That was the opinion of a little girl in my neighborhood when she saw me dressed for work - black slacks, black top, pony tail and earrings.
Sigh. I guess I still have a way to go before I pass totally ....

I don't know the kid but that could easily be a problem in your head and nothing to do with passing. Little kids don't see the world the same.

I am extremely passable now but there will always, always be rough edges early in living full-time.
The rule of thumb is that it can take up to 5 years before blending becomes relative effortless and unlikely to be read if one is reasonably physically passable and puts ones' mind to it.

Seriously, for a kid young enough to simply say "you look funny" it could mean any number of things, a lot of people probably look funny to her.
That could have meant almost anything.
Next time, ask. Don't walk away and assume you know what it meant.
Chances are that if you challenged her, she would have said she didn't know why she thought you "looked funny".
Having no evidence to go on is all the more reason to not assume.
Some thoughts about this

I have thought about this for a long time, and I doubt that you can do much about it. I think this is partly caused by childrens inability to see our external signals as dressing or hairstyle a.s.o. to really figure out the gender of the persons that they meet. I think they do see their mothers as their closest "person" and relate others accordingly. The word for their closest family like daddy , mom, a.s.o. probably have no gender meaning, they are just something we try to teach them instead of poper names. So what they have to learn is the body-language of the persons they see most of their timr as toddlers. Slowly they start to find differences in the body-language of maels and females. Then comes the learning that male can have different names. But in the background they still have the skill to read the body-language of new persons, and that is why they see MtF as a person with a male body-language, regardles how we dress or use make-up, cut our hair. I am not really sure at which age they start to "read" those external signals and sort out our gender from the "picture" they see and not from our body-language. Perhaps not until they get as old as they start to get aware of their own gender. About the time they can figure out if there gender is in accordance with their phenotype. At age 4 to 5 when we have the first reports about "primary transsexualism". The only way to handle it is to smile and show that their conflicting impressiosn will not harm them.

More seriously, it's not the worst comment Dorothy. She never mentioned anything about gender so it could have been a multitude of things. Try not to read too much into one comment. My own nephew once said I looked funny and when I paranoidly asked why he pointed out my hair was sticking up at the back. I literrally did look funny. :-)
Try focus on the positives. If that was the only problem you had that day then it was a pretty good day surely?

Though add that you should've tried your best to sound nonchalant about it when you asked

Chances are it was something completely innocent like forgetting to zip something, or your hair being not completely in the ponytail or...
Though I don't completely agree with Ginnie... I suppose that some of us may have very strong male body language problems, but others of us slip quite easily into very feminine modes. And even if you DON'T slip into them readily, it's really something you ought consider to work on in that case. You don't want to go over-the-top flamboyant with it either of course, but there's certain subtle things that you can do to gradually retrain yourself.
