Blog About:

Well, I had planned to write a little blog on the fact that Barbie seems to have less trouble making a super-heroine aimed at kids than either Marvel or DC comics do, but I think I should talk about some more serious stuff instead.

Anybody who knows me probably knows I struggle with self care a lot.

Not to put too fine a point on it, I suck at looking after myself.

So today, I decided to see how I could change that, and I took the little waterproof radio my sister-in-law gave me to help me take a shower, and put it to use not only during a bath, but while I shaved and brushed my teeth as well.

It really seemed to help keep my anxiety down to a level I could manage.

So the next step is to try and do this consistently, and if I can manage it, even add a little makeup to the routine as well.

Wish me luck ...

Hi Dorothy

I find that music really helps if I'm dealing with personal care, just set aside the time and put the music on. Don't select a station that shouts if you use the radio, an MOR or 24hr music station means you won't interrupt your peaceful thoughts!

Good karma coming your way!

heads up

Just a few words to let you know that I am still here for you if you want Huggles

really worried about you

A lack of self care could be a sign of major depression and can lead to other nasty things that I don't want to see happening to you. I know that many think I am rough on you, but if I didn't care I wouldn't say anything.

I know you are very active on the internet and have a lot of friends here, which is good. But how are you doing socially outside of the internet. Do you have a friend that you spend time with in their physical presence? Do you have a confidant to go to who will show you some tough love when needed, but give you a shoulder to cry on when that is required as well? Physical interaction is important and it helps with those self care issues. I know when I go to church or meet up with friends, I make sure to take care of myself for their benefit.

The other thing I want to recommend is guided meditation. It can really help relax you and teach you how to get to a safe place whenever those demons return. There are a lot of videos on youtube that can help. Also, guided meditation can help you get control over your anxieties when you do mental visualization exercises, but that's a little bit down the road.

Writing is what you do when you put pen to paper, being an author is what you do when you bring words to life

this struggle isnt new, Katie

I've struggled with self care for decades. Some of it may be connected to PTSD, but I'm sure depression has played a part in having these issues

Thank you for caring, though.

TED video

There's a TED video at ted.com entitled "Why we all need to practice emotional first aid" by Guy Winch. I found it really useful. I'd recommend everyone views it (and lots of other TED videos).
