Chapter 10

Sean spent over an hour searching through the book for a safe place to open the portal. Soon after he began a portal opened onto the Labyrinth. He managed to close that one only to have one open up near the medusa. He hastily closed that one with his eyes closed. He had several more encounters like that before he managed to find something promising. Afterwards he took his own book out to read for an experiment. To his relief he managed to read without opening any portals. Maybe Jill had it right, after all. Maybe I really can get a handle on this. he thought hopefully.

By then he was exhausted, so he climbed into bed. He fell asleep with a smile, knowing he wouldn't be having any more of those 'dreams'.

Sean awoke groggily the next morning, having stayed up later than usual with his reading and portal experimentation. He was so slow he ended up skipping breakfast just to get to work on time. At work the harassment from his coworkers continued to escalate. He was tempted to open a portal and shove them through. I wonder how Kyle would handle Jurassic Park? he wondered with a smile. That thought buoyed his spirits and helped him to shrug off the taunts of his coworkers. They seemed put off by his attitude and they lost some of their enthusiasm.

After work he returned to his apartment to pick up the mythology book and Jurassic Park, which he stashed in his car, just in case. Never know when a thirty foot T-Rex might come in handy. he chuckled to himself as he walked over to Jill and Mike's.

"Hello Mike!" he said cheerfully as he walked in. Mike was playing tennis again. "I found a promising spot in the book last night."

Mike paused his game and looked over at Sean. "You look cheerful, have a good sleep?" he asked.

"Actually, I stayed up a little late reading, but I think I've gotten a little better control of this thing. I was able to read my book for a while without opening any portals!" he said happily.

"Good! That would really suck if you could never read again without opening one of those portals. Show me what you found." Mike replied. Sean showed him the place he'd marked in the book. "That looks promising." He agreed.

"So where's Jill?" Sean asked. "Still painting?"

"No, believe it or not, she finished the portrait she's been working on and locked up the studio so I couldn't see it. She seemed exhausted afterwards, so she took a nap. She woke up about an hour ago and started putting dinner together." Mike replied.

"Doesn't Jill usually let you see her paintings once she's done with them?" Sean asked.

Mike nodded. "Yeah, she does. She's acting weird about this portrait." Mike said.

"Huh. Well, I guess we'll find out what it's about soon enough." Sean said thoughtfully.

"So how was your day?" Mike asked.

"It started out as bad as yesterday, but it got better after a while." Sean replied with an enigmatic smile.

"What's that grin for?" Mike asked curiously.

"Well, when they were bugging me I was thinking about opening a portal to Jurassic Park and pushing them through. I guess I wasn't reacting the way they expected me to after that." Sean replied.

Mike laughed. "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea! You'll have to be careful, though, or you might open a portal in public without meaning to." Mike warned.

Sean shrugged. "Like I said, I seem to have better control over that now. But you're right, I don't want anyone besides you and Jill knowing about this. There's no telling what would happen if anyone else found out." Sean agreed.

"Is that Sean I hear out there?" Jill called out from the kitchen.

"Yeah, I'm here Jill." Sean replied.

"Well get in here, you two, dinner is ready!" she called back. Sean and Mike went into the kitchen and they ate their dinner.

"Sean found a good spot to use for our trip today." Mike said while he was cleaning up the dishes. It was the only thing he was allowed to do in the kitchen after his last cooking disaster the previous year.

"Let me see?" Jill asked, holding her hand out for the book. Sean handed it over and she looked it over. "Yeah, that looks promising." She agreed.

After Mike cleaned up they went to the living room. "Do you think we should go armed again?" Mike asked as Jill handed the book back to Sean.

Jill pondered that a moment before shaking her head and replying, "No, I don't think that's a good idea. Sean can get us out in a hurry if he has to, and I don't think it would impress Venus or Aphrodite or whichever other god or goddess we encounter if we go to their home armed."

Sean nodded reluctantly. "You're probably right. I don't suppose a sword or arrow would do much damage to a god anyway."

"True." Mike agreed ruefully. "There aren't any other dangers we might encounter, though, are there?" he asked worriedly.

Sean shook his head. "No, we'll be arriving on Mt. Olympus itself. There shouldn't be anything there but the gods and goddesses. We should be ready for a quick retreat though, they're known for being unpredictable." Sean replied.

"Are we sure we're ready for this?" Mike asked, looking at Sean and Jill in turn. Sean shrugged, he'd already expressed his concern.

