Yes it can

But it’s not in the best interests of big corporations to do so.

And the other question is why your details were on an insecure database with your landlord?

If it is a small landlord

If it is a small landlord (perhaps just a single property) rather than a big company, it might not be a database, just stored emails from the tenants.

It doesn't matter if...

The information is on a secure computer, they will still get to it.
Just look at the Telephone companies in Australia that got hacked, they were protected up the wahzoo and they still got all that info onto the Dark web.

only

if the information is connected to the web - secure means no web connection and for stuff like tenants information there is no need to be connected to the www.

No Secrets

Now days I just assume that everyone knows everything about everyone else.

Pretty close to it

A lot of people who hold a security clearance had their details lost to the Chinese during the Office of Management and Budget hack. Also, the National Public Data (a data aggregation company) hack also leaked my data ... again.

I just assume my data is out there like you do consequently.

However, given my weird Asian name, it is too memorable and doing identity theft with it is less desireable I think.

I just hope it stays that way.

Your info is already out there.

Did you not hear about the massive hack that contained info on almost everyone in the US, Canada, and the UK at the bare minimum?
Hackers got into the database held by a company that did background checks for companies and private investigators. with all the data brokers out there allowed to sell and trade your information at will it is kind of pointless to panic at every data breach you hear about. As long as they did not get your bank info you are mostly ok as your government ID information is pretty much already out there like Social Security numbers, Passport Numbers, Drivers License Number, etc...
