I had an inkling last week but it's been confirmed today, my tenure at my employers has ended after a mere 11 years service. Brutal but quick end but no less discombobulating for that.

So I'm in flux atm, not sure what i'll do but I might have to fill some time with scribbles.

Redundancy

shiraz's picture

I'm assuming you're referring to redundancy, in which case the 11 years would soften the blow?

But I wasn't on a great salary to start with so it's not a lot. I do need a regular income for the bills so I will be looking for something but it won't be desperate for a few weeks yet.
I will have more time to devote to the publishing/writing lark and i've a couple of other ideas that involve being self employed. Given my age it's unlikely i'll easily find full time employment so it's a 'watch this space' scenario.

I'm sorry to hear that Maddy.

I'm sorry to hear that Maddy. I hope you get some sort of severance payment or benefits to help while you look for something else.

{I leave a trail of Kudos as I browse the site. Be careful where you step!}

Always difficult

Being RIF'd, laid off, or any other term meaning 'no longer with the company' is difficult, even if you know it is coming.

I suggest take a couple of days and 'cry' about it.

Finding the next job is always a job by itself. Been there, Overcame it

"May you live in Interesting Times" is a promise, not a threat!

bad news :(

Damnit, I hate reading such news like that. I hope you have the connections and recommendations to find a job soon.

I'm told STFU more times in a day than most people get told in a lifetime

I am all too familiar with redundancy

Having experience that 'joy' in 30 years of working, 7 times, a stint of 11 years does not sound too bad to me. But yes, of course it is terrible!.

In the US, they don't let you stay on the dole very long either (6 months, unlike JSA benefits in the uk, which is up to 3 years) and at a small fraction of your regular salary that barely pays for rent and little else, if one is used to a professional salary and/or have a decent apartment.

Sorry misread

I did not read it correctly, JSA does not seem to have a specified time limit that I could quickly find.

Sorry to read that

Sorry to read that, Maddy. Company's nowadays do not value their employees the way they use too, they are just numbers to them.
At least you can sit down and write without having to fit it in around work. but that does not help I know with the cash flow.
Best of luck when looking for a new job.

Best wishes
Sophie

Being let go by an employer is never easy.

MadTech01's picture

I worked for a certain electronics retailer here in the US for almost 5 years their name starts with a B and ends with a Y. watched many faces come and go each year. and then after a car accident I was not able to do the work as I used too, So I was scheduled to work less and less, and then on my Birthday no less I received a notice via UPS over night that I had been terminated. No big explanation nothing said except that I was no longer an employee. I had another job at the time and worked at both, well my income went down after that but when you don't work 60+ houser a week between two jobs yea you are going to have a gap. At least I work closer to 40 each week with my job I had and still have now.

"Cortana is watching you!"

I was 'rightsized' from Compaq in 1999

Used the redundancy (20yrs of service) to pay off the mortgage and start my own business.
Actually earned a lot more £££ over the next 6 years.
Perhaps this is an opportunity to change direction?

Compaq a name I have not heard in some time.

I still live in Houston, I remember all the downsizing. The issue I always had with the HP takeover was what was HP hoping to gain. They overlaped so much in their business models and competed agains each other. I still have an old Compaq Proliant DL350 Tower that has 4 Pentium 3 Generation Xeon Processors. It is not running right now it had to be replaced because SQL was eating it alive. My company I work for did that right befrore Windows Server 2012 Came out. It was a hard working machine that just did not want ti quit. I replaced HDD, Fans, Power Supplies, and added memory. I just need to find a use for the old girl. She was loud and put a lot of heat off, but she did the job longer than any other computer I have had at the office could have. Now we have HP Proliant DL350 rack mounted servers, Now driving by the formerly Compaq Campus, Formerly HP Campus, now HP Enterprise Campus. I now always ask when A comany is buying, merging, or taking over another company is it really all good for the workers or just for the big investors and are job cuts coming big and fast.

One solution is...

One solution to help out a little is for more of your loyal readers to buy more of your published books. I know I am always looking for a new edition of Gaby to buy, and have purchased some of your other works as well. Hopefully, you will get more opportunities to write more and your readers will support that effort.

Doing My Part

waif's picture

I am a first year teacher, aspiring author, and lover of all things Gaby.

I just purchased all four Gaby-San books, despite the tight budget I have to live on.

I hope that helps.

But I do see stories of people who have turned this into an opportunity, to find a change for the better, perhaps to do something they have long put off. I hope you too can do this.

Sympathy!

About all I can offer is sympathy (and the intention to continue to buy every one of your scribblings I can obtain - now waiting for the print copy of Gaby San as I really liked the 4 pdf parts - great writing, as always!).