"I don't think the goddess of love and beauty is going to harm us, and the place Sean marked should take us right to her. We should be safe enough, especially with Sean ready to portal us out on a moment's notice." Jill replied, trying to project confidence and being fairly successful.

Sean took a deep breath and said, "Okay, let's get this over with then." He opened the book to the marked section and began reading. Mike and Jill moved closer to him so they could go through the portal quicker. The portal formed quickly and expanded to door size. With an audible gulp Sean stepped through, followed closely by his friends.

Once through the portal Sean closed it so he could open another wherever they might need it. "Stay close, just in case." He cautioned. The others nodded.

They found themselves in a clearing surrounded by trees. There was a natural spring near the center and a beautiful woman with her back to them was just finishing redressing from a dip in the spring when they arrived. Her wet hair dried as she turned to look at them. "Mortals, here?" she murmured dulcetly.

"Um, excuse me, but we were wondering if you could help us…" Jill began, only to be cut off by a screech from the woman.

"Do not speak, mortal!" she screeched. "This is Mt. Olympus, home of the gods! You do not belong here! I am Venus, and I command you to leave at once!" she demanded.

Sean backed away fearfully, which put some distance between himself and his friends. "Please, our friend needs your help…" Jill tried again.

"If you will not leave you will taste my curse!" Venus screamed. Her hands began to glow a blood red color and she began to raise them towards Jill.

"Run!" Sean screamed, opening a portal right behind his friends. Mike shoved Jill through while Sean ran to join them.

Venus pointed her glowing hands at Mike and a blast of energy shot out from them. "NO!!" Sean screamed, and jumped in front of Mike. The blast hit him full in the chest and drove him back into Mike. He felt every nerve in his body burning, and then nothing.

Greek vs. Roman

Its very good reading, but it has just one little flaw - Venus was goddess of ancient Rome, the Aphrodite was ancient Greeks goddess of love and beauty.
Go on!
Robin

The book is on both Greek

The book is on both Greek and Roman gods. Roman gods were also supposed to live on Mt. Olympus. I looked it up, really! ;)

Thanks Robin!

Jupiter = Zeus

The name Jupiter is derived from Zeu Pater, "Father Zeus." Indeed, Deus, from which we derive the Latin word for God and countless words for divinities and divas, originated in the prehistoric sky god, which gave us Tyr (The Nordic version of Zeus). The Romans easily saw their own Pantheon in the religions of their European neighbours, and they were quite right to think so. All these Gods and Goddesses share a common divinity originating somewhere around 4000 BCE, the trailing end of the Stone Age and the beginning of metallurgy, just around the time the world is supposed to have wound itself up in the Bible.

That agrees nicely with what

That agrees nicely with what I read when I was checking on where the Roman gods would be. As I understand it, the Romans assimilated a lot of ideas from ancient Greece and other countries, while retaining their own religion at its core. So they had gods very similar to the Greeks other than name, but they were still different, too. But they still lived on Mt. Olympus, which was convenient for me! ;)

I agree

I think Sean is about to lose his problem with gay men chasing him. Unfortunately, the harassment at work is going to change character and get worse! Time to quit! Impossible to tell for sure until we know the details. One thing is for sure. Mike really owes Sean for this one! Talk about taking a bullet for a friend! Wow.

Hugs!

Yeah, I don't think whoever

Yeah, I don't think whoever coined that phrase was thinking about blood red energy blasts from gods! ;)

Well, Now!

We have a very good idea about the curse, now. But will she reverse it?

Cursed

Short and focused. I suspect Jill's portrait is of Sean cursed. Now that s/he's cursed, what about Sean's girlfriend?

I'm glad his power helped him deal with the a**h***s at work. Can it help him now s/he is cursed?

What's in a name? Aphroditie or Venus by any other name is still the Goddess of Love. Today most people either use the names interchangeably or refer to Venus. I guess Venus has better PR people. Besides "Venus Cursed" sounds much better than "Aphrodite cursed".

I love how you are developing the story. Keep writing.

Exactly!

My first inclination was to use Aphrodite, but I couldn't work that into the name. Venus, on the other hand, sounds perfect!

Thank you Trish-Ann!

Now I know where the title came from.

*grins*

Should be interesting to see what shape this curse takes in the next chapter or so. They should have gone to a temple and petitioned Venus instead of going to Mount Olympus. Oh, well, live and learn. Even if one is cursed from the learning.

