I found a possible helper for when I struggling with bad memories - humor.

After a conversation on bulling here on Facebook, I went to work and started struggling with PTSD. Fortunately, I had help - a very funny book that made me giggle several times reading it.

So by half-way through the night, I was starting to feel better.

Anybody else have something that helps them get through PTSD moments?

humour does work

I suffer with two triggers of PTSD that can be very random sometimes and yes humour is a good response. Also my teddy bears i carry one in my computer satchel and when i start to trigger i stroke it as there are good memories to it and the large one i cuddle upto at night to keep the night terrors and PTSD triggered dreams aside. Alot of it is i think redirecting the pathways at the start of the triggered episode

hugs

to hug is to be and to be is to be hugged

view the world through the eyes of a child and relearn the wonder and love

I'm stubborn and somewhat snotty

I'm telling you that Dialectical Behavior Therapy is the business. Psychologist Marsha M. Linehan put it all together and I think she did that during her time at University of Vancouver, Canada. So, any book on it that you find with her name on it is worth a look.

One of the ways to derail the effects of trauma is to laugh, laugh a lot. I won't try to explain the Neurological mechanism involved. In 2005, I had the most severe case of PTSD that my Phd Psychologist had ever seen. That's saying a lot for a Veterans Administration Hospital. Those who have gotten to know me can tell you what a basket case I used to be.

If I thought that PTSD was not mostly curable, I would just give up and end it. You have to become your own best friend. You have the right to set boundaries; to not permit people to hurt you, especially after you have asked them to stop. You have the right to terminate relationships that suck and are hurtful to you.

There is a neat little book called "Co-dependent No More", read it. Your public library should have it. Some stores should have it. It is only about 100 pages. In the beginning there is a little test. I flunked it, though it took another 20 years to end the relationship that was killing me, and in the end, my wife and family did me the favor of throwing me out. They are such a bunch of nutter fundies that they completely forgot what Jesus Christ taught.

If you can't afford a couple books, PM me and I will find them and send them to you.

NO matter what a psych person tells you, in the end you have to run your life and no one can do it for you.

Merry Christmas
