There's no feeling good about a thing like this

My family had a dog when I was growing up; we had to put him down in part because I didn't take care of him nearly as well as I should have. Sounds like your family has done better than I did. Hurts more than anything when you have to put an animal down, no matter why. Hopefully you can hold the dog & pet it as it takes the long sleep. If "Rainbow Bridge" is right, we'll see them again, young and healthy.

A shrink told me that sometimes when our reaction to 'this' trauma/event seems 'out of line' (disproportionate), it's because somehow we didn't deal with a previous similar thing. Or maybe this event is a 'releaser' for the both the previous and this event. ... Similarly, we have heard about or seen people who 'blow up' over a single 'trivial' thing - no, for them it was a long string of similar things ....or some such psycho-babble...
I still get sniffley over Domino-kitty who (I helped) set paw on the Bridge over five years ago... I know she is a surrogate for a lot of other losses ...
