Part 8

We went through to the lounge where we found Guptar sitting at his desk with a notepad open in front of him. He was looking at his tablet and writing names. When we walked in he looked up and said “Now look what you girls have done; all these people suddenly want to talk to me. I will have to start with the local MP and Mayor first and the rest will have to wait.”

Here is a little story that popped into my head as I was about to go to sleep the other night.

“Hello”

“Oh! Hello yourself.”

“Not what I would call a happy party, Is it? I’m Henry, by the way.”

“No, it’s not. I suppose it must be because we all think it may be the last we have. I’m - Susan.”

“Well, Susan, you should not be standing there, on your own, without a drink. Here, I brought you one over. Drink and be merry, I say.”

For much of the weekend she wondered why she agreed to go to the party with Peter. She was far too new to girldom to think about boys but then realised that she had never really thought about girls in the way other boys did.

Round Two was, of course, outside on the long gun range. As we left the building the range officer gave a trooper the bundle of targets and told him to start a file for Major Jackson and then tidy up in the range.

That nights’ work seemed like a dream for Bree. All he could think of was that the rest of the guys had been thinking he was a girl the whole time he had been working with them. That explained why they were so kind to him, and even why he had caught Peter looking at him at odd times.

I was the only passenger on the plane and the only others were the two pilots. It did not take long for us to get permission to take off and we did it on full power, it felt very impressive. We flew south and eventually circled a massive military base. When we landed the heat was oppressive, especially for someone who had dressed for a Detroit day.

That day Bruce found out something that all afternoon shift workers know – there is nothing to watch on daytime television. He realised that he would need to fill his day with some productive activities or else go mad.

Monday morning I was up and dressed for the office, my hair in a pony-tail and my takings from Saturday in my back pack. As I left my room Balnoor was walking towards me. “Did you see that girl who was here yesterday” he asked “she looked lost but I looked back as I walked away and she was getting into a flash car.”

On the Tuesday Bruce was easily on time and Bree was clocked in before 7.30. With Brucey, Geoff and Bill he again went to the unloading dock where he was surprised at the empty spaces where they had filled up with yesterdays’ unloading.

Part 3

On the way he gave me a run down on who I would be meeting this afternoon. “First” he said “there is the band. There is Husnia, Jenianna, Kajari and Tavleen. They are all in their twenties and you should fit in well. Then there will be my daughter Grette, well named as she is a pearl among the stones. My wife is Birgitta and my mother is Aganee. Her name means fire and it does fit well as she can turn the blowtorch on us with her scorn if we do wrong.”

Of course, we didn’t just knock on doors and ask if there was a strange person living there. We used drones from a distance to see the normal days for each house. We were able to eliminate about forty this way, the residents being larger groups were seen together and touching.

There are days when you want to leap out of bed in the morning and attack the day with all the vigour you have. I don’t get many of these days lately. There are other days where you really should have stayed in bed and I had just had a week’s worth of those.

She walked straight up to Gerry and flung her arms around his neck and gave him a long kiss which he quickly responded to by the way his stance changed. She almost dragged him off to the caravan. I would have said that she led him by his nose but I don’t think that it was his nose that she was thinking of. I just stood next to Lockie and we watched it all happen.

As we moved from town to town I settled into my life as a girl. My injuries had healed and Jenny had been teaching me the finer points of girl-dom. The tigers had become very friendly with everyone and their previous minder was happy to leave me to look after them.

Next morning I was up and dressed in the nightie and robe while I got breakfast for us. My father came down with a hold-all that he used when he was sent further away on a road job. He told me that he did not expect to be back until Friday and I pretended to be upset at being left alone.

I did not have what they call a happy childhood. My father was a drunkard and a bully and I grew up spending a lot of time hiding in, or sometimes under, my bed. He was a road-worker and played as hard as he worked, leaving my mother and me to scrape along as best we could.

My first priority was to get the whole cast up to speed with a three week stint in New York. I was surprised that all of my stars were happy with it as they had all had dreams of appearing on stage as genuine actresses when they were young, rather than being pop stars. Greg was more than happy and said that it was the idea of change that kept him alive.

Kevins’ list of ports had been very sparse. It seems that Drake never bothered to describe the odd places he stopped at to replenish. All of his exploits seemed to happen ‘off the coast of’ and the only certain landings were in the San Francisco Bay, which he claimed for the Queen and called ‘New Albion’, and the Molucca Islands (otherwise known as the Spice Islands).

When everyone gathered for lunch I found Simon and just said “Damn you and your crazy ideas, you have just made me lose another year of my life!” He laughed and asked me what I had thought of and I just said “The life and times of Richard Reece with Drake.”

After we had all gone down to the dressing rooms and change back into normal clothes, Lucy took charge of the stage gear for cleaning and transporting to New York. I went to see each of our stars and told them that we would get together in a week Friday at their hotel in New York and to enjoy their break. I told them to watch the Seattle show on the weekend as it was a bit different.

The next day we got the full band back in, staying in the studio. We set it up as it would be on stage and worked on the six solo acts, with the choir now standing back beside the band, half on each side. I must say that our stars were very good and looked good as well in their stage gear.

I now had time to sit down and write ‘One Night in June’ for the band, Greg, five stars and two choirs. This would be the biggest hurdle to overcome. After about a week at getting a basic idea sorted, I rang Sarah and asked if she knew of a local composer who could help me with it and she gave me a name to contact.

In New York we had a conference with Simon and his CEO about the TV show. One of the networks was interested and we made an appointment to go and see them. When we got to their office it was almost filled with suited types with lots of gold jewellery. I immediately asked how many TV executives it needs to change a light bulb.

Chapter Two

When I woke up again I took several minutes to get used to my surroundings as all I could hear was the morning chorus. I also had a rush of memories of growing up as a girl in Phoenix and the people I knew. I now remembered my father, a building consultant, and my mother and her accountancy business.
