Well, bad news about the apartment search. we had to cancel the walkthrough because of a blizzard, and since then, despite me phoning the man who was supposed to lead us through the place several times, he has not let us know if we can reschedule.

I've come to the conclusion he got a renter for it, and isn't bothering to even tell us.

If that wasn't enough fun, the last two days I have been dealing with nasty memories, flashbacks, and nightmares related to the abuse I suffered as a kid.

Hugs and prayers appreciated.

Big ones. Love ya, Dot!

Snow, in Canada. I ask you — what’s this world coming to? ;-)

Sad. Keep trying. It's a "numbers game". like ...

... a job hunt.

Meanwhile, "keep on swinging". Of course nearly all your 'swinging' will miss. But you only need to hit once. [2]

I suggest this:
Keep on contacting other landlords/apartment managers. Even if they open with "nothing available" tell them why you are looking:

"A recent minor fire elsewhere in our current building scared me because it made me realize my "elderly Mom" [1] could not have made it down more than (pick a small number, like zero/1/2) flights of stairs. And her building has 14 flights of stairs between her and safety."

"So please keep us in mind. My number is: xxx-xxx. Thanks."

I bumped into a friend who used to manage apartment buildings. We are both USA, so she is understandably clueless about relevant Canadian law. Her suggestion was a pro-bono lawyer.

That shook loose my cobwebs:
= Look for 'renters associations', preferably ones not 'just for' one building, but general ones and see what they might know about. Maybe they have Facebook pages.

= Many cities/counties (should!) have 'Senior', disabled, or special needs services that might help. Even if they can't directly help, they may have leads for you.

= Think about, maybe contact a lawyer who would a tad of pro-bono work, maybe only a phone call of "I (lawyer) hear you have a disabled tenant who needs to be on floor 0/1/2 in case of fire or other building evacuation." NOTE. So long as this does not put you on the building's 'evict first' list. Color me paranoid ...

Meanwhile, at my end:

"Arugula!!! Aruuuugula!!! Emergency recall! All my Aether drones carrying 'Feel Goods' meant for the land-lord. New mission. Re-target Dorothy and her Mom with those Feel Goods."

Let that land-lord go cuddle his money. In pennies. That he dug out of a blizzard snow-bank. Wearing only his summer pajamas
...

Rip! Rip! Rip! Sigh, those were the sounds of both my Humanist and Buddhist cards getting shredded ... Inhumane thought and Wrong Speech. I'm just >so< coming back as a cockroach ...

[1] Sorry Mom - but are not all who are older than us, our elders?

[2] "Job hunt" analogy. A mass hiring event has a room with 20 employers (land-lords) and 20 job-seekers (future tenants). Everybody interviews (calls) everybody. By magic, everybody gets a job (apartment).

But here's the numbers: In that room, there were 20 'yeses' (hired) >and 380 'nos'<. You just had your first 'no', only 379 to go. Naahhh. It won't be that bad.

PS: While writing this, my clinic called to reschedule a routine test. Seems Chicago-land has maybe 30 cm/12" of (blizzard?) snow coming at us.

Me? I'll be 70 this March and I have cow valve sewn into my heart ... But, a very good friend connected me to a plowing service.

Sending love

The struggle with past abuse is a difficult one. It saddens me that so many of us are subjected to it.

Another thought re: not-landlord ...

If he was too much of a jerk to

- not reschedule,
- not call you back,
- rent while you were still kind of 'in line' for the place ...

How much of a jerk would he have been when you had any problem ... ?

I had a job offer, letter in-hand ... and the guy who wanted me called and said his boss (maybe a VP, or part owner) was against hiring me ... I thought for a moment. 'Any new job is tough.' How much tougher would it be with my guy's boss looking for my mistakes and problems ... ? 'Perfect' on my part might not have been good enough for Big Boss.

In D&D terms, I think you have, in fact, just "rolled a really Big Save'. I'm seeing three lucky 'sevens' on 3 10-sided dice ...

Wait. This just in: My local corner-store Oracle just called me: "We don't always give people what they want or what they ask for. We (Oracles) sometimes give them what they need."
