an absolute ball writing this.

A few notes about some definitions in Maiden by Decree 27

Many of you likely already know these things, but I thought I'd post a few definitions for those who don't.

First, I patterned the ship Princess Deirdre after the USS Constitution, with thanks to both the original designer and the sites that gave me the information I needed. The Constitution did have a stern post as I've described, able to create drag and pull the ship around on her stern. It was quite a surprise for more than a few British warships fighting her.

“Then we strike while they’re at sea.” The leader of the group announced. “And so throw the succession in Jhalmar into the chaos that suits our plans and will help us achieve our goals. Make sure our ships’ captains understand they are to take no prisoners and to leave nothing but flaming wreckage behind them.”

Happy New Year.

Just been thinking and a lot of us of had a really 'interesting' 2009. Here's hoping that 2010 is much better for all of us.

May the sun always be at your back, and may you be dead fifteen minutes before the devil finds out. Thanks to all of you for the comments, and enjoying my efforts at story telling. And to Erin, Sephrenia, Edeyn (sp) and all the rest of you out there, you're a wonderful bunch and don't let anyone tell you differently.

Happy New Year!

I'm back, mostly

Hi all. I know I've been absent for some time here. Health issues, you know. I won't go into those here, just tell you all that I've got the next chapter of Maiden up and do profusely apologize for the delay in getting it to those of you who have waiting so patiently.

Or not so patiently. lol.

The bad news is that I can't guarantee that I'll be able to keep up with posting a new chapter each week, the good news is that I'm writing again at last.

So that's the news from here.

Gently pulling Deirdre forward a bit more, so she now stood to the front, the king went on. “In recognition of dangers endured, and defeated, along with valued service to the crown, this Lady, my heir’s betrothed, will now hold Lindsay as part of her personal holdings. She will therefore now be known officially as The Lady Deirdre, Duchess of Lindsay, and that title will fall to her heirs, in perpetuity.”

Delays on stories and my (disgustingly slow) recovery

Hi everyone. Just a quick note to assure those of you interested that I haven't given up on Maiden by Decree. Far from it, actually. I have the next chapter plotted out, just need to rouse my sleeping muse (I think Phoebe is nursing a monumental hangover after visiting Bek Corvin's muse for a month) and get the energy to actually sit at the keyboard and write.

On the delay with Maiden by Decree and other things.

I have been slow with finishing this up, I know. But I've been fighting pneumonia over the past few weeks, to the point of spending a week in the hospital then spending the next week going nuts because I couldn't go anywhere or do anything in spite of being home then. I'm still recovering, getting stronger as the days go by, and not sleeping quite as much, plus I can breathe without oxygen now (a big plus, trust me.) So I will get to the finale of Maiden, just as soon as I feel up to actually writing again.

About my Halloween story

The shaping is a long story, and be warned, it is a horror story. I had intended to post it in chapters but no access to the internet for a week more or less finished that idea if I wanted the whole thing posted under the deadline for the contest. Since I had no access to a computer, either, I apologize in advance for typos I may have missed while going back over it today.

On a historical note, just to head off questions or arguments, the facts regarding the Osage are true and documented elsewhere. The Spanish explorers I made up to suit my requirements for the story.

The Shaping - Revised

I've edited this story some and added bits that will help things make more sense, as promised.

The Shaping

A house can be many things. It can be shelter from the elements, a place to hang your hat and coat after work, a haven from the madly rushing world in general, a home filled with warmth, comfort and the sounds of friends and loved ones.

But sometimes, a house goes bad.

“Try this one.” She smirked, handing him a stave made from gleaming ebony wood with silver caps at both ends.

“This is magic!” He responded looking the weapon over with a curious expression on his rather plain face. “What does it do?”

“You’re the mage,” Mina answered simply, “you figure it out, but you can hit people with it until you do.”

“I think we may want to move our attack time forward, my lord.” Sestalphas calmly told Garret.

“Why do that?” The Knight asked. “We already have things planned out.”

“Well, I think your lady is alive and well.” The other answered and pointed at the walls of Aruendal Castle. “Look for yourself.”

Many Thanks to Everyone

For all the positive and other comments on Maiden by Decree. My muse had left me for a while there thanks to a month long bout of illness that I won't go into here. Please know that all your comments, even the few negative ones helped me with the story so far and were very much appreciated. And yes even negative comments if made as comments and suggestions, help an author improve the story in question.

The Walls Come Tumbling Down

Or: Should I stay or should I Go?

By

Maggie Finson

Deirdre watched Mina and Riddler move to commit what quiet mayhem they could manage while trying to ignore the muttering Anthalas was doing to enable the spell in support of Riddler’s mission to wet all the powder for the cannon on the walls of Leslie Castle to happen without the thief returning for refills on the water bag he carried.

Maiden by Decree Chapter 22

Okay, it's been awhile and I apologize for the wait. I know this is a short chapter, but I wanted to get it out there so hope on the story wasn't given up...

In this chapter plans are laid, some are nixed, and in general, the mayhem continues.

Maiden at Large

Or: What Do You Mean, Armed and Dangerous?

On Maiden by Decree and Wings of Shadow

To those of you waiting for more chapters on these two stories, never fear, they will show up. A bout with a mild form of pneumonia and other RL problems have gotten in the way of my writing recently is all. Plus, my muse decided to take a sharp left turn and play with something completely different from those two stories.

Once I stop falling asleep at the keyboard, I'll get more done on Maiden and Wings.

Be well, all of you. Later.
