Well, a little while back, I went to get an MRI on my brain. The site of the tumor I had removed about 3 years ago.

Talked to my neurosurgeon yesterday, and there's no new growth of the remain of the tumor. Just a little bit of thickening in the dura (the membrane that surrounds the brain) where the tumor was.

I hate having to get an MRI. A cat scan is fine, but the tube you go into in an MRI is so stinking tiny! Ugh!

MRIs are fine except when the tech has to inject something -- often gadolinium.

nurses do injections and/or draw blood all the time. they're good at it.

techs who take blood samples do it all the time. they're good at it.

MRI techs don't do it much at all so they don't get much practice. i often leave with band-aids up and down both arms.

the MRI? not so bad. ten band-aids? that part kinda sucks.

MRI woes

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Nearly 20 years ago, I fell while on a ladder. I broke my right knee, clipped a dime sized piece of the bone on my left elbow (which BTW had 30% of the tendons that straighten my arm) and fractured something in my right wrist. That last fracture wouldn't show up on an X-ray or CAT scan, so it was off to the MRI. I can see why people with closet phobia would have a problem and require an open MRI. Anyway, though they took a full body scan, the were primarily interested in my wrist so that put some kind of gadget over that was suppose to do something to enhance what they saw there. I thought I was staying still as instructed, but the tech hollered that I should quit twitching my ankle.

As a side light, the doctor showed me on the results of the MRI that I had arthritis all through my body, including a spot in my head that explains the small permanent lump on my head about the size off a quarter.

Bone spur MRI

I have a bone spur in my left elbow and needed an MRI. They put my arm in such an awkward position that when I came out of the machine, I wasn't sure I'd be able to drive home.

They're not so bad.

I'm a volunteer for the UK Biobank which collects anonymised data to be used for medical research. I attended a day project at their HQ in Stockport which included several MRI scans. It was noisy but not a real problem - in fact I fell asleep during one of them. I suppose there was no anxiety as I'm healthy and had the added advantage that if they did spot something out of the ordinary they'd contact my GP. Otherwise, you get no feedback except thanks and a warm, smug glow for being a do-gooder :)

MRI

I had one in 2012 and they found a Cyst that was 6mm then. (Both with and without dye) Since, I've had no symptoms of it acting up. They say that my age of 75 it is not advisable to try to do anything with it. My nurse friend says that they would either go in through my nose or my eye orbit. Just talking about it gives me the heebie jeebies.
