Rona is from the novella "Never", and Ruth is from the novella "How Far", both of them have been in very bad situations previous to this story, and it will really help to read both of them before reading this one. Don't worry, this story isn't as quite as dark as their origin stories.

Our multi-generational space habitat, the Starship Cooperation, has been cruising through space for four hundred years now. I suppose it's fitting that I take on the role of captain on our quadricentennial year. I suppose it's fitting that I take on the role of President of Starship Operations on our quadricentennial year. I am the first gender-fluid president on our ship, after all.

"Look Erik, you're the best range hand I got, and a damned good Marine. You know that, otherwise I'd have never offered you the job. But I don't want to lose any more people than I already have. I like you a lot, and the rest of the Crisis Team, and the monkeys down in security are getting worried. So. Tomorrow, you're going to take the day off, and then you are going to go see the doc on Thursday. Full battery of tests, so try not to kill the docs."

I wake up feeling like I have the worst hangover in my lifetime. My head is swimming and my insides burn, to add to that it feels like someone is shoving two fingers down my throat.

I walked along a line of weary and wounded men. But they weren't men, at least not normal ones, their eyes were too big, the ears were pointed like an elf, they're skin was flawless except where dirt and wounds marred the almost angelic appearance. I'd have said they were the most beautiful people I'd ever seen except for their eyes, their eyes were hard, I'd seen similar eyes before, but those were pretty few and far between. Every single one of the men who were wearing what looked like fantasy armour, with real weapons that had seen hard use were staring at me as if they were thinking about the easiest and quickest way to kill me if I became a threat.

He knew very well if this worked, even if it didn't, he was probably dooming himself to hell. He had most likely done so already anyway. No matter. Arnie had abandoned God, as God had abandoned Arnie. No rightful god would show him an abomination against the Universe (that thing occupying the body of a woman for its own evil purpose) and punish him when he went to set it right. Punish him by placing a godfearing man in prison to spend years ... years ... being brutalized by animals with unthinkable appetites.

This is the story of how a boy's life changes after the very abrupt death of his mother.

The story itself starts with the boy remembering his mother's death which happened three years earlier, when he was just ten years old.

I get out of bed and stare at the disheveled youth in my mirror. Staring back at me is a skinny nineteen year old boy with long, scruffy brown hair wearing loose boxer shorts and a t-shirt. However, he won't be staring back at me for long.

Neal wanders into a business, having just been laid off from his job, looking for work. What he finds will stretch his ability to understand and cope with major life changes

I looked out across the mass of stars in the distance. I never stopped admiring space in its infinity. From our outpost at UF-2 we were as far from the planet Earth as humans had reasonably explored. There were those who had gone farther, but they were individuals or pirates. Usually they never returned, for which mankind was grateful, as we didn’t know what they had run into in the way of life forms, or what physical abnormality had done them up.

Born and raised on a farm, I was the closest thing to a son my dad was ever going to get. Mom almost died bringing me into this world. The doc had to remove from my mother a large part of what made babies after I was out of the way. Mom named me Katrina. Dad wanted that son he was never going to receive. He called me Jake.

Compared to his teammates, he was rather embarrassed on how he developed his powers. He didn't get hit with radiation or took some kind of chemical. He wasn't part of a super soldier program and he wasn't brilliant creating awesome technology. And he certainly didn't develop powers through surviving any tragic event. No, he developed powers through a small act of kindness.
