Puzzled. I now have ten chapters of 'Rainbows///' up, and for some reason Chapter 10 is being sorted between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Any ideas, hive mind?

it's why i started using 0 in single digit chapters

computers being a purely logical set up without the perceptions imaginations give to logic will place the double digit starting with 1 above the single digit. This is the curse of binary logic.

to bypass this after it was pointed out to me I use 01,02, etc

It is all down to 'weight'

Right at the bottom of the page where you have previewed the chapter, and close to the save and preview buttons is a field called 'weight'. The default is a weight of 0. Once you get to chapter 10, make the weight 1, chapter 20, 2 etc etc.
I often forget to do this and in most cases, a reader will thankfully mention it.

I thought

Angharad's picture

Weight 0 = 1-10
weight 1= 10-99
weight 2 = 100-999
weight 3 =1000 - 10,000
So far I haven't got beyond 3.

The weights work as Angharad says.

I use 01, 02, ...

Daphne Xu's picture

I use 01, 02, ... for the first nine chapters or parts. That orders them nice and neat.

If I ever go insane and reach 100, I'll use weights then. On the other hand, if I'm insane to begin with and begin a 100+-chapter novel, I'll begin with 001 so that I won't need weights.

I only use weights when titles begin with "The" and "An". Fortunately, I haven't yet confused myself by intermixing "The" and "A" titles.

I'd used roman numerals ...

... for chapter numbers in the first story I'd posted here in BCTS. Using weights helped keep the chapters in order. :)

They have assisted, and thanks to you lot, I now understand 'weight'

Sorting

The numbers are not represented internally as numbers, but as strings, and then sorted accordingly. So the 1st column with number characters is sorted in ascending order (provided the characters in front of them are all equal). Then if there is more than one number character of the same type (1 in this case) in the 1st number character column then the rows containing them are sorted using the character column after the 1st number character column. So in this case there are "1 ", "10 " and "2 ". And in the ASCII table " " is placed before "0" (or " " has a lower ASCII code than "0"). So therefore 1 is sorted before 10.

You caught yourself out!

Your other writings have all had so many parts with double-digit chapter numbers. Those were self-sorting because their alphabetic "value" sorted to the same sequence as the intended numeric one!
When I didn't see the follow-on episode at its the end after refreshing the most recent chapter I had read, I simply clicked on the new one from the BCTS new postings list, trusting that it would get sorted in due course (as it has!)
