The same applies to the video wars. When Sony developed Betamax, they thought the primary use for VCRs would be time shifting, i.e. recording a show you couldn't be home to watch. They felt there would be no market for pre-recorded movies, so consequently when it was released, Betamx was only a one-hour tape. It turned out people did want pre-recorded content, however, and VHS with its longer capacity tapes was there to fill that need. And just what drove the sales of VHS? It was largely small rental outlets, the forerunners of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery, that were almost exclusively adult oriented. The adult movie industry has always been quick to latch onto new technology, like DVDs. How many of us have DVD players that support multiple camera angles? I do, but there are no mainstream movies that I know of that support this feature -- lot of pornographic movies do, however.
