I've had a belated realization regarding healing and now feel somewhat foolish for not realizing it before.
I have a very close friend who has gone on a self righteous rant about "50 Shades of Grey". I doubt that she has read the books or intends to see the movie. I have read the books and plan to see the movie but do not intend to tell her that.
She sees the story as vile pornography, and I see it as a rather spicy romance. It is not for masturbation because I have NO sex impulses what so ever. In my younger years, I would have felt privileged to be the subject of a Dom's attentions but that never happened.
Now I am a bit embarrassed that something I had seen as rather innocent should not be shared with Muggles. Hmmm

50 shades
I've not read it yet, but my mom has... she thought it was over hyped but still very good. Frankly i was amazed she even read it, she's not exactly a passionate woman and has very traditional views of sex. If she can read and enjoy it i'm sure your friend can too if she'd just take the oppertunity to give it a fair chance.
Fifty Shades Of Shinola
I haven't read the book either, though I've seen extracts. If they're representative of the author's style - and I have every reason to believe that they are - then I can honestly say that the vast majority of contributors to this site are more talented than she is. I know I am. If I used the phrase 'his tongue invaded my mouth' once I'd look for a way to improve it. If I used it eleven times in the same story I'd be bloody ashamed of myself.
The wild horses have not yet been foaled that could drag me to this movie. It's not the subject matter, it's the fact that it was made at all.
This is crapola, this is Shinola.

His tongue invaded my mouth....
...the sinister presence of numbness from a tooth extraction acted in concert with his invasion as an oral fifth column and I was left defenseless. Excerpted from Fifty Shades of Dental Floss

I'll Have A Go At That
He exploited the soreness of my Quisling sockets with merciless cynicism. They surrendered with barely a token effort to form a viable resistance movement. His tongue licked away the memory of the antiseptic wash from my taste buds, replacing its dictatorship with an entirely new regime.
This is easy! Where's our multi-million dollar deal?
How it relates to women
I've talked to lots of women about the books. I guess you did not understand that this thread was not about the author's writing skill but the way it connected with so many women, and myself in such a primal way.
Two things...
(Disclaimer: I haven't read the books and don't plan to read them or see the movie.)
First, check out Erica Moen's thoughts on the books over at her comic strip, "Oh Joy Sex Toy" (NSFW). Without having read the books myself, I understand and agree with her position -- I'm fine with people reading them as erotica, but I hope people understand that they do not portray a BDSM relationship, they portray an abusive one.
First-and-a-half, just in general check out "Oh Joy Sex Toy", by your self or (even better) with a partner. It's a lot of fun and very educational. It starts as mostly toy reviews, but it quickly branches into other sex-ed topics as well.
Second, if someone reading this is looking for a movie that does portray an actual, positive, consensual BDSM relationship, check out "Secretary". That one I can vouch for personally.
