Well, I just got a phone call for an interview on Monday. Now, though, I have a moral dilemma. Do I mention my trans status and risk not getting hired? Or do I lie, and have to live with that?

The Job Is the Thing

I have a feeling that the attitude up your way is a bit better than down here. You might test he waters when it comes time for you to ask questions. There should be that opportunity. How are you going to present yourself? If They don't have any problems with LGBT, tell them the truth. If they do have problems, you don't want to work there anyway. That would just create too much conflict for you, and that is the last thing you need.

If they have a problem with it, you don't want to work with them anyway.

Better question is

Have you done the legal name change yet and transitioned? Are you on HRT and it's going to show soon? That is what you have to consider most.

put food on the table first

First, get the job. Don't risk putting up any barriers to getting hired.

Second, work there for a while, Decide if you like it there. Give them plenty of reason to like you.

Third, after you have been there for a while, PRIVATELY inquire with HR about transitioning. Test the ice without putting your full weight on it.

Interviews are two way streets

You should ask questions about LGBT issues. Interviewing is also about "Do I want to work for you?"

Once you know more the you will have a better grasp on "IS IT SAFE!!!?"

Perhaps you can do some research about the company. Is this a large regional or nationwide company, that likely has a thought out and published HR policy. If so you might try and appear as Dorothy.

If it is a small local establishment that may not have thought out policies, it may be a risk.

Is it in an industry where they are likely to be unfriendly to a TG/TS? Or an industry that is more liberal?

Is this a job where you will have face to face client contact? If so do you pass easily? if not, you are done for before you begin.

Two other thoughts. How desperate are you for any job? Do you offer the company something no one (or few) applicants can deliver?

If you need the job that badly, and you would be one of many applicants, perhaps it is not worth the risk.
