Not sure about
But this is a good representation of a game: A Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons Adventure: The Hellfire Club | Netflix Geeked Week.
Different groups will have their own particularities.

Also, a movie.
(I played "Dungeons and Dragons" for a few years.) The movie Labyrinth (to my mind) has a very good D&D 'feel'. Movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labyrinth. (You''ll need to go the 'disambiguation link, the 'movies' section, and 'disambiguate' for the 1986 film.
Mini-spoiler: Those familiar with M C Escher's "impossible stairs" will like a scene near the end. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascending_and_Descending
D&D
I have never played, so am not positive, but my grandson and crew were into for a while and still raid the odd dungeon. It is played on tabletop like a board game, with dice, but that's as close as it gets. So, if they were following a board trail like in Monopoly or sorry, I would guess no. Of course, they probably have a board version now since I opened my yap.
Table Top Without a Board !
So kind of weird, huh? :p

There are
There are versions with boards but really, they are different things to the make-up-you-own-map-and-maybe-just-imagine-it ones, and much less popular.

D and D?
Could also be Tunnels and Trolls (DnD with out clerics) or even LOTR (Lord Of The Rings) the role playing game, not to mention Steve Jackson’s GURPS (Generic Universal Role Playing System). Lots of choices!

Not to mention
Pathfinder, Champions, GURPS, Traveller and hundreds of others. Just about any major science fiction or fantasy work, whether book or movie, has an RPG devoted to it. I have no idea how many Star Trek, Star Wars, DC, and Marvel RPGs there are, but the answer is probably "more than is needed."
Yes
Yes, the game they are playing is specifically Dungeons and Dragons. They play it several times throughout the series, starting from the very first episode. The monsters in the show are nicknamed by the kids after D&D monsters; Demogorgon, Vecna, Mind Flayer, as well as several monsters named Demodog, Demobat, etc.
The game is mentioned by name a few times as well in the series. They also have the typical debate in the show that was going on around its popularity, in which people thought it was a cultic ritual to summon demons.
