Well
I know mine often do that as well.

That Means...
... that you're doing something right.

Characters can be 'demanding' ...
Let it happen, and "ride" it.
In the preface to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Masterharper_of_Pern, Author Anne McCaffrey says that the character of the Master Harper put himself forward, practically demanding that his story be told.
So she did, giving us fans of Pern 431 pages of reading pleasure.
Welcome to my world
I find that when the characters in my stories do that, the stories tend to write themselves and turn out better because of it. Sometimes it's a little like having a tiger by the tail. Your just a long for the ride and you don't dare let loose.
Can't wait to see how they do with what you've started.

I know I've wanted to have my characters
do things and they call into question my sanity.

I don't have that problem
since I take over (as in becoming) the character instead. Well, at least the narrator. So, no conflict between me and my characters.
I have mentioned earlier that this makes me question my sanity at times, considering the nature of some of my characters, They range from mass murderers to the pope (not mutually excluding), from bigots to supermodel (wishful thinking?), from perpetrator to innocent and left out bystander (rather sad).
