That was the verdict of a co-worker, adding that trying to go back to being male would be "living a lie" for me.

So why is that a big deal? The co-worker in question is a high-functioning autistic person and pretty much incapable of lying, so that's her true opinion, not because she wants to make me feel good or anything.

Nice to get that kind of recognition, you know?

Great news, and an honest assessment. ASD types can be quite perceptive -- a whole lot more than many give them credit for. It comes from having to work so hard to pick up what is instinctive to others.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume they have to work for it...

I honestly think ASD types actually are EXTREMELY perceptive, naturally. Even at a very young age. For some, I think it's that they pick up too much to handle it all and just run away into a shell.

Which is why I think people used to think I was ASD... I lived in a shell. Mine was just constructed to protect me for a different reason. Actually, a lot of people STILL think I'm an extremely high-functioning aspy... *eyeroll*

Some ASD very well could be that they have a difficult time picking up on subvocal cues... But I believe this to be more a minority than a rule. A lot of them I think just don't know what to do with all the information they're picking up.

Overly perceptive - not only ASD

The same over perceptiveness of stimuli seems to be the problem for people with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), where the prioritising filter for incomming stimuli is not working correctly. As a result they become overwhelmed and start to impulsively lash out at those that suround them.

More often than not, just reducing the amount of stimuli from the environment helps to improve the concentration. And that is one of the reasons that kids with ADD do so bad in school, because they can't find a refuge in the wide open classrooms.
