Well, I picked up my daughter today, and she was all excited about learning how to make a cake in her cooking class.
I said, "If only you were as pumped about learning multiplication"
She replied, "If math was edible, maybe I would."

Yes, one needs math to bake!
Yes, one needs math to bake! Yoi've got unit conversions, ratios, cooking times, etc. It's a great opportunity to demonstrate the use of math.

When I was in school I got blessed with a teacher that showed me some tricks that made math fun. I still remember a few of them even after all these years.
anything times 11 is the same number twice. Anything times 10 is the same number plus a zero.
a number times 9 is a number below and another number that equals nine when added. Ie 9 x3 = 27 which is the number under 3 2 plus 7 equals nine.
any number times 5 is either a number with 5 in it or a 10.
Like I said they made math fun and it went from really hard to easy just like that. Obviously there is limits to the tricks but it sure helped.
