Ok so I went to go pick up my daughter and take her to school cause it was -38 C. On my way there I listened to the traffic report, and apparently, there was a car on fire on one of the main roads. Let me say that again. The car was ON FIRE. I thought to myself, "I bet that person is having the worst day they've had in a while. Because things would have to be going pretty badly before it was 'my car caught on fire in -38 C' bad."

It is funny, that cars do tend...

... to burn more often when it is very cold.
Multitude of reasons. On some older cars some engine oil or fuel seeps through rubber seals onto exhaust while car is cold. Than car gets up to temperature... and you have fire (sometimes, not always).
Another cause is "starter" fluids people use to start engine in extreme cold like ester injected into intake manifold of diesel engines. Those fluids are highly flammable and can cause fires if used without carefully reading directions (who reads directions on a can when it is -38C???).
Also there is some contribution from the higher loads on electric system with all of the defrosters and seat heaters.
"Car on fire" is bad in any weather.
And you have to remember to never leave densely populated areas without a fully charged phone, and someone in another car... There is some good advice if you search for "Winter Emergency Kit for Cars" that gives you advice like on WSDOT site.
Worse thing is that unusual cold outside causes increase in house fires as people tend to do crazy things when normal heating can't keep up with the outside cold... Like three electric heaters plugged into the single 10A outlet... Or having a small bonfire in the middle of the living room...

-38c!

where are you? that is serious cold!

not been much past -10c which with wind chill is pretty horrid - especially riding a bike! But at least most bikes won't burst into flames.

I've always wanted to know, does the light go out when the door closes?
:)

= Give everyone the benefit of the doubt because certainty is a fragile thing that can be shattered by one overlooked fact.

well we dont get much light in the winter, does that count?

For comparison:

-40 C = -40 F, for those of us in the USA.

-40 degrees

Yes, it's special, the only temperature we can agree on. Of course, we can agree it's damned cold.

{I leave a trail of Kudos as I browse the site. Be careful where you step!}

Great idea is described on Wiki...

...regarding Fahrenheit scale.
In the UK in newspapers they tend to use degrees C for low temperatures and degrees F for high temperatures, as 100F is so much hotter than 37C, and 0C feels so much colder than 32F. (in Wiki they used different values, but the same idea)
