If you are on a Windows 10 machine, follow these instructions.

Go to: https://www.skype.com/en/

Click on Downloads

Click the down arrow to the right of Get Skype from Store

Click Get classic Skype from the drop down menu.

Run the installer after it finishes downloading.

Make sure you UNCHECK optional features such as make BING your default search.

Login using your Skype name or Microsoft Account.

That should be everything to get back to a more classic style of Skype. Please note, this will only work for as long as Microsoft allows it.

If you wish to use the Store version on Windows 10 you will just have to learn the new icons. Contacts on that are stored on an icon that looks like a person icon. The list that comes up initially on the left is just a list of your recent conversations.