Hind sight, and all that,

Hind sight, and all that, right? ;)

I thought

that the first thing the god or goddess they encountered would do would be to ask, "how did you mortals get here?" and then upon finding out that Sean has the power to travel through time/space/dimensions or whatever, they would consider him and respect him as another god of some kind. Guess not, as Venus apparently subscribes to the old "shoot first and ask questions later!" method. I bet I know what Jill's portrait is, nah nah nah na naaah nah... :p Thanks for another great chapter. :)

I did consider that, but

I did consider that, but reasonable she isn't! ;)

A question on portals.

Sean can open portals through time, space and different dimensions to get to the places of his desire. Is there anything stopping him from using portals as valid means of near-instantaneus transportation in real world?

I mean, other than the fact he won't be himself after this chapter ~_^

A couple pints to ponder ... points

If he has just been Venus Cursed then why all the weirdness at work and the portals?

There is something odd in Sean's background I suspect.

Is he a descendent of Venus, a descendant of a long forgotten mostly human offspring? Frankly from my long ago reading of the Greco-Roman gods Athena might have been a safer choice, love is a volatile emotion and Venus is love and beauty perfected. They disturbed her in the bath, of course she'd be pissed.

Since the curse was intended for a man -- odd that, Jill was the one talking but then she was a pissed off goddess -- given Venuses powers it likely would be intended to make him a beautiful woman but leave his male *self* intact or to make him a an effeminate pretty man. But if the guys at work are seeing Sean as increasingly effeminate already, something has already been turning him female. Thus the curse may prove a boon particularly so if Venus -- fickle goddess that she is --has a conscious and regrets harming a brave soul -- he did leap in front of her blast. Plus he maybe soon she did transport them to Olympus, as other's said, a god/goddess-like power.

Still want to know the distant girlfriend's role. An innocent or deeply involved? Did she trigger the portal powers and changes? Is she a witch and somehow changed him into someone like her. IE she loves him but prefers women so makes him a witch too?

Or am I nuts?

John in Wauwatosa

John in Wauwatosa

Your nuttiness notwithstanding,

There is a possibility of a predestination paradox, IF my assumption about Sean being able to travel timespace of his own world is correct. He may be his own descendant, and the curse was meant to haunt the bloodline and not the person.

I'm going to partially

I'm going to partially answer this one, by saying that I don't believe in paradox. To my way of thinking, if one can actually travel through time, any changes that one makes would create a new timeline. So, if you then went forward in time, you'd be in an entirely new universe! Nothing else really makes sense to me. Whether Sean can actually travel through time, though, you'll have to wait and see! ;)

That has

been bothering me too! We have a number of odd things going on here. One, Sean can open up portals. Apparently to fictional settings but potentially to anywhere he can imagine. Two, he is seen as effeminate by some almost as if he has a feminine aura. My best guess given he is being chased by gay men. (Male but feminine vibes) Three, Jill's painting that she is keeping very closed mouthed about, and it was HER suggestion to go to Venus. Fourth, we are all assuming that Sean will be transformed by Venus into a woman. I checked and couldn't find any examples of Venus/Aphrodite doing the transformation thing to anyone with the exception of Galatea, a statue crafted by Pygmalion, transformed into a living woman. Of course the author may use any artistic license they desire! Many of the Greek gods were shoot first and could not be bothered with questions. Fifth, we have to assume that whatever the source of Sean's power, he is still mortal given Venus's declaration, "Mortals, here?" Sixth, After re-reading this it seems Jill was Venus's target, but Mike pushed her into the portal, and then Sean threw himself in front of the "blast of energy." Seventh, Mike and Sean's girl friend appears totally normal humans. Yes I'm excluding Jill!(Artists in ancient times were thought to be god touched. Even today it is cliche to think of eccentric and artistic going hand in hand.)

I'm not sure where this leaves us! A google search reveals Venus's curse is a STD. Ugh! Somehow I just don't think that is what our dear author has in mind! :)

Great stuff Saless!

Hugs!

grover

LOL!

Yeah, you don't have to worry about the curse being an STD, that's just too cruel! And you're right, Jill was the initial target. There are a lot of things going on in the background that are still hidden. They'll be revealed in time, though, I swear! ;)

Thanks grover!

when your late commenting is there's not much to say that's fresh, so i'll just content myself with saying... Saless this is one top story! .. And i hope Sean likes whatever has happened to him!

It's Jill's fault

Venus: "Do Not Speak!"

Jill: "Please..."

Venus: ZAP!!!

Some people just don't know when to shut up.

Hint: When a pissed-off goddess tells you to shut up and leave, it's a good idea to shut up and leave.

So, who's idea was this in the first place?

Oh yeah.

Don't be too hard on her

Sean did agree to go, after all! Still, good advice. ;)
