It now appears that skype has BLOCKED any attempts to download and install older versions that will work on my MacBook OS 10.5.8 the new version of skype won't run on my OS. I cannot afford, at this time, an upgrade to my OS, so I guess I'm pretty much screwed. I can't even recover all my contacts and phone number, since I can't sign in to skype. This means my entire phone number list is lost. I've talked with skype support and they say they are working on a solution, but in the meantime, I can not use skype at all, and am, and will be, unavailable to use skype, until they solve (yeah RIGHT) this problem.
I am beyond disgusted.

Mac OS upgrade
I just upgraded my partner's MacBook Pro (a 2010 model running, I think 10.5.x) to the latest OS (10.9.4) for free. Once I did that her Skype would not wok, but I upgraded Skype to the newest version and all is well - and it didn't cost anything! All of her address book settings were intact.

Your contacts should be visible to you when you log in on the skype.com site directly.
There are also some reports that Skype somehow forces windows to check if it is authentic. And this check works not on all of the authentic windows systems... So it seems like a good idea to start considering moving to other messenger/phone app.
Skype - Phoning Home
Since Microsoft bough Skype I have seen a real drop in the quality of the application ironically on the Windows platform. On OSX, I have not noticed this problem.
Sadly I have to use it for business reasons but far too many companies block it on their internal networks (including my own!!!!!!! WTF!!!!)

Business use
Yes. On our corporate network Skype is blocked. The IT people are living in the Stone Age. The standard corporate latop is so locked down that you can't even change the screen background. Suffice to say, I don't use it. My departmental laptop is a top of the range HP, 32Gb Ram, 3TB SSD etc etc. Simulating a complete industrial plant takes a good few Virtual machines.
However, I'm on the road(plane actually) 50-60% of the time and Skype is essential when working with a variety of suppliers all over the world. I had a call today with people in Sao Paulo, Mumbai and Dubai on the line.
For my personal use, I use a MacBook Pro. Everything works OOTB and I don't have to faff around with the crazyness that is modern Windows Operating Systems. (Win 8/Server 2012).
My company's no better.
I drive truck for a rather large 3PL (third party logistics)company. All drivers are required to have a GPS trackable phone with them when driving company rigs. They used to have us using a Motorola Tundra, a real dinosaur in this day and age, but I'd gladly trade it for the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro with "secure launcher" that they replaced it with. "Secure Launcher" dumbs down the Galaxy to the point that it can't do anything beyond make and receive calls/texts, tell me what time it is and display the current month calendar (the app include a countdown timer, a stop watch and alarms), the web access is Airwatch and is limited to one web site. (The one necessary to enter POD (proof of delivery) on our house airway bills. Oh and there's a Google maps and navigation app so I won't get lost on the two and a half mile trip to the manufacturing plant we serve. There's no way to add anymore apps, thanks to "Secure Launcher."
You can't even access the settings in the phone directly or change the default ringer.
In short the thing is just smart enough to show you the phone has great potential, but you don't have access to it.
If I had a choice I wouldn't use it, but that's the phone number the company expects to contact me on while on the road.

Skype Problem Solution!
what follows is a work-around I found on the Apple forums.
be sure to follow the steps exactly as described. Every space, comma etc. counts! To do this, you have to be administrator of your Mac. This is the case if you are the first or only user or your account is configured as an admin account. If not, please show this to the owner/admin so he can do it. It will still work for your account then.
1.) Quit Skype if is still running.
2.) Open the application Terminal. To find it, open Spotlight (right top corner of the screen), type "terminal" without quotes and click on the first result with the small black icon (alternatively, you can navigate in the Finder to /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and start it with a double click).
3.) Copy and paste the following line in to the terminal window exactly as it is here:
sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
then hit Enter/Return and you will be prompted for your password. Type it it (it is not displayed for security reasons, so be sure to type everything correct!) and hit Enter/Return again.
4.) You should see the nano editor screen with several values already typed in. Don't change any of them, instead use your cursor keys to navigate the cursor down to the last line (you cannot use the mouse). In the last (empty) line, add the following line, again by copying and pasting it:
127.0.0.1 ui.skype.com
5.) Hold down the CTRL key and press the O key (o, not zero). In the bottom line, a file path is displayed. Press Enter/Return to accept it and write your changes to disk.
6.) Start Skype to see if everything works again. It should.
7.) Switch back to the terminal, hold CTRL again and press X. This exits the editor. Then you can close the terminal by pressing CMD+Q or using the menu.

Since I am a non-techhie type, I took my laptop to a tech person, who did the work-around and skype is back up running normally *crosses fingers* and NOT the new version! My old dependable 2.8. I dunno how long it'll work, but I hope for the rest of the time until I can afford to upgrade my OS.
