My thoughts are with you and your family Dot. I know how hard it can be waiting on something like that, hoping for good news and fearing the worst. I hope that the surgery goes well and he makes a speedy recovery.

My father and my brother both had prostate cancer and the operation. My father was in the hospital before he called to say he was having surgery. My bother emailed me when he went in for an outpatient procedure called Greenlight laser.

My father's cancer had metastasized and spread to bladder cancer. My brother didn't know his prostate was cancerous until he went for thyroid surgery and in testing after they found markers for cancer. The thyroid tissue was clear of cancer, so the contacted the doctor who treated his prostate and he did have sample that could be tested and it came up cancerous. Funny, not ha-ha, thing is he's on testosterone blockers and estrogen to treat the cancer along with a powerful anti-cancer drug.

I've used the fact that Finasteride is used to treat BPH as an excuse to go ahead and transition, since that's the testosterone blocker I'm compatible with and to include estrogen treatment as well. I maintain that doing this before I exhibit any symptoms is an effort to forestall BPH in me. While Finasteride is not approved for prevention of prostate cancer, it has been tested for that use in a 7 year study. It is approved for treating BPH and male pattern baldness as well as MTF trans people.

The FDA may in the future approve it for prevention. So I may just be on the cutting edge of medical treatment.
