I've got my final in Music Theory today so I have to go out and walk across campus in the rain and I have a terrible cold. I'm not looking forward to this. I'm going to stock up on hot chocolate and o.j. before I leave.

Aced the final :)
Missed half a point on one minor bit of analysis but got back a full point for a very clever bit I did extra. Score 100.5 out of 100. :) We chose to do double analysis and no dictation, so I was SAFE! LOL.

Strange examination ...
... if it's possible to get more than full marks but, hey, well done you for achieving it! So can we we expect a sound module on the site soon so we can all benefit from your musical erudition? A tone poem, say, called Life and Gender Transformation which will blow us all away :) (with apologies to R Strauss)
When I had piano lessons as a pre-teen the elementary theory was easy - I just couldn't play the damn piano so I gave up :( I admire and envy those who, like you, persevered.
Looks like the cold didn't affect you too much but hope you get well soon anyway.

Extra point
The extra point was a wrinkle of analysis that was BETTER than what the instructor had intended. That's why the extra. It involved indicating two different completely accurate but divergent ways of analyzing the same chord progression and both ways had been covered in class. If I had just done the one that he hadn't thought of, he would have just given me full credit, but I showed that both ways were legitimate alternates.
Giving extra points for outwitting the instructor is a fine American tradition. :) I once got 110% on a History final which was MUCH harder to do. (I wrote two extra analytic essay questions myself and answered them, based on course material.)

But Dictation is SO Much Fun!!
Glad to hear you did well! Congratulations. Don't even know why I'm asking other than curiosity, but does your program have Ear Training as a separate class, or is it integrated into Theory? I knew quite a few who would have gotten A's were it not for the inclusion of Ear Training and Sight Singing. Then my school separated the two...after I had already finished, of course! :)

Yes, Ear Training is part of Theory
And Sight Singing. We just didn't do that much of either this semester so the instructor gave us the choice. Twice as much analysis or a two part test. He knows were all pretty good at intervals and chords but rhythms did not get covered very well in the ear training so dictation would have been easy for the accomplished musicians and very difficult for us fumbling beginners.

Hi Erin. I have found that Chinese hot and sour soup works a wonder for colds and sinus problems. And it is soooo warm and good. Get better soon. CaroL
